Wow, the camera just sucks!

I was pleasantly surprised how the game handled since I'm a big WoW player and it was nearly exact transition.

It's a constant struggle just to keep the camera facing in the right direction.
You click on the ground ahead of you and the camera takes control and swivels around so that it's facing directly behind your character. Okay, but now the camera has been screwed up, so you have to readjust it so that it's facing in the direction in which you want it to face. If you want to click on an area directly in front of you it's difficult to do because your character is kind of blocking the way.
Only does that if you don't zoom out, genius

Thank you! No autorun? I'll prepare some ice for my wrist, then.
yeah I really feel like auto-run could have been implemented rather easily and would not have taken away from anything... oh well, that's what mods are for I guess

If I remember correctly, KOTOR used the same type of camera setting and you couldnt click on the ground to make you character move to that position. So i would say its a standard BioWare thing. Also, neverwinter nights 2 wasn't made by BioWare it was Obsidian
You've got a pretty hot female avatar.

Okay, for the 50'th time now - that doesn't work.
Yes, that works for those people who want to steer their character around (as though they're playing some kind of first person shooter or something). But I don't want to do that. I want to move my character by right clicking on the ground. That's all I want to do. Just right click on the ground.
The way it's setup the character will always run. There's no toggle for this.
And for those of you telling me to start messing around with .ini files in order to get the camera to zoom in closer... uh yeah, right. I didn't realize that I was going to have to be a low-level programmer in order for basic camera functions to work properly in this game.
Seriously, it's my job to be tinkering about with .ini files.

If you pull the camera all the way back (so it assumes a quasi-isometric view), is it still tethered to your selected character (like NWN) or is it free-panning (like BG)?
It sounds like there are some frustrating limitations to the camera controls for players who are very particular about the feel of the game, which I think is a legitimate complaint. Unfortunately, the OP also hasn't done the greatest job expressing these concerns; many of the posts were confusingly worded and I got a feeling of great impatience, which is never helpful.

And guess what - you can't zoom the camera right in on your character. The camera stops way before you get a close up of your character's face.
This is SO disappointing. Why bother having such an elaborate character creation utility when you can't even zoom in on your character! It's even worse than Mass Effect. You feel like you're about ten miles away from your character?
And seriously, you guys actually prefer this? Wow. I sure don't. All the charm of being able to zoom right in and swivel the camera around on my character as my character walks up the street is gone. This feels EXACTLY like Jade Empire. I feel like I'm playing an action game here?
And yes is the PC.
Huge, huge, disappointment.
What are you talking about? I've played Mass Effect for the PC, you can get right up on the PC's face, infact I did it after making my first character because I wanted to check out his scar and everything. Also, if you are playing the PC version of DA:O I highly doubt that they have 0 camera control, no zoom, etc. But whatever, I'm not here to argue, just my two cents while I wait for the game in the mail

I don't have it yet, but it detaches from the character at the highest zoom level. Quote from the manual:
To zoom the camera, scroll with your mouse-wheel. When the camera is fully zoomed out, you can pan across the battlefield using the arrow keys, by clicking the mouse wheel and dragging, or simply by nudging the edge of the screen.

tl;dr version: Camera is great and everyone who thought NWN2 camera failed hard will love this.
1) The camera does not rotate on it's own unless you are in 3rd person view. If you zoom out properly the camera stays fixed just like you'd expect.
2) Zoomed out the camera is free panning like BG2 (though you can't just pan all over the map sadly).
3) You can zoom in plenty close. Zooming in any closer is pointless for anything but screen shots.
4) No you can not walk and use click to move. The game determines how fast you'll run based on how far away you click. You can walk with wasd but that's it really. 99.9999999% of people who play the game will not care one lick about walking anyways.

Okay, how many of us are coming from Neverwinter Nights 2 - well, you know how many camera options they gave us there. A lot. Here, there are virtually none at all.
This feels like Jade Empire.
You end up steering your character from point A to point B. In Nevewinter Nights 2 I would click on the ground and then pan the camera around my character as my character moved. Nope - can't do that in this game. You have to stare at your character's ass the whole time.
And guess what - as far as I can tell, you can't click on the ground and walk your character there. Your character will always run. Wow, just kills the atmosphere. Yes, there's a run/walk toggle for steering your character, but again, I can't stand steering my character - you just end up staring at your character's ass the whole time.
So is this what we have to put up with because the game was made for consoles. Wow. This is hugely, hugely disappointing. To learn that the camera is far more Jade Empire than Neverwinter 2 - just wow.
People are going to be complaining about this for months to come.
This idiot is obviously on the console version and din't bother to do any research at all before buying. Anyone complaining about this deserves to suffer because they are too stupid to know what they're getting into. I don't remember the camera in ME,or JE or either KOTOR being a problem. Loved them all. I'm not an idiot so I know console version has different UI than PC. so there's that.

No.
To zoom the camera, scroll with your mouse-wheel. When the camera is fully zoomed out, you can pan across the battlefield using the arrow keys, by clicking the mouse wheel and dragging, or simply by nudging the edge of the screen. At any zoom level, clicking the right mouse button and dragging rotates the camera.

He doesn't like it. it is an epic fail. Everyone that has installed it, please uninstall and return the game to Bioware.
Seriously, sorry you don't like it. Most everyone I have heard talk about the game likes it. Bioware couldn't please everyone and you just happen to be one of the few that aren't pleased. Back to NWN2 i guess. Enjoy.
OR.. you can keep playing and find that you can work with it. Then enjoy the game.
