I terribly suck at TPS / FPS aiming, so when I tried Mass Effect 1 over year ago, I wasn't very good.

DAO has been like crack, I'm addicted. I've been considering retrying Mass Effect 1 since Mass Effect 2 comes in 8 weeks or so but I'm worried on aiming. It is a bargain bin 360 game :D

Is precise aiming a necessity? How about lowering the difficulty (what are the drawbacks of easy?)? Any build / class tips?

Glad you're interested - I'm biased, but I think there's a lot to love about the game.

Couple suggestions: there are rough mage equivalents (known in-IP as biotics). The "pure" mage class is the Adept, and there are a couple of mixed classes that have mage/biotic elements. Here's the list of classes. I haven't played the console versions of DA:O, but my understanding is that they use roughly the same system as ME - a radial menu to activate skills/powers. With an Adept in ME, you can aim while paused as you select a power. The only downside is having to keep the radial menu selection button depressed (although there may be an option to change that, I'm sorry to say I can't remember).

If you want to play as the warrior (Soldier in ME) class, you can still aim while paused, but that could be a bit...tedious. I've seen at least a couple of people claiming to use this method though, so it has been done. Avoiding the Soldier is probably your best bet to get a non-shooter feel, the Adept definitely fits an RPG mage-playthrough style, and the mixed classes can give you a bit of both.

I had the same problem with ME1 at first. I played it on the Xbox. You get used to it eventually.

I just bought it on the PC not that long ago for $10. I can't stop playing DA:O long enough to play it though.

Lowering the difficulty is one solution, but just a suggestion, why not use the shotgun? You don't need good aim, and once you level up and have enough money to buy a good one, it's really easy to kill enemies.

Accurate aiming isn't a real necessity I don't think. Most enemies are stationary or slow moving. There's an option for aim assist, which does something. I would suggest using lots of biotics/tech, and choose any of the other guns over the assault rifle. Pistol, in theory, has better damage anyways.

Oh, but there are hoppers, and those damn things can be fast. If you're really having trouble with them, remember you can aim while paused. I imagine it'd be useful for the shotgun, not so much the other weapons though.

Missed a couple key questions, whoops. I don't think there are any gameplay penalties with easy (I'm not even sure there's an XP hit, but I haven't tried it so it's possible). Build-wise, it's good to remember that weapon aiming requires talent points to improve - you start out with a wide targeting reticle even in weapons your class can use* that shrinks as you spend points on that weapon type's skill (assault rifle, shotgun, and so on), which improves your margin for error.

I'd be happy to go into more detail or answer other questions - just let me know.

*A bit confusing, because you can equip weapons your class can't use - although that'll be obvious in practice, because the targeting reticle will be unusably wide.

Would engineer / tech (from what I've read, it is the healing / support stuff) be a better approach than a Biotic one?

What class(es) specialise in pistols? In shotguns?

Anyone else know the drawbacks (if any) of easy mode?

What DLC is out there?

How does romance work? Comparisons to DAO would be helpful.

There are quite a few sites with help.
http://masseffect.wi...ass_Effect_Wiki

Look in the class builds section for some guidelines on how to develop your PC. If you really don't like aiming, I would play as a Biotic (mage) or Vanguard (with emphasis on biotics - closer to arcane warrior). It is essentially spellcasting and most have area an effect type radius, so gunplay is less important. It's also more of a tactical class, one in which the computer AI never does as well, so there are some benefits to choosing it for your PC. Let the your other squadmates aimlessly fire away with their assault rifles --- the AI is better with that.

The romance system is considerably less complicated than DAO.  No gifts, no false flags, just be nice.  Hard to mess it up.

@ Jonp382 - No no...I mean how is the romance system (how do you get them to like you, how tied is it to the story, etc.), not how is the love scene...XD
------------
I've heard your first Shepard sucks because of an inheritance system of sorts. Anyone care to explain?

Jonp exaggerates...but not by much. They're less sophisticated than romances in DA:O for the most part (although I approve of not having an approval meter, which seemed like a weird step back for a game that eliminated morality metagaming) - you progress in more-or-less linear fashion over several conversations without much spontaneity. I do really like the romanceable characters, and I think there are some very nice touches in the characterization/dialogue, but the range/depth of DA:O options just aren't there in ME1.

My impression is that biotic talents are more useful/powerful than most tech talents, but you could always try the biotic-tech hybrid. The ME boards have a couple engineer fans, but I haven't seen a ton of players that stick to pure tech. No doubt there are some min-maxers around who can provide better/more specific guidance. I enjoy hitting/shooting things, so I tend to play warrior/fighter/Soldier classes, but I do like the hybrid classes quite a bit in ME. The Vanguard class has biotic abilities and can use shotguns, which is a pretty nice combo (the Soldier class can also use shotguns). Every class can use pistols.

Hmm, what about "I've heard your first Shepard sucks because of an inheritance system of sorts. Anyone care to explain?"

EDIT - Vanguard look very interesting, shotgun + offensive Biotics + decent armor, but Wrex's class is too similar to it at he looks like someone I would like in my party (tough/proud warrior types like DAO's Ohgren are awesome in my book). I don't know if to go with that..,,

BTW, what armor type is the Blood Dragon Armor in Mass Effect 2? And the preorder armor?

The only thing I can think of is they are referring to the "bonus talents" you unlock for playing through the game once (or unlocking through achievements).  Essentially you add one more "talent" to your character by unlocking various achievements.  It is by no means a gimp, but some people would never play as an Engineer or Biotic unless they could add an assault rifle talent to their character.  If you are going to play as a biotic the obvious bonus is the assault rifle, but then if you don't like aiming...   Regardless, the lack of an extra talent is by no means a limiting factor in the fun --- especially for a first playthrough.

As long as you have a tech in your squad I think it would be fine.
