Nooooooooo there's a Mrs Ratch?! Heart..bursting!

This occurs amongst students from time to time. Hope you have a redundant circulatory system.

Resuscitation is problematic when its one of the xeno-exchange students, like human or asari. Krogan don't give mouth-to-mouth very well.

==== ARTISTIC INTEGRITY ====

I have some sad news to report this morning.

As I may have told you, Mrs. Ratch is asari. Don't hold it against her. What you don't know is she's kinda a weird asari. She's into human fashion, she wears crochet head gear, skinny jeans, those retro canvas running shoes, oversized sun glasses and continually addresses her omnitool VI as Siri.

Now you know why I hate hipsters.

The missus works as the Director of Programming for the Tuchanka Arts Council. That was until yesterday when she quit. Seems the audience didn't appreciate her changes to the festival calender. Interpretive dance didn't connect with the krogan as much as the dismemberment of a live turian her predecessor staged. Alien students relax, they've used only death row inmates from certain terminus systems for centuries.

Mrs. Ratch was in a difficult position, Wrex has been trying to stop the snuff shows for years in the interest of better relations with the turians. She had a fiduciary duty through the Krogan Arts Board produce art for krogans, a mandate to push the envelope of krogan taste from Wrex, and also needed to turn a profit on these shows. She thought it would be a good idea to expand our horizons by giving us aliens prancing on stage. Audience hated it, wanted changes. She resigned citing artistic integrity.

In reality, Artistic Integrity should only be claimed if the artists life or livelihood is in danger. Rushdie and Solzhenitsyn fit this paradigm nicely. Standing with your art in the face of a fatwa or the gulag is courageous and worth celebrating.  Claiming artistic integrity for what is a solely commercial product really cheapens the acomplishments of people with quads like that.

In a free society, the artist of a commercial product can only legitimately claim artistic integrity if they are willing to sacrifice commercial success or personal financial gain to keep art as it is.

So in this context the only way Artistic integrity can be invoked by people like video game producers is
  • if they give full refunds to those not satisfied by their art (as per krogan policies) or
  • those responsible sacrifice their jobs (like Mrs. Ratch).

Attempting to use customer dissatisfaction in advertising, by parsing weasel word endorsements with out of context quotes like "Provoked A Bigger Fan Reaction Than Any Other In Video Game History" to sell more copies shows a lack of integrity artistic and general.

Well that's it, hope Mrs. Ratch finds a job soon. Twelve hours and she's already got a list of things to "improve" the house.

Where have we been?

I can't speak for my human alter ego, but I was shopping for decorative cushions, potpourri and incense.

Every year at this time when our cycle is complete, we at the Krogan School look on a graduating class of enthusiastic young whelps butting heads at the walls of this place ready to take their place in the galaxy and are glad:

Glad to have had this chance to highlight all that we strive to be as krogan making our way as in a cruel and dishonorable galaxy; Glad to have had the Humans' arrive on the galactic scene with such a valuable teaching aid in this Bioware fiasco of 2012; Glad to have a chance to learn from their mistakes in the expectation that you will not do the same when the day comes for you to be in the position of leadership.

But it is also a time of sadness, because I've said all there is to say. So all there's left to do is to see what we learned from this mess.

We return to where it began. Early in this thread someone asked about Krogan Economics, to which I said the writings of the human Joseph Schumpeter fit the krogan experience. To Schumpeter, all growth in capitalism is a result of creative entrepreneurs who are constantly innovating new things while destroying things that no longer worked as markets evolved.

However, Schumpeter believed that Capitalism would eventually destroy itself as it became Corporatist. Innovation would slow because these large Corporatist forces would control more and more resources and allocate them to advance their monopolies at the expense of entrepreneurs. Eventually the people,  led by an intellectual elite made wealthy by historical standards would become hostile to capitalism.

On Earth in 2011, anyone that saw a crowd of young people occupying Wall Street while taking pictures with their iPad cameras and scoffed at the absurdity was aware of this phenomenon. Speaking as a krogan, these were the richest impoverished 99% in the history of Earth. Mrs. Ratch is fascinated by this time period, she even staged Occupy the Varren Pits to protest the fights. She gets all excited when there's a movement, even when it makes no sense. Like when she suggested I become a vegan. What can you do? Asari = easily confused.

So can see elements of this in the Hold the Line movements? Neither HTL or Occupy were entitled brats, their outburst is symptomatic of a deep malaise and distrust between a group of well-educated consumers and an increasingly arrogant class in charge. These corporatists believe they can manipulate opinion with a few flashy ads and glossy stories in friendly media sources.

Krogan do not believe as Schumpeter did that these trends will inevitably lead to stagnation of innovation and the end of capitalism. We believe that the new cycle will begin and eventually repeat itself. The hour is late, but not too late for even Morlan to realize he can save his industry by removing corporatists and restoring  the entrepreneurial visionaries. My advice to you is to remember that ultimately the power rests with the consumer acting individually and collectively.

On a personal note, with the war over and Mrs. Ratch looking for a new job, a new opportunity is calling. Wrex is opening a trade office on the salarian homeworld. So it looks like I'll be taking a break from lecturing at the school while we relocate. As much as I love the import/export business and you whelps, the sun, dust and radiation aren't really great for Mrs. Ratch. Not too many asari spouses on Tuchanka either. Think she'll like having some more squishies as neighbours.

So we're done. From this singular point, infinite paths (ie more than three) open in front of all of us. May your competitors be strong enough to keep you sharp.
