To be fair, it was the leading Alpha of the Darkspawn assault, not some "lowly" grunt.

He'll do what all of us least expect.
Because NOBODY EXPECTS THE GREY WARDENS!

The look in his face was the look of rage. I dont think he would of just sat there and took the axe blow.
He knew the battle was lost that day so I would of thought he fought clear and escaped. The Chasind have him.

If he's not dead, I'll kill him myself.

Duncan has more money to make for Bioware yet.
Hmm, I didnt mean for that to sound as snarky as it did. What I mean is
a) well developed and liked IP
ambiguous death
a+b= profit!

Let's see... we see Duncan incapacitated on the ground, looking defeated as he sees the beacon burning and no one coming to help. Then we see the Hurlock (with a gang of other darkspawn behind it) approach and swing his axe, and then the screen fades to black.
I like Duncan, but I can't see how he could have survived this, and I don't really see his death as ambiguous. Even if he hadn't been killed by the hurlock, the impression that I got was that he was already dying from his wounds (or would without treatment) and about to be overrun by other darkspawn. He's good, but not that good.
I'd be happy if I were wrong, but at the same time, if he survived, I don't think we would have had to wait for a sequel to see him again. Besides, it might have been better for Duncan to die in battle early on; Alistair tells your character that Duncan was approaching the end of his 30 years as a Grey Warden anyhow. There's no cure for the taint. Would you rather see him return after falling to madness or illness?
