So I'm about to start a solo char, but I'll probably pick up most party members just to do some more quests etc.  If any party members get locked in for some parts I'll just stick them on Cautious & wipe out the tactics, hopefully that should do the job...?

But my main concern is very near the end of the game, where you have to use your other party members to defend a part of Denerim while the main PC is tracking down the Archdemon.  Will using the other party members for this fight decrease my main's party dmg %?  Also if you don't pick up any party members throughout the game, does this fight simply not take place?  I would be grateful if anyone who's soloed the game could answer these questions for me.

Well, lets go through the party members you can get rid of/not pikc up.

(Possible Spoilers)

Sten - can just not let him out of his cage.

Leliana - ask her to leave.

Wynne - Kill her during the Broken Circle quest.

Zevran - Kill him without talking to him when you are ambushed.

Shale - Avoid him or just ask him to leave.

Morrigan - Tell her to leave.

Dog - Don't complete the Dog quest at Ostagar. Those who are Human Nobles are stuck with him.

Oghren - Tell him to leave or stay in the party camp for 3 real-life days straight and he'll leave (2nd solution not confirmed)

So, with all this in mind, you would have you, Loghain and Dog (if you're a Human Noble). Basically, with Loghain and Dog, they would come with you, but inevitably, they WILL do some damage, so your damage % will go down. Not sure if the fight to protect Denerim's gates will happen. Also, I'm not sure if you HAVE to choose anyone to go with you. IRRC, you select who stays at the gates, and who stays with them. Whoever you take doesn't stay there, so you'll basically just have Dog and Loghain at the gates if you follow what I said and choose to bring just yourself to the final battle, causing the battle for the gates to happen, causing your damage % to drop.

(Possible Spoilers ended)

I haven't beaten the game solo yet, but I will try soon.

Hey, here's what I did. I had Morrigan, but I'd never leveled her up. When that scene came up, before the battle, I gave her all CC spells, and controlled her myself and basically helped the NPC army kill the darkspawn without doing any damage. I used Sleep, Mass Paralysis, the Glyph combo, Walking Nightmare etc. Never cast a single damage spell, unequipped her staff so she wouldn't shoot, worked perfectly.

If you do any damage while controlling the "substitute team" yes, it counts as your party damage. And you can tell everyone to leave before that, but not Alistair (or Loghain if you have him instead) or the dog. So do what I did, keep Morrigan, put Alistair and the Dog on passive and pull them back, and CC the crowd with Morrigan to help the battle.

So it's possible, sort of. But why the heck would you? Is there some kind of award for, well...

Nevermind. I keep seeing these threads about soloing and I've never understood the idea. It's a bit like soloing sex. Fun.

Many thanks Timortis. Almainyny - no party member has to do damage if you stick them on 'cautious', but I still need to win that defense on nightmare without my main char, that was the point. Using Morrigan to CC certainly sounds like the way forward.

People do all sorts of things to make games interesting and different. Instead of questioning why they do this why not try experimenting with things yourself. You may find it opens a whole new way of looking at things instead of always playing through in the typical manner. Broaden your horizons so to speak.

Jimmy, by the way, if you want to make sure you get 100% damage and not 99%, make sure you watch your AoE if you're a Mage, or grenades and such if you have poisons. Any self-inflicted friednly fire damage counts towards party damage but not yours for some reason. I noticed that later, so I never got 100% myself.

You could get rid of most of your party members right before the final battle (ask them to leave). If you don't have enough party members, you don't have to defend the gates.

Or you can just call in an army during that scene. I always sell equipment from characters I'm not using, so I ended up defending the gates with a bunch of naked weaponless guys. I called in the mages, and they cleaned up the darkspawn.

I ran through BG2 without any reloads unless the main character died ... which meant I was carrying dead bodies and items around until I could get them raised. That really made the game interesting and enjoyable.

I couldn't image trying most of the fights in the game with only one character, though - not when they're built to face down a party. (unless the game adjusts difficulties based on your active party size)

Excellent answer! Kudos for not flaming, but for having a great suggestion.

So I've decided to roll an "all girl" party. Too bad the dog's not a b*tch. So Leliana, Morrigan, Wynn and my PC as tank. Too bad we don't get more comments about it. I mean, we get some ingame from npc's about Me being a woman. But there's some serious hate between the ladies, you know. It's very funny.

Once I survive my own friendly fire on Hard, I'll try something more sinister. right now, I might not survive the off-combat conversation.
