While searching through this forum I have found that most of technical problems are slowdowns, choppy gameplay, crashes and freezes. So my question is: do you really think that Bioware would release such a faulty game? Do you
think that while they were developing this game for 5 years they were suffering those issues? When I first launched
this game I was amazed of how smooth the framerate is! After playing it for more than 150 hours on max details and with HD textures mod I had no crashes or slowdowns and my PC is not high-end (radeon 4850, 2gb ram, core 2 duo 2.2ghz overclocked to 2.9ghz and windows xp sp3). So why can I enjoy a smooth, troublefree gameplay and you are suffering desktop crashes if we play the same game? Well, the answer is easy, I meet those requirements and you obviously not:

1. Play the original game. No, really, buy the original copy and play it. You'll never know if the bug you're experiencing is a problem of original copy or a bad crack. Not to mention that illegal copies are...well...illegal.
2. Update your motherboard drivers. Most people doesn't even know that motherboard drivers need to be updated! Come on, it's like a computer's brain. Everything is connected to it: your cpu, gpu, ram, and those little dwarves who make all this magically working...and steal your socks while your sleeping.
3. Update your DirectX. It's like a... just update it.
4. Update your graphic drivers. If you're experiencing graphic bugs, slowdowns or crashes there is a big chance you're using outdated drivers. If you're not playing games from stone age there is really no excuse for having old drivers.
5. Update your audio drivers. Yup, old audio drivers CAN cause performance slowdowns. Don't ask me how, it's just one of those cosmic mysteries.
6. Defragment your hard drive. Imagine you're doing 10.000 pieces puzzles and most of the pieces are lying under your bed, behind the desk, on the carpet and with the other puzzle pieces. Thats what your hard drive is doing when you play DA without defragmenting it first.
7. Close other unimportant applications. Close X-Fire, close your browser, turn off antivirus software (thats important) and stop downloading porn...

I assure you, if you meet all those lucky 7 points, all or most of your technical issues will be magically gone.

PS: sorry if I made any grammar mistakes. English is not my native language.

Most technical issues people are experiencing are caused by the game, unfortunately, and not the underlying system.

Thanks for the Advice but, just because your Rig it works on doesn't mean it works for all. The Problem has a lot to do with the way the game was programed. Lots of Memory issues and problems with certain configurations. Trust me a lot of us have already done what you have posted.

It may not work for all rigs, but it will indeed lessen some strain on your computer (even if it's only very, very slight for some). You can also kill explorer.exe and then open up Task Manager, and go 'File -> New Task (Run...) and navigate to C:\\Program Files\\Bioware\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\daorigins.exe (for XP, otherwise whatever the Vista default game directory is for DA:O). Explorer uses more memory than my anti-virus, so it's worth killing sometimes.

In addition to the Defrag of the hard drive, you can also run Disk Cleanup to help remove old, badly indexed files and such. I don't know how beneficial this is performance-wise, but it'll make the PC less cluttered within its depths.

Thanks for the advice but most people actually do that, as if my case, it still doesn't work. Just because it was in development for 5 years doesn't mean they play tested it in any kind of recommend configuration, with as many variables, afterall i think everyone knows the day a PC game comes out bug free is the day hell freezes over.

The only thing i havn't done is updating the motherboard drivers. Mostly because i'm not PC savvy and everytime i search for it i encounter unclear guides on how to do it, or simply warning statements on how the procedure, when gone rwong, can induce severe anal bleeding on my pc.

Well, I can't argue with you guys because like I said, I'm not experiencing any issues. I know what works on my rig doesn't have to work on other machines but it's also hard to believe that after meeting those 7 points people are still encountering slowdowns/crashes.

I love these guys who come in here drop a few pointers that are already common knowledge/practice for most gamers and assume the problems just magicaly go away. The problem is in fact caused by the game itself not agreeing with the millions upon millions of possible PC configurations that are possible. Bioware cannot possibly code for all that randomness untill its brought to there attention that its causing said problems. Then they do what they can to fix it.

To the OP, your smug attatude does nothing but make guys like me angry.....which by definition would be trolling....so have fun with that.

You are kidding right? you should NEVER turn off your anitvirus or firewall while connected to the net. Since DA needs the net for the authentication and DLC and such don’t ever turn these things off until you pull the cable out the wall. Another thread had suggestions on tweaking the settings. but never turn them off.
You will probably find that most people that post on forums like this are kinda geeky, they will already know about drivers and updates and many could even quote you sections of coding from the next directX update with hilarious anecdotes. As for the porn thing HA don’t be silly ;p
