When I play my vanguard, I don't think I'm a liability. I try very hard to help other players as well. Yes, I spam charge because it keeps me alive and lets me do a ton of damage. That's how the class works.
Yet again last night I was in a team with 2 vanguards, and we were the only ones defending objectives. Meanwhile the infiltrators were running around out of range of the objective boosting their score, taking full advantage of the situation.
People hate vanguards. But what about the infiltrators that just hide somewhere and never help with objectives or reviving people? What about the people who shoot the things I'm building combos on when I'm casting? There are so many things to be annoyed about. But it's not the classes, it's the players.

When they are being idiots running around with a Widow and Revenant and thinking they can still rush, they annoy me infinitely.

QUOTED. FOR. TRUTH.
No class can keep 5 baddies busy and live like a Vanguard.
You handle the Pyros, Banshees, and Mechs until your buddies can help.
And he is EXACTLY right. If you have the most kills your team sucks or you suck.

All this vanguard hate is a bit misguided, I think.

Vanguards are OK, but I don't like Nova at all.
The thing I hate the most in multiplayer are the long range people who will not stay and defend the objective and instead let the vanguards handle it.
I don't really fault Vanguards for playing like they do, because it's the class design to do it. The thing is that it's just not a very good team playstyle. You're either on the other side of the map playing bait for the team and if you die you will never get revived, or you stay close and act as a bouncer in which case I would rather have a Krogan because they don't make the whole galaxy shake when they nova.
I strongly dislike that you make my whole screen shake as an Infiltrator. It can make getting headshots considerably harder.

No, but constant repetitions of threads like these do!

The vanguard can solo those... in fact he can cover a flank all by himself, let your infiltrators and adepts blow up stuff safely without worrying about 10 hunters jumping on them out of nowhere.Count Dante wrote...

I don't know what the developers did to mess things up between the Demo and the full release, but during the demo it was fine. Most of the time I'll die while I'm in the middle of charging, or while I'm trying to mash Charge but nothing happens even though there is clearly a target in front of me and nothing in the way (I'm sure all Vanguards have experienced this in the full release), or that Nova does not come out directly after a charge as it should normally, resulting in your shields being drained before the Nova comes out and death. Not to mention the significant delays between half Novas which I thought were an intentional fix for the full release but turns out its lag again because in a few rare games it has actually worked fine for me in terms of cooldowns. And last but not least I'm sure all Vanguards are aware that we glitch almost every damn game.
Yes there are terrible Vanguard players who think they're the "****" and charge off on their own and die, then complain and leave or wait till they die and leave. But there are other smarter Vanguard players who always think team-first, but still suffer because of balancing and glitching issues.
For those who are really angry about Vanguards, I suggest you try using one on Gold. No matter how confident you are in your skills, you'll find yourself dying due to circumstances beyond your control and it is very very frustrating.

And that isa where you seperate the Boy Guards and the Man guards. Man guards on gold gotta plan and flank and help their team. On Bronze? At level 16, I have solo'd all but the last wave and I believe it was because I screwed up. It aint like that in gold!

I get that. They might want to remove the screen shake for other players.
Blame the game for this for now, but don't exclude vanguards because of it.

Focus your level ups on Charge and Fitness at first. Shockwave is
semi-helpful and I personally only used it against Guardians, since it
pushes their shield away for a moment, or if i am in a tight spot and
need to distract some enemies in front of me (though then the question
arises why you don't Charge instead). You definatly want the last
upgrade where it recharges 100% shield instead of 50% after a
successful Charge.
Nova is great for dealing damage to more than 1
enemy and it doesn't affect your Power Recharge, since it feeds off of
your Shield.
Thus said: Be aware that it may leave you vulnerable, so
either use it when you know that you won't leave anyone near you
standing, or get the upgrade that only uses up 50% of your shield
(though deals less damage, so this is something you have to decide)
The
Weapons that work for me are Shotgun and MPs, just make sure your
weight isn't affected too much, so you get a good Power recharge rate.
Shotguns
are perfect, cause they need less aim and deal good damage if you
Charge into a big group or enemies that survive the charge itself.
MPs are just for tearing down barriers/shields and are generally faster.
Usage and your job:
Aside from Grenade tossing classes, the Vanguard is great for bigger crowds or enemies that dodge weapons easily.
Kill
those Nemesis' that bug your team, Charge in, Nova, do the rest with
the shotgun, since those Nemesis don't tend to stay and fight, but
rather run away if you are too close, you are the best class to tear
them apart.
If you Charge into something that makes it out alive and
has a strong melee attack (Phantom, Atlas, Banshee), ROLL BACK, use your
shotgun, move away or charge in as soon as it works again.
Vanguards
are great for covering a large area, since the Charge works very far,
so use that to flank enemies, kill the ones that stay further away from
the main force or even get into their back.
A nice sideeffect is, that others won't start crying because of kill steals and if you disrupt their fancy power combos.
If
you figured out how much it needs to charge and Nova, without getting
yourself killed, you are also a good class to help up teammates
surrounded by enemies.
Remember: They died because of a reason, so
that reason may be that the area they are lying in is still swarming.
Charge in, if survivable Nova, if your shields get too low Charge again
and when it is safe enough, revive your teammate.
I often work as a
kind of Combat Medic and if you know your limits and use your powers
right, you might save someone who later whines on the forum that
vanguards are overpowered
Note: Those tactics and usage is
only based on my opinion. In no way am I a professional 1337 haxxorpro
and i never touched silver or gold before, so experiment yourself, see
what the vanguard can do and have fun, something most people forget
'round these parts.
If you unlock the other races, check them out
too. Can't help you much with the Asari, cause i don't have her yet,
but the Drell was one of my favorites, since he has nice grenades to
deal with shields and armors, something the Vanguard is not that good
with and the pull is good for normal troops or yanking shields away from
the guardians.

I wanna try and make a defensive vanguard build now. Will be fun to not get buttraped by hunters and pyros for once.
Any suggestions?
Honestly? No such thing really, but again, I do nothing but charge, melee, and the occassional shot. BUT! Hunters and Pyros? You can solo them. Then watch all the lil snipers cringe because they have to run away.
My best solo of that caliber I can recall was 2 pyros, a scrub, and a banshee. Bronze I think, might have been silver but I doubt it.

not really a fan of nova guards, there all right for farming bronze but on silver/gold there a bit weak, with the AOE charge on an arari you can charge in stun the group headshot one double tap back twice charge strait in just as they recover restun and repeat, if theres a big group at range and you have time you stais bubble and charge, problem with most vanguards is they charge at the wrong units, your there to take care of the trash, brutes, banshees, atlas, primes's you need to sit back and shoot unless there back is facing you then get there attention and get in cover, not phantoms since your charge if you boosted force seems to knock them off balance all the time, and when they cloak your next one will insta kill them.... infact id say vanguards do very very well against cerbs, on gold geth missile spam and flamers tend to down you quick unless your so stuck to cover that your useless, reapers are well repaers, full of wonderfull insta kill across the map barrages and banshees that insta gib you are your trying to get back on your feet YAY
sentinal is my main play but recently been trying out the arasri definatly prefere it over human nova spam

Vanguard is the team body guard. If you have the highest score on your team as a Vanguard you are on a ****ty team (or playing silver/bronze). The problem is most don't play this way.
The lag issue and charge bugs are a real problem though.
This is the way I play on Silver and Gold. I stay back, lay down weapon fire, and cover my squad with Charge/Nova. I will head out every now and then to drop certain enemies, like a rocket trooper that has broken away from the group, but I am never on the opposite side of the map.
I'm typically in the middle of scoring. If it is a close quarters map I tend to score higher. If it is wide open and I'm with a sniper group, I score at the bottom sometimes unless I start playing selfish.

They'll sit back as I pound away at a target and just as I'm about to kill him, in charges the Jerk of a team mate and swipes my kill away with his Biotic Charge. Hopefully I can find a way or they'll put filters in so I can cut this player out of further games. That or i'll just play private games with friends.
I just hate wasting ammo so Bio boy there can just sweep in without breaking a sweat.

I know when to back down and stick with my teammates though.
The biggest mistake random Vanguards make is running off where the team can't help them in any way. All you really need to do is stick in line of sigh of your teammates and you'll be fine.
This.
