Saren was just a prototype version of Marauder Shields.  He is the final evolution.

Harbinger tried to assume direct control so he could force Marauder Shields to commit suicide, preventing him from deterring Shepard away from the beam. He was able to overcome him, but Shepard's pistol of no regard for ammunition, was to much for him to overcome. RIP Marauder Shields Health

This is the reason my Shep stayed single all this time! She knew someone better would come along, and Marauder is simply the best <3

I find his character to be incredibly fascinating.

At first he seems like a generic Turian husk, similar to the ones we've been mowing down the entire game. Sure he gets a lucky shot at Shepard, but aside from that he seems like an average old husk, right?

Wrong.

Our suspicions increase later on when it is realized that he was in fact the final boss battle. And then once we reach the end, and sit there staring at our screens with our jaws on the floor: only then is when it becomes clear.

Marauder Shields was a hero. He was the Guardian of the Gate to Madness and Pain: he knew of the ending and knew he had to stop Shepard at all costs. I imagine this realization came to him back in Mass Effect 1: it would explain why he allowed the Reapers to implant him with Reaper tech. Of course he would be impossible to indoctrinate: the importance of his mission and what he must stop would be burning in him like a candle, keeping the darkness of the Reaper's control out of his mind. No, his mind was still his.

But no, he wasn't a bad guy. He knew he had waited three games for this moment, and had been doing all he could do to stop Shepard without flat out killing him. It was at this moment though, he realized he may not have another option. I imagine the scene from his end went down something like this:

*shoots Shepard's shoulder in cut scene*

Marauder starts forward. The renegade interrupt pops up to finish Shepard off: and yet he pauses. Perhaps there could be another way to end this, without having to murder Shepard?

- Stop, you need to understand!
- You naive fool!
- [headshot]

Unfortunately he paused for a moment too long, and Shepard struck him down. The one true hero of the game. When this realization hit me, that I murdered the one true hero in the series, is when I finally understood. All became clear. I "got" the Mass Effect ending. I have reached enlightenment.

He was my friend. My brother. He was, Marauder Shields.
