Will playing ME1/ME2 give me a good introduction to ME3?

I'm intrigued by ME3, but not enough to plunk down $50-70 sight unseen.  My game playing experience has been solely D&D (WOW, Rift, Skyrim, Amalur).  I thought starting with an almost free ME1 might help me decide to go further into the series.  Do the earlier ME give a good feel of what to expect in ME3?

I asked about the same question a week ago. You can peruse the answers I received at the location below

I have just started out with ME2 and loving it so far. But I have a PS3 and ME1 was not available for that platform.

ME1/ME2 are way better then ME3. ME2 is my favorite personally. Honestly, don't waste money on ME3 unless it's on console, since that's what all EA games are designed for.

It has terrible graphics, terrible animating, and a terrible ending/story.

I torrented it for free in under 3 hours last night, like i'll be doing with all of EA's future titles.

...oh go troll somewhere else

ME3 is a good game and worth the money, its graphics are beautiful and the animations are fine.
The story is brilliant and many of the cut scenes are breathtakingly stunning admittedly the endings are lacking but I don't really care

Yes you should play ME1 and ME2 first and in order. This will introduce you to the series and the characters. I dont recommend starting ME3 first. You won't understand some things, and you won't have the connection to the characters and Shepard. Yes those earlier games do give you a feel of what to expect.

Well yeah it's kind of essential to play the first two. Otherwise, well the story man! The story! In terms of gameplay, ME2 is probably closer to ME3 than ME1.

Just like others I recomend tp try getting the first two games to conect to the characters. The game is amazing and I'm enjoying every moment of the story. Althought if you do conect with the story be warned that you will take personaly every single loss and defeat in game. ME3 does has a better introduction system then ME2 thought, or atleast so I've heard.

You make it sound like these "earlier" games are only good for a feel. They all are made for an xbox360, so are of the same quality and level of involvement. Enjoy them all. That having said, ME1 is more an RPG, ME2 is more like a shooter, and ME3 is.. havent play but more like ME2.

On  the contrary, I'm looking forward to fully enjoying each part.  I was only concerned that the earlier games might employ primitive game mechanics compared to ME3 ---- much like playing Warcraft II and believing that WOW would be the same kind of chesslike game play.  BTW, I started ME1 and am good to go!

The mechanics are pretty much the same, some changed abilities and the like - but not for the worse.
I still get goosebumps and tears rolling when finishing ME1, ME2 is a great game - but not "OH-MY-FREAKING-GOD-kinda-awesome" (as ME1 is). Better graphics, the fights are more intense, a lot of focus on the NPCs and the like, which is a great thing :)
ME3....Stay clear! The ending will ruin everything you hold dear to the series. Ive played ME1 and ME2 countless times, received all achievements, read the cartoons countless times, read the book at least 4 times...I regret every moment I have played the game and every dime wasted on this meaningless piece of crap. I will never play ME again, unless they change the ending (which, I realize, is a far shot).
Well...thats my opinion anyway :P

yeah, go play 1/2 to get a grip on the overall story line, and don't listen to those who think 3 isn't as good. OP, decide for yourself. I will admit that there were some changes in 2 as compared to 1 that I fail to see the reason for

I'll offer a differing opinion. A lot of the fan 'hate' for the controversial endings. (mine included) comes from the degree to which we 'invested' in the game. Playing only ME 3 will degrade the richness of 99% of the experience but might make the ending more palatable to you.

That said I can pretty much say I loved all three games and was rewarded with a swelling sensation of sitting in the protagonists head and BEING the centre of the story. it was great it was epic.... right until the end.

I know I know.. a minority of apologists will now say "Harp no more on that string woman!"

To which I reply "Harp on it still 'til heart strings break"

I'm happy so long as you don't  blow the entire game to hell over the ending. I've seen people on youtube fans hating every part of the game simply because of the ending.

I do have a question thought. What kind of ending did you expected before the game and wanted?

Yes, playing the first two games let you get the best experience in 3 (or so I heard of.)
