In terms of gameplay, as well as presentation and characters, ME3 is best.
ME2 was the middle point in every way.

'Sub'-stories : Mass Effect 2
Characters : Mass Effect 2
Romances : Mass Effect 2
Nostalgia : Mass Effect 1
Battle : Mass Effect 3
'Direness' : Mass Effect 3
Graphics : Mass Effect 3
Female Salarians and otherwise more Salarian-goodness : Mass Effect 3
Salarians : Mass Effect 3
Meeting Salarians : Mass Effect 1
Mordin... The Salarian : Mass Effect 2
(Did I mention moar salarians?)
Dialogue : The dialogue feels more custom in 1, but more smooth in 3. And you can actually move and talk! So... I'm split. 2 wasn't bad, either.
'Weapon method' : Probably ME3, which has improved mods soo immensely. I did, and still, prefer the overheat method. But I'm not too sore on it. Plus... always the Prothean rifle!
classes : I preferred Infil in ME1, but they killed it in 2 (not enough sniper ammo!). So I loved Eng. I love them both equally in 3, with the addition of Adept.
So ultimately, they all have their strong points, in very different ways.
Now we just need to combine them and create mass effect 1.23

I love RPG elements
2. ME3/ME2
These games are not Mass Effect as I remember it. Mass Effect is a sci-fi RPG, not an interactive movie. Still, not bad games, just very disappointing.

For me it is close between 2 and 3, but characters and places of ME2 took over.
ME1>ME3>ME2
ME2 was complete and utter trash. The ending of ME3 was better than that horrible trash storyline that was completely irrelevant to everything. And don't even bother arguing against it, besides the Collectors being mentioned about 5 times in the game, and the useless characters being added (even TIM barely had any impact at all on ANYTHING besides makiing the game length longer) what ACTUAL impact did ME2 have on the storyline of the Reapers? None. At all. Zilch. Not includng the Arrival DLC. (LOTSB and Arrival were the only reasons to ever play ME2, and Arrival was a ridiculously stupid storyline that felt like a smack in the face, but at least it was directly relevant to the problem, and LOTSB was just awesome.)

I do have to say I disagree a bit, I love the interactive movieness, but I also gained that same vibe while playing the big plot elements of ME1. (The sidequests were generally bland fluff anyway).

The writing of Shepard's dialogue options in the first one was superb. You were simultaneously creating and discovering a really great character. An extraordinary feat.

But.. Mordin??
I was going to say ME2 was the worst but then I remembered Mordin. He basically redeemed the entire game.. and if it didn't need redeeming then he made it awesome

Original is where it began, so that means it's the best by default.

I still think that many parts in the first game were cringeworthy. It was good but the game was such a hodge-podge of different ideas (It wanted to be a classic RPG with inventory and stuff, then it wanted to be a modern Third Person Shooter, then it wanted to take steps into the unknown regarding storyelling and dialogue choices). 2 was the best as I think it recieved alot of polish, the combat was fun (but even better in 3) which I can't really say for 1 and the storytelling was great even if I have read more engaging plots.
3 is an epic game but even without finishing it yet I feel that there are some things that didn't achieve "perfection" (nothing is ever perfect) as it did in ME2.
All 3 very good games though.

Truth be told i am spoiled by the gameplay in ME2 and 3...so playing ME1 once again would be a colossal effort on my part...i`d play it for the story mostly but not cause the gameplay...
And ME3 is the best of the series up until the end...like many people said the things you had to do in ME3 were absolutely heart numbing...you got to see all your choices in ME1 and 2 put to good use..then comes the end...but again i won't hate the game because of its ending...but i wouldn't mind getting a new ending also..

It also has Kelly. It also had more than two enemy sets. And Miranda's catsuit.
But ME1 has Virmire, which is my favorite ME mission of the main storyline.
ME3 has............ ................ Tuchanka. Which is good. Except that's all it has.
ME2 > ME1 > ME3
But they all have their charms, even this one. I like the combat in 3 a lot, although fighting the same enemy repeatedly--and yes, I know that's the point--does get tiring.

Gameplay: ME1 & ME2 - these games have certain balance of RPG and Action, nice features and AWESOME re-playability.
Script: ME1 - perfect idea with Reapers, highly-detailed universe and lore.
Music: all three games have no problems here.
**ME3 fails for me both graphically and story-wise, I want the game to look and feel as a beautiful story which it once was, not some action-packed and poorely decorated "product", which is partially saved by good voice-acting.

This for me aswel. I found ME2 was mainly built up of dealing with your squad members personal problems, there were very few moments where you were actually taking the fight to the Collector's/Reapers. This dampened the experience a lot for me, still a fantastic game, but the weakest of the series in my opinion.

1.) ME1
2.) ME2
3.) ME3 (Dependant on any subsequent changes)
ME1's inventory system still sucks though. One of the weakest parts of the game. If they had just had a better catorigization(is that a word?) system. I also must admit I'm an 'old school' roleplayer, so ancient titles like Baldur's Gate are still where I'd prefer to be.
