I ended up killing everyone and everything that was near a mass relay, and I was floored. I sat through the credits mulling it over and watched the extra bit at the end of the credits. Hmmm. Not a bad way to go out, really. And I say this as someone who wanted the option to kill everything for "uncharitable" reasons before I actually played ME3.
What ended up happening was that ME3 gave me all the essentials I'd been wanting; a return to the aesthetic themes of ME1, presentation of human queer characters(males especially) who were important members of crew and squad, and overall more meaningful chatter with(or just near) the NPCs. The pacing and story did not feel cardboard and by-the-numbers like ME2 did, thus showcasing the benefits of more linear storytelling in a RPG that is intended to be rich. Very nicely done.
I'd heard beforehand some comparisions to the endings for LOST, The Matrix, and BSG. I did not like LOST from early on, so whatever I knew about it were secondhand textual descriptions of how their various dramas ended up. Good riddance, that one. And the less said about Matrix's progression, the better. BSG I did watch from beginning to end, and yes BSG's felt like a lazy cop-out. But all the ways ME3 can go out are all things I can live with. I've read about the other potential endings, so I factored in how I might feel about them once I'm able to play the actual character I've saved since ME1 and ME2, and I still remain optimistic about what's here. I'm hazy about details for controlling the Reapers, but all the other choices I know are outcomes that make sense for Shepard(any Shepard) to embrace. The commander isn't like Revan, for example. Revan gets to be selfish in the extreme, but Shepard is at most a "maverick" while remaining one for the cause. Shepard can be overtly selfish for the things that are petty to begin with like, say, dealing with a former gangmate or handling Jacob's dad, but not so much for the bigger things like this.
I don't perceive any "failed" endings here, not even the worst one which I had. As I saw it life went on afterward, and even the other endings that resemble having a bow placed on them will include a scarred galaxy anyway. Each and every ending can bear a "Mission Accomplished" tag in distinct ways. It was never in the cards for Shepard to become someone like the obvious TIM-mouthpiece. I always saw Shepard as willing to die for whom he or she loved, plus the civilization(s) Shepard believes in protecting. The possibility of Shepard being parted from his/her lover forever if it means ensuring the lover's survival in a galaxy freed from Reapers feels like a fate that any Shepard would not hesitate to fulfill.
