I really hated the NWN2 camera, actually. Especially up close, when you had to WASD your character around. Really uncomfortable.

I don't reckon you're trolling, but you are definitely blowing this way out of proportion. I understand the whole immersion thing, and i know a bad camera can quickly make a game frustrating, but you're saying that it's a total disaster and that the game is completely ruined because you can't click to walk or zoom right in on your characters face. It does seem a little over the top, but i'm not going to start flaming you for it, it's your opinion and that's fine, it just seems a little odd.

Oddly enough, one of the OP's complaints appears to be that he has to WASD his character around up close. Just like NWN2. I don't know how he would expect to click to move if his character is in the way, but whatever.

It's a constant struggle just to keep the camera facing in the right direction.

You click on the ground ahead of you and the camera takes control and swivels around so that it's facing directly behind your character. Okay, but now the camera has been screwed up, so you have to readjust it so that it's facing in the direction in which you want it to face. If you want to click on an area directly in front of you it's difficult to do because your character is kind of blocking the way.

So you end up turning the camera, and clicking, and then turning, and clicking... talk about fiddly! The only way to avoid this is by taking control of your character and steering - this means having your left hand on the WASD keys. Huh? No, seriously, that's EXACTLY how this game is setup. The game really wants you to be steering your character with the keyboard. It almost demands this.

Seriously, all of this feels EXACTLY like Age Of Conan. I feel like I'm playing some kind of action RPG almost? I mean, WTF?

This post is on the front page along side this one. It has the link to the PDF manual for the PC version of DA: O. On page 7 it clearly states that zooming in and out is down (with default controls) via the pg up and down buttons.

In the interest of stopping the abuse that the OP is getting (and giving out...), is there anybody else out there who got the game early and can tell us what the camera is like? The OP's game might be broken for some reason.

From the second page:

Umm, you right click on the spot on the ground you want to go, and the party will move there.

Everything you said you have a problem with, I have no problems at all, everything works fine. It is easy to zoom in and out, turning the camera, everything. I find it far superior to NWN2 in that regard.

On the subject of movement, clicking and camera control, I must admit that I was not entirely happy with the PC controls - you see, I would prefer tohave the mouse buttons swapped - use left-clicking for movement and so on. Now, there is an option to swap the buttons, but it swaps them everywhere - also in menus and such. So, I had to get used to the button functionality - and while it felt weird for the first few days, I got used to it.

The same applies to camera control and such ... it may not be exactly like what you are used to, but you will adjust quickly.  (But yes, I kind--of agree with the OP that it would have been nice to be able to get a bit closer to the PC on occasion).

I'll get my copy of the game around mid-day tomorrow, so I can't comment on the camera angle in the game.. But I too like the click an pan features.. Not because it's a RPG though, just because I like to look at my nifty new pixels. In fact as for immersion, clicking an panning is probably the least immersive, most being inside the character.. Still though I like you enjoy watching the pixels on occasion.

On a secondary note.. You meantioned that's why you gave up on witcher? However Witcher does have click and pan.. I use it all the time, mostly if I feel like sitting back and playing a more relaxed game then being hunched over my pc provides. Hope that's not the only reason you gave up on the witcher, because it was a good game, and they even make a pretty big deal of their 3 alternate camera modes.. I think they even mention it on the back of the box.

So does the OP mean, if you point click somewhere on the ground and the camera rotate itself??

The camera is always in the back of the character, unless you manually changed it? (Like in Oblivion??)

It seems that the OP was saying, the camera in DAO constantly let the player facing the back of their characters. To be honest I don't like this feature hopefully I can change it in the settings.

I hated the NWN2 camera bad enough to put me off on playing it too, but I got used to it. Eventually they added in the better strategy mode cam and I was happy, heh.

stop complaining and learn how to use Console options. Seriously. If you want the camera to zoom in closer or further away set the camera distances differently. Either in the Ini file or using the console.

Every standard pc users, should know these commands.

From what it sounds like, it handles similarly to an mmo. Could you right-click to move, then hold down the left mouse button to prevent the camera turning?

Yeah, the camera's kind of like it is in Jade Empire.

But seriously, we need to be able to right click, and walk. Just give us a ****ed walk toggle button what will allow for this.

Not steering and walking, mind you - because indeed you can steer your character and walk.

I'm talking about a simple right click on the ground so that our character will walk there instead of running. Do that and I'll be a little happier. I'd really like to be able to zoom in a bit more as well. The camera just prevents you from zooming in close - it's extremely, extremely annoying. But oh well, I guess I'm just going to have to live with it.

Okay, thanks.

(By the way, most of you are going to find out all about this tomorrow anyhow. But get ready for a sea of posts on this subject - and don't say I didn't warn you.)

Or better yet, change something in the options. What you're talking about is commonly referred to as "smart-camera"

Yes, that works.

But your character still runs.

you can toggle character running or walking.. default is numpad/

you can hold both mouse buttons to move forward like "w" also right click to move like most MMO's but instead of left click to pan camera (none available, just selection box like RTS) you have right click (hold) to pan camera
I more often than using "w" to walk is to press and hold both mouse buttons.. it's easier, more effecient for me since I like to pvp so this keeps my left hand a little more free to cast spells and actions and what not.. try using that OP rather than being tied down to WASD too much.  Mouse turning ftw!

Well, I'm a bit worried about this as well, because the only reason I am no longer playing NWN2 is because of the crappy camera.

I'm an MMO player, and I can't use WASD. Can someone who has the game tell me if it's possible to use a mouselook movement control similar to WoW (and others, but WoW is the most popular)?

EDIT:   Thanks to the above poster who clarified while my post was chugging away.  :)
