Biotic explosions will take barriers down, overload and ED likewise.

As for weapons, most anything works, their barriers are considerably softer than their armor. Automatic weapons tend to perform well against shield/barriers (at least, better than they do against armor), but high damage single shot things work against the barrier and the underlying armor.

Where is the Commendation Pack? I've gone through mission complete twice on Silver against Reapers. I've never seen any notice of this pack at all.

Unfortunately yes. I don't think Bioware\\Casey will mind the poor quality of a smartphone shot.

I dunno how anyone lives through a silver match, I have tried 2, generally the squad is dead around wave 9, we just get swarmed.

Anyways I completed a few with an infiltrator and a few with my soldier, so I should be getting it

Si-Shen the missiles are your best friends when things get hairy, so USE THEM 

Last silver I completed I used my 2 rockets killing 4 Banshees and a few Brutes + Grunts

Just finished my silver run. Extraction threw 6-8 banshees, at least 8-10 brutes (not all at once). We managed to get a full extraction only because we all popped our medi-gels with 5 seconds left.

Think there was like 3 brutes and 3 banshees crowding the landing pad as we left.

Finally accomplished Silver about an hour ago! Having tried many times over the course of the weekend, and failing somewhere in the wave 8-10 range each time, finally getting that full extraction was awesome.

In case anyone having troubles similar to ours is curious: We ended up with a lvl 20 squad - 1 asari adept, 1 bf soldier, 2 engineers. It was still hard, but we actually got awards like "survived 3 waves", and overall it went so smoothly it was surprising. The engineers were able to use overload and incinerate on Brutes and Banshees to strip away armor and shields, and the soldier's grenades were awesome on mass groups of enemies clumped tightly together. I used my adept's stasis on smaller enemies to help keep them off us while dealing with the bigger ones. We selected Firebase White and stuck in a tight group to be able to quickly revive one another, didn't even end up using all of our rockets.

I sure hope the award packs will be worth the effort.

Managed to finish a Silver challenge with a random team. Now I hope I actually get my prize unlike a contest that bioware had years ago for Baldur's Gate. (I'm not bitter at all)

Yup.  With just over 5 hours to spare.

I'm curious to see what our overall brute-killing score is.  Or more importantly WHEN we crossed that 1m thresshold. =D
