Vindicator. Mattock is decent but a bit
heavier and having to manually fire each shot is mildly annoying.
Revanant is nice, but the accuracy is lacking and it is heavy. Geth
Pulse Rifle does pitiful damage per shot, I used it on the level that I
picked it up and HATED it...I ran out of ammo thanks to the awful damage
and took forever to whittle down Geth Primes with just Liara's Warp +
Tali's drone. Never touched it again.
Vindicator has a nasty
recoil when fired out of cover but otherwise it is perfect. Light, good
damage, good range, decent damage per clip. I've since switched to the
Raptor (not technically an assault rifle) though.

Bu yes the Particle Rifle is utterly nasty with ammo mods and barrel.
Yep the vindicator I think is the best rifle in the game and you get it really soon in the game

The Saber is immensely overpowered, but I didn't want to risk changing my play style in the middle of my Insanity run through, and the Chakram's exploding bullets were immensely helpful with armor.
That said, in my second play through I immensely preferred the Saber due to its extreme accuracy, immense damage, and the fact that with an armor piercing mod it can shoot through Guardian's shields and light cover. Much better than anything else.

using the chakram, i had squad cryo and had kaiden freezing things with it all the time. it seems to have a high proc rate for the freeze effect (or maybe i am just imagining it). in addition, its charged shot penetrates guardian shields and the charged shots have a larger area of effect. its damage was nothing special, but i am really trying to use powers over gunfire where possible. for what it is worth, the chakram launcher is pretty efficient for ammo, especially if you are using the charged shot.
Non-charged shots also shoot through Guardian's shields, even on Insanity.

it fits perfectly with my adepts playstyle. singularity, spam the hell out of throw for a bit, lay another singularity, then pop marskman and tear things apart with the rev. its wight is barely noticable on my cooldown too. i wish marskman drained my barrier or something and didnt run off my cooldown. id love to keep marksman active while using abilties, like ME1.
at first i was convinced the avenger would be best, then i found the phaeston adn leveled it and it was hitting closer to my 200% mark. but then i got the revenant and it rocks. sucks at real long range, but at that intermediate mark im using my biotics at, it works awesome for me.and CQC it cleans health off like windex on a smudgey window.

Soo many choices!
I think the best way to go about this is to start discarding possibles. First off: the Valkyrie, Chakram, Collector Rifle, Particle Rifle and the Argus? They all go sailing out the window. They're all great weapons in their own right, but they're not available to everyone who could possibly read this post, so it's a bit unfair to consider then.
Next up for propmt ejection is the Falcon. "Heresy!" I hear you scream from your fantastically spacious penthouse apartments. Well this rifle is good, its silly good. Its also a grenade launcher. I know it's in the assault rifle slot, but this doesn't really make it even nearly rifle like. Semantics aside, its magazine is less then great and its a great pain to get used to. It can be devastating, but so can other more user friendly rifles.
The Geth Pulse rifle is next up. Here we have a rifle just a shade weaker per shot than the Avenger, with a -huge- magazine and nearly no stability issues. Sadly though its damage per shot turns it into a really big SMG, and while very very nice against shields, it tends to do absolutely nothing to the Banshee jumping at you. Next!
The Revenant is next up. It's the geth pulse rifle, with bigger bullets and more problems. While you can mod away its stability and accuracy issues, you're still left with a rifle that is wanting. This is a rifle best suited to a tanky character, willing to duck out of cover and lay down massive volumes of fire for long periods of time.
Ah the Mattock. There was a time, way back when, when you were the piece of DLC after Shadow Broker that was a must have. Heads popped, and on Insanity mode playthroughs where armor was on every organic in sight, you were a godsend, quickly stipping it away with nearly laser accurate fire. By and large you've kept those nice things, you've just grown fatter and sluggish with age, being held back while newer, sleeker sexier models pass you by. Sorry, its not you, its me. Really.
The Saber. I dumped the Mattock for you. Really. You're the obvious evolution of the Mattock concept. A sniper rifle without the scope, which at the ranges all mass effect games typically deal with, the scope is just in the way. Incredibly powerful, but incredibly slow. So much that I'm forced to ask myself why I'm relying on such a heavy weapon, when there's one only a bit heavier that can pump out even more damage, albeit slower.
The Phaeston makes the short list. It's the Revenant with few if any of the draw backs. Its stable has nearly as much ammo, comparable rate of fire, a little less damage and alot less weight. Because of all of this you actualy get to have fun with modding this rifle, and for an up close and personal play style its much more satisfying than even some of the shotguns.
The Avenger. Ok I know I'm really sounding crazy now, but hear me out. This rifle is the just right out of all the other rifles. Not too heavy, not to innacurate or unstable, full auto when you want it. This rifle now lives up to its iconic image as the rifle of choice in the ME universe. Sure it's not the minMAX "OMG the head just kersploded" rifle that provokes a tingly feeling in the nether regions of most gamers, but when compared to this silly thing called practicality, it's right up there on the list.
Finally, my personal weapon of choice, the Vindicator. The three round burst initialy is uncontrollable but is easily modded to the point the rifle could be a laser gun when fired in cover. Unmodded it still has more than enough punch that when pointed at the head of unfortunate cerberus troops one or two well placed bursts is all that's needed from this gem. Its accuracy is so good a scope is really superfluous and you can save the slot for whatever mod takes your fancy. Its light weight means more power spamming in between bursts.
----
To sum everything up, each rifle really is just an evolution of the stock avenger taken more or less down a certain specialization path. Each rifle's deficiencies can be either rounded out by mods, or they can be maxed out to their logical conclusion.

Very good post, except everyone has the ability to get the Chakram Launcher (it was only a demo, and you only need Silver (free) membership to download demos), and the Saber will always be the weapon I default to when I'm in a bind (with the Chakram Launcher following close behind).

This thread needs more M-37 Falcon. The best, most overpowered gun in the game.
I can get behind this. While I'll admit to not having tried all the guns yet, the Falcon is both damaging and versatile. After picking it up in the Cerberus base, it quickly became my Phantom buster. It's also pretty much my go-to gun for Brutes and Banshees. Even on Insanity, there don't seem to be a lot of combat scenarios that can't be trivialized by simply spamming mini grenades at groups of mooks and advancing sub-bosses. Mod with exploding incendiary ammo for extra lulz.

You just gotta get used to it. It's a guaranteed hit if you actually are targeting your target. You can also take advantage of the bounce in some situations to hit targets that are behind cover that you can't hit conventionallyDixa wrote...
chakram > falcon. falcon rounds have a tendency to bounce off stuff. chakram if you or your companion misses will at least explode near their target. chakram has two chances to apply your ammo power and fully charged does a LOT of initial damage. on insanity it's about 2/3 health bar on assault troopers at rank v
I myself prefer the Vinidcator, Falcon, and Saber depending on the character/situation. On my casters non-soldier combat classes, I use the Vindicator due to it's light weight. I use the Falcon and Saber on my soldier.
I find the Revenant also good for my soldier squad members like Ashley and Garrus.
