I've got a lot of love for this series - how ME3 ended, while important at the moment, is about as significant as William Shatner is to the recent Star Trek movies. A movie is essentially more of the universe, based in a parallel reality where there are Elcor, Volus, Salarians, Turians, Hanar... but this one's more than likely got a happier destiny.
The Mass Effect story isn't really all that complicated really - it's just the intricate dialogue and codex entries that make things as complex and fleshed out as they appeared. In fact, Bioware did a great job at condensing the entire plot of Mass Effect 1 into a motion comic for PS3 players - the story could still be told within a 120 minute timeslot.
Whether it's good or not depends on who's going to be starring in it, who gets to write the screenplay, and who the directors and producers are. There's no reason this can't be absolutely fantastic

as long as they dont involve shepard in the mass effect movie i'm game.
I'm of the opposite opinion - I can't see how you could have a Mass Effect movie at this point in time (when everyone 'knows' Mass Effect as Shepard's series right now) without Shepard. In truth they're likely to go with as close as possible best approximation of Mark Vanderloo Shepard, since that's the one everyone recognises even if folks normally choose to play as FemShep or a custom character.
But more importantly, Seth Green as Joker is an absolute must

Totally, just too see how much of the rest of the story they'll screw up.
I better keep a vomit bag ready, though.

For me, I know, I have two Sheps, and I'd personally like to see both portrayed in a film. Wouldn't feel right seeing poster-boy Shep in the lead role. And if they did get one of my Sheps spot on, I'd feel annoyed that the other wasn't portrayed.
It's just what happens when you RP a character. You don't want someone else telling you what that character's like. That's what you're supposed to decide and come up with yourself.

The problem I always saw the movie is that it messes with the players' canon. No movie could ever incorporate everyone's view of Shepard, and thus anyone who plays Shep differently than they're portrayed in the film will come out thinking "that wasn't MY Shepard" and will either resent the film because of it, or feel that their Shep canon is meaningless.

I can't really see what point you're trying to make here, since you've already established two concurrent parallel Shepards that are different from each other. If you can do that, then a third 'movie' Shepard should be quite easy to accept as well.
To put things into perspective, I'm a lifelong Doctor Who fan, and I also love the Peter Cushing movies. Yes, this is not the same 'reality' that the television series portrays, but the important elements are all present and correct. And they're both a whole lot of fun to watch. I could theoretically get hung up on details such as Cushing not actually being a Time Lord - but I don't because it's not the exact same 'universe'.
The same thing is true with a Mass Effect movie situation. It could be it's own thing and do really well (obviously you'd need some key things like the Citadel and Shepard otherwise people would say it was just any old space movie with the name tacked on), or it could try to be far closer to the game than it really needs to be - resulting in a jumbled mess that is basically a tribute at best and a confusing mess at worst for non-fans.
The thing is, movies are a whole lot lighter form of entertainment than games. They keep you happy for the 2 hours or so you're sitting watching them. That's all they're intended to do. Theoretically, there's no real reason why a movie can't be at least as good and accepted by the fanbase as the novels - especially if Drew Karpyshyn is chosen to write the screenplay.
