I'm sure deep in her id she wanted to beat him too. Shep just didn't have as much restraint as she did. Did you hear her over the radio when Gerrel's recklessness forced her to rejoin the fray? "Daaaaammmn youuuu, Gerrell!" She was absolutely livid.
Why did Gerrel pull off if you achieve peace with the Renegade rep check? Because he feared that Shep would have the power to reach through the comm channel and gut punch him again. That's what the rep check is really accomplishing: implying "Don't make me mash your solar plexus again."
