It was hard for me too do for a while as well. The soldiers adrenaline rush helps a lot.

everytime i go to hijack one it glitches out on me..at every opotunity i snipe away at the glass like crazy..it breaks..i kill the guy inside but his body doesnt fall out or disapear..so when i walk up to it and press space bar nothing happens

weapon: Black Widow, no mods, armor piercing ammo

For me the tougher part was getting it with a reasonable amount of health left. Both times it was so damaged that it blew up a few seconds after I climbed in. At least I got the achievement.

One of the things I think is happening is if you use Incendiary, AP, or Warp ammo when you attempt this, the bonus damage from the ammo power is getting applied to the Atlas' armor, and not to the canopy itself, which will make it go down faster than intended.

The Atlas was blowing up on me constantly, then I switched my sniper rifle to cryo ammo from incendiary and was able to do it.

In Jacks Mission there is an empty Atlas at the end you can hijack.

Do you actually have to kill the pilot in an active mech to get this?

I grabbed the empty one at Grissom Academy and killed both pilots before they could reach their Atlas' on Cronos Station and hopped in one of them and didn't get the achievement. Has anyone been able to get this achievement w/ any of these empty mechs?

Okay, how do you disable ammo power then?

I apply it at the start of every mission to all my guns and I'm not sure how or if you can remove it.

If I find another Atlas, I shouldn't use Incendiary Ammo.

Finally got it done, but it wasn't easy!
My first few attempts, EDI kept using Overload and Javik kept using Dark Channel to make it go boom!

And I specifically gave them instructions not to jump down and join the fight! 

I didn't use Incendiary Ammo, used a Widow with Enhanced Scope (to see through the smoke grenade) and aimed at the glass.

However, as you can see, it's not in very good shape, it almost blew up again.

But I got the Accomplishment and that's all that matters!

I did it with my Infiltrator using the Valiant during the recruitment mission of Javik on Eden Prime. I positioned my team away from the fight facing a wall so they wouldn't be able to shoot the Atlas, saved the game and then fired until I killed the pilot. Turned on cloak and hopped into the mech. Had to reload once when another trooper hopped in and the Atlas had too little health for me to attempt again.

Piece of cake, can of corn!  Since I have all of the DLC for ME3 I used the Venom shotgun.  A well-placed charged shot on an unshielded Atlas mech broke the glass, I picked off the driver with the M-77 Paladin pistol (headshot), and then I simply ran up to the mech and hopped in.  It all happened during my second run through of the game as an Engineer (overload comes in so handy against shielded enemies).  The bonus power I chose was Defense Matrix for the shield boost and regen capability (which means modded ammo powers are out of the equation).  Besides, I get such a kick out of showing people that you can kick some serious a** in the Mass Effect games without having to rely upon a sniper rifle!  I did it on Eden Prime as well with difficulty set on Insanity!
