Mordin's death was meaningful, it wasn't just sad, he actually did something great with his life when he sacrificed it.
Legion gave the Geth intelligence.
Thane finally redeemed his past by saving somebody from another Assassin.
Of course, there are some instances where you can totally **** these things up and their deaths will be trivial, but that's fine. At least it still gives the illusion of real choice.
But yeah, most of those kinds of deaths were well done and genuinely emotional in a good way.

Kinda annoyed me as well, it was like the ME 2 guys were introduced just so they could die in ME 3. Zaeed didn't even get a mention on the wall. I mean he was a bastard and all that, but he went on the suicide mission, same as everyone else, surely he deserves his name on the roll of honour?
Zaeed is really a decent guy... his just kinda short sighted when his emotions blind him XD

Legion and Thane are the only unavoidable ones
Mordin, Grunt, Samara, Jack, Zaeed and Miranda can be avoided
Kasumi and Jacob are in no danger of dying
Now if your complaining that most got bit parts while guys like Mordin, Legion, Miranda and Thane got bigger roles... I can see what your saying
Actually if you don't do Kasumis loyalty mission then she never recloaks after the blast, does it mean she's dead, I'm not sure. I never actually checked the wall to see if they marked her as dead or not.

What? Zaeed has a small side quest dedicated to him. Besides, he was a DLC character. It makes sense he wasn't given as big a role as say, Mordin or Legion.
I also am not sure where Jack dies.
Assuming you let Mordin die for the genophage cure, the only other neccesary deaths are Legion and Thane. The rest can all live within the same save.

Jack never died in any of my play throughs. She only dies if you let the Grissom academy quest go for too long. After sometime you get a message that the place was overrun and no one survived.GBGriffin wrote...
Some of the deaths make sense for me: Legion, Thane, and Mordin, while emotional, actually worked for me and the story at the time.
I can't say that much about Morinth or Jack. That really is just a cheap way to get rid of them.
Also, wtf Kal'Reegar!?

How does that make him any different from the rest of the squad? If he served, he deserves.
I read Jack can be found Phantomised at the Cerberus base if you don't save Grissom Academy.
How can you not let Mordin die for the genophage cure? I didn't think that was possible.

There is a phantom called Jack in cerberus base and you hear audio of a scientist killing her
Proof? Aparently the wiki on Jack says this:
"If Shepard does not help Grissom Academy in time, she will appear as a special enemy Phantom when Shepard raids Cerberus Headquarters."
Only Mordin, Thane, and Legion died in mine .. From what I've heard you can't have both Wrex and Mordin alive, so I choosed to have Mordin make the sacrifice ..

If Wrex and Eve are dead, and you destroyed the cure, you can convince him that it would just lead to another Rebellion, and the the best thing for the krogan would be to fake the cure. He'll reluctantly agree, and go to join the Crucible project.

I don't feel that their deaths detracted from the quality of the game that much, they all died for what could be argued to be the greater good, and they were well written out.
To do something that big and not have casualties was inconceivable. I expected a couple of characters to die.
I can see that it was done as a way of demonstratiing that in war some things are just outside of your control and losses are inevitable. None of their losses felt meaningless to me though. Tragic yes, but all were in the effort to accomplish something that couldn't have been done if they had died in ME 2, with the exception of Morinth and Kelly who always was an airhead.
Legion's sacrafice was the most beutiful by far and Thane's was the most heroic. Miranda's was out of pure love and Mordin's was the ultimate act of redemption. All were well written and served a higher purpose that contributed and added weight to the narrative. Beautifull storytelling on Biowares part. Hey credit is due where credit is due.

My point was that Zaeed does get a side mission where he doesn't die, and can genuinely contribute. But yeah, he's a DLC character. Say what you will, but that's fine with me. Makes it feel more optional at least. I know a lot of people hated Zaeed anyways.
My second point was pretty much all deaths of squad members can be easily avoided.
I don't know, I've never done a playthrough where I didn't let him go. I'm guessing if you sabotage the cure he lives. That's what I've heard.

Mordin died curing the Genophage which he helped create, he was getting old and short on life as he stated and this he wanted to do himself. Most likely to make sure it was done right and to clear his guilt.
Those are some of the main ones I remember dying, and to me it made sense and added real emotion to the story.

Apparently you can save Kelly by telling her to change her name, Kal'reegar's a really minor character anyway. Dunno about Morinth, never picked her. You will ALWAYS lose Thane and Legion, regardless of your choices, but you can theoretically save everyone else. As to their deaths overall, this was going to be a hard fight, and I wasn't expecting everyone to survive.
Morith gets offed in the most ugly way possible.
You find an email from her on the Monastery. She sends you another email. And then you meet her on Earth. The banshee you fight after the reaper? Has her name.
But no one even says a word, is amazed, or angry about a former squadmate beign huskified. Basically they all ignore the fact.
That was the part of the game that pissed me off by far the most.
