I think I know the technical process, but feel free to double-check and confirm if I'm doing it right or not.

1. Shoot through canopy.
2. Headshot pilot.
3. Remove corpse from seat.
4. Get in Atlas.
5. Stomp on Cerberus with big grin. 

But so far, this is not working.

Everytime I tried it, the Atlas went boom.

So far, I assume it is my squadmates doing this, because as soon as I start shooting, they decide to shoot it too and I haven't worked out if there's a way to get them NOT to shoot at it.

My other theory is that my Sniper rifle does too much damage.
I use a Widow and in ME2, that was a 1 shot kill gun, sometimes even without lining up a headshot.

There are too Atlas in TIM's base. 2 pilots will be running to pilot them. I guess you have beat them to the Atlas for that achievement..

I am not sure because I have no idea how this achievement works as well

Hmm the only time i managed to do it was on Eden Prime at the end of the mission. I was using a Vindicator assault rifle and just kept shooting the cockpit. The cockpit broke and i could get into the mech.

I've done it a few times. Shoot the cockpit and get the glass to break. Shoot only the cockpit. Shoot the pilot through the broken glass. The Atlas will stop and the cockpit will pop open...run there and hijack it. Then have fun!

I use a sniper rifle, Mantis early game then Black Widow once I could afford it.

Problem with shooting the cockpit is... I usually kill the Atlas before I break the canopy. =.=

When you come to a certain point in the Cerberus base where mechs come from the side hallways you can snipe off one of the guys before they can get in the mech.


EDIT: It's just after you send the fighter through the airlock kill the first mech that comes through. Then slowly move up, and shoot one of the guys on the sides before they can get in a mech. If you go to about 11:20 on this video you will see the ones I'm talking about.  
 

Easy way to do it is Pull one, singularity the other

That only works if you currently have them abilities . But that would be an easier way if you have them.

Sometimes I killed mechs before I could hijack them, but sniping the cockpits usually did it for me easily.

I found using my widow tended to just blow them up but the valiant does a better job of breaking the glass. Usually the glass breaks with less than 1/4 of it's armour bar left, so I think if you use anything too damaging it does straight past that point. Also, if there's an engineer about he might run over and repair the damaged mech, then an assault trooper will climb in. Twice so far I've managed to let the engineer repair it then kill the assault trooper before he gets in and have a fully repaired mech to drive around.

You have to physically open the atlas and take a guy out otherwise you won't get it. I beat a trooper to the Mech and go in it but the achievement didn't unlock.

Tried a few times to do it.

All I achieved was to make it go boom.

Maybe I need to use a less powerful Sniper rifle.

Any recommendations?

Pull the pilot out?
As in walk right up to the giant machine of death and poke the guy inside it?

I found tis achevement odd also, i use the mattok for the most part, and i always aim for the glass, but not once in my 2.5 run-thoughs has the glass broken, could it be affected by my overuse of inferno-ammo?

Did it at Eden Prime and Grissom Academy with the N7 Valiant. Would've done it more often but Javik keeps blowing them up before I can get in

In my playthroughs, only that one mech in Grissom Academy was available to enter. Shooting the windshield and killing the pilot worked a few times, but the "Enter" action never commenced.

I've shot the pilot out before without the mech exploding, but my stupid squad mates kept firing at the thing and destroyed it :/

I found that assigning your allies to attack something else helps a lot. It has a small window of damge where it becomes possible, in my experience. About 2-3 armor units.

This also means using a really powerful weapon or a weapon with poor accuracy will prolly get the atlas blown up before the glass breaks. In terms of snipers I could do it reliably using the Black Widow (and that is with full infiltrator upgrades to snipe damage) so that might be a good damage range to compare against.

I can confirm that. I have the echiement, and climbing an unmanned atlas won't unlock it.

You CANNOT hijack an Atlas during MP. By the way, its next to impossible to kill a soldier inside the Atlas with anything less then a precision rifle such as the Sabre or a sniper. I swear the Assault Troops rig the thing to explode as they're about to die just so you don't get it.
