People are now just jerking everyone's chain.  Bottom line, there is no excuse for the ending, especially if they planned a later release.  The only thing that would work now is a mea culpa, followed by a "We'll redo this...".  I doubt that occurs, but I won't be pleased if the plan all along was to jerk us around and screw with our emotions and loyalty. That really would be a shabby approach to customer loyalty.
