That's just it.

Now with ME3 out and offering substantial gameplay improvements and much more smoothly woven together experience than ME2 (too modular and not a well joined together experience), and ME1 having a far better atmosphere/vibe/story than ME2...

Apart from introducing some great characters (Mordin, Legion...), it's kind of bleh in retrospect. Not saying it isn't a good game - it is a very good game. But compared to ME1 and ME3 it loses in all departments.

ME1-ME2-ME3.

ME1 has now ancient graphics, the control scheme is horrible and the inventory is a nightmare to maintain, but its story is still amazing, perhaps tighter than ME2 in my view.

ME2 has better graphics and a much better control scheme, but the story is a little less thrilling than ME1. Some really great characters though. Also some really good DLC.

ME3 has multiplayer, which is actually quite fun. Unfortunately, it also has the face import bug, which has prevented me from actually playing the single player portion of the game.

Favorite: Mass Effect 2.
Good- Intensely personal, great narrative development and uncompromisingly ambiguous, Specifically in character motivations. Aria T'loak
Bad- RPG and true Space Exploration amputated. Thermal Clips violate all known physics.

Middle Child: Mass Effect 1.
Good- Atmosphere of discovery. Integrity of the writing. Galactic Exploration. Actual class differentiation, and squad composition impact outside combat.
Bad- Substandard combat, Inventory mess (Though I did like loot from battles, this returns to a certain extent in Mass3's Reinforcement packs), Few unique set pieces in the story.

Least Favorite: Mass Effect 3.
Good- Threads wrapping up in emotionally gripping ways(Manly tears @ Mordin+Legion). Several core RPG mechanics reinstalled. Much to my surprise, the Multiplayer.
Bad- The ending that makes no sense in any context of the Mass Effect universe. Combat difficulty is far too easy. Level design that didn't evolve since Mass Effect 2. Side content too "Railed".

At this very moment I have just completed Horizon: Sanctuary and I would currently rate the ME games as ME3=ME2 > ME1.

In many ways ME3 is the best game in the trilogy but there are are certain areas where I feel that for every step forward Bioware made from ME2 they also made a step backward.

Autodialogue and a terrible ending create a huge distance between ME1 and ME3. Of course, if they fix the latter, it will be on par with ME1 (imo).

ME1, Best story, Favorite mission in all the games was Virmire, I liked the squadmates the best in ME1, and Saren was the best written character and best antagonist in all the games.

ME2 is last because the story was bad, and poorly paced. Harbinger and the collectors seemed like an afterthought. Spent too much time doing random missions and fighting the same Mercs over and over.

ME3 is in the middle because it's not as good as the first and not as bad as the second. Not that any of the games are bad.

Considering that the Collectors are nothing more than Husks, what kind of deep development did you expect? The true antagonist of Mass Effect 2 is The Illusive Man.

ME3 would have had a 10 if the ending was better implemented. The whole game isn't made up entirely by the ending.
