I'll preface this by fully admitting this could just as easily be me playing the game 'wrong'.

At the minute I am a mage and having done Brescillian, The Tower and Redcliffe I am starting to feel really hemmed in by my party member options.

I have to have my character.
I have to use Wynne (as the only half decent healer in the game).

So now I have two empty slots. One of which must be taken by a tank (either Alistair or Shale) and one of which common sense says has to be a rogue (which would be Zevran, because archery isn't very good).

If my own character wasn't a mage then I'd probably have to use Morrigan anyway, simply because mages are so critical.

Does anyone else feel that despite being given a large cast of characters to choose from, you actually only have a  very limited choice at all?

you don't really need a healer

If you buy a large amount of elf root from the vendor with infinite supply

and a large amount of flasks from the camp merchant

you can make a LOT of lesser healing poultices

they're enough to get you through most battles

and on the harder battles, you should have standard / greater / potent healing poultices to use...

so having Wynne with you isn't mandatory.

It's possible to play the game without a healer, and instead of Wynne Morrigan will do you fine in terms of Healing/CC/support.

I'm trying to weigh up how much you miss not having Leilana/Zev in your party in terms of lockboxes. I don't particularly like either and it sucks that I only have 1 slot for either Sten/Dog/Shale/Ohgren.

You don't have to use Wynne. Give your mage the standard heal spell and later make him a spirit healer with group healing. Max out the herbalism skill and make healing potions. All you need is lesser and standard potions. A handful of greater potions in the really tough boss fights and at the end maybe. The potion drinking isn't even that excessive.

Tank is very easy. There is an abundance of fighters in the game. A dual wielding rogue also makes a good frontline fighter.

If you want a utility rogue, you need Leliana. Zevran is a straight-up fighter. Archery isn't bad though. I find Leliana very useful - especially with scattershot and arrow of slaying.

Yes and no, you don't HAVE to use a tank or a healer

You can use 4 DPS if you want, if you do your mage(s) should have heal and you should have plenty of pots.

But burning enemies down fast is as a good defense as going with the "default" setup.

No, not at all. I'm playing on Hard without a healer (I have Morrigan but she is CC focused, not specialized in healing). If you use CC (Crowd Control) properly you don't need a healer, because ideally you'll be killing the enemy so fast while keeping the others stunned, paralyzed, asleep, etc that your tank (assuming built correctly) won't suffer that much damage.

Some interesting replies, thanks a lot for your input everyone.

I possibly should have mentioned that I am playing on the 360, so the idea of having 4 dps and keeping everything else locked down through some other means, whilst apealing, doesn;t seem terribly practical because of the reliance I have on combat tacitcs.

I also don;t see how this could work when you get to a boss fight? Surely you end up having to plunge a lot of points into Constitution to cover up for the lank of a proper tank?

I agree that tank is very easy but I don;t agree with your reasoning Serenity. Shale or Alistair, unless you want to waste a level or two re-orientating Ogrhen or Sten ( I don;t have dog so can;t comment on him).
