asian americans have almost any marker of success you can imagine.  I suppose besides yours, which relies on anecdotes and grievance mongering.  I think it's pretty evident that whatever you're selling, the reality of the world is the exact opposite.  You put down asian americans, an incredibly successful ethnic group, and promote african-americans, a disastrously unsuccessful ethnic group.

I can't imagine a clearer example of why the OP couldn't be more wrong then your series of posts.  supposedly asian-american communities have "social problems" because they don't follow your shallow and degrading version of power, while african-american communities are "empowered" because they do follow it.  I think that's all that needs to be said about the poisonous nature of your worldview.

The one who keeps skewing reality is you because you are blanketing the entire Asian American community as a monolithic entity that is somehow "successful" when I already told you that wasn't the case.  Probably the most well known Asian American activists groups is MANAA which focuses on racism in the media.  "Success" does not protect you collectively from discrimination.  The United States has a black president but that does not change the problems you say blacks have, no?  And yet if Asian Americans were so "successful" why wasn't there an Asian American president first?  In Europe you see a wave of anti-Muslim bigotry despite the fact that countries like Sweden who banned minarets through referendum are pretty much dependent on hard working immigrants to sustain their lifestyle.  Jews in the old Europe were successful.  Too successful apparently according to the whites there.  Did that protect them from pogroms?  No it didn't.  Racism is racism because it's about your RACE not about how much money you have or how educated you are.

@purplesunset:  Like I've already said there are cornrows and dreadlocks in the game.  That alone prevents any claims that Ferelden is "not mixed."

"not a monolith" what an assinine argument.  yes when talking about asian americans or any other group one talks about them AS A GROUP.  Hence why we have discussions about groups.

your priorities are so backwards it's depressing.  maybe this is why blacks are so disastrously unsuccessful though, is destructive people like you have power over their communities.  grievance mongering becomes not only a central theme to their life, but the competition of it.  all I can say is I hope you don't spread your disease of hate and victimhood to the asian-americans.

"According to a new Census Bureau study, more than eight out of 10 Asian-American children in the United States live with both parents, which is significantly higher than any other racial or ethnic group. "

"Asian Americans had the highest graduation rate among all ethnic groups in 1995, the most recent year for which data were available, according to a report released here last week by the American Council on Education. "

yah those asians are barely getting by.  I think its rather hilarious you talk about "lack of role models" considering the vast success of asians.  Do you even know what role models are for?

here's a quick rundown of asian-americans.  They have the second lowest highschool dropout rate, the highest rate of skilled occupation, the highest rate of college degree(by like 15% too), the lowest divorce rate, the second highest homeowner rate, the highest median income, the second lowest in poverty and the second lowest on public assistance.  Compared to blacks who have astronomic incarceration rates, high teen pregnancy rates, high dropout rates, abysmal college graduation rates, high divorce rates, very low median income, nearly a quarter live in poverty....i mean the list just goes on and on.

I don't have a problem with there being a lot of white people in the game. While the setting of DAO is a fantasy universe, Thedas is at least partly inspired by Medieval Europe. If the setting of DAO was inspired by the Three Kingdoms period of Ancient China, I wouldn't be complaining if the majority of the characters appeared to be Asian either.

I wouldn't mind there being a little more diversity in the sequels, so long as it fits in with the lore. Expand the universe a bit and have there be cultures that are loosely based on Africans, Asians, or Middle-Easterners.

It is just a game. But I also see where the original poster is coming from. Some have flamed him pointing out that games like this Jade Empire are recreating a kind of established fantasy/history where a certain race is dominant. For Jade Empire it made more sense given that historically many Asian empires have been isolationist. For midieval rpgs I think this is wrong because there were Africans in the Europe during medieval times though few.

And the games are marketed mostly in the US and Europe where the population is practically a melting pot of race and culture. So it would make sense to give the consumer buying the game the option to customize their characters skin as dark or as light as they would want it. Even if as a developer you don't include any other kind of racial diversity within the story.

I agree with one of the posters that there seems to be a lack of empathy/understanding of a minority in a culture. If you are a little person and you're playing a popular sci-fi rpg and suddenly encounter a character in the story who is also a little person (who isn't the comic relief) then it's a nice thing. You would feel like who you are in real life isn't ignored in that sci fi fictional world.

The same is true for race, especially since it makes up a significant part of the consumer base. It's not a necessity for the game to include a realistic skin customization, but I think it's unfortunate that it would be limited in the character custimization.

I also agree that having a quota for certain types in a game is stupid. But I also think limiting how dark you customize your avatars skin like WoW and a few other rpgs is really pathetic.

I guess this is an old thread, but let me just state the obvious if it hasn't been already. Dragon Age does not take place in Europe. So any arguments about "well Europe is mostly white" is irrelevant. As others have said, it is up to the developers to populate their world however they choose. So they CHOSE not to include a range of skin tones and features. Still, as I wrote about in another thread, I think Bioware has made considerable strides towards a really inclusive gaming environment - if not through physical appearances, then through the kinds of narratives common to people of color.

Still, it would've been nice to have some people like me (<----) walking around.

Oh, and one other thing. It's easy for those of you who are white to "not care" or not understand why this matters, because you have always been well-represented in games. You have always had the opportunity to "identify" with characters that "look like you".

On the other hand, it's completely ridiculous to say something like "Well make a mod!". Why should we have to? You get to identify with the characters in the game world by default, doing no work, and people of color have to learn programming, modeling, and modding just to have the same luxury. Sure, that's fair. I'm not going to follow this thread, so chances are I won't see any responses to my post. I just wanted to weigh in because someone asked me to. I hope you can at least TRY to see things from a different point of view.
