Overall this is a good game and the whole series could've been the best series ever. Well...last 5 minutes destroyed it all.
But let's face it - when we cut the last five minutes, every sceene is a good one.

The greatest: Modrin sacrifice.
Good ones: Thrane last rites, Grunt charge and aftermath, Tali's suicide.

But those scenes faded. Sorry - ending is sooo lame.

I loved the whole trilogy, but the atrocious ending overshadowed it all. I cannot even convince myself to replay ME or ME2.

I just need some closure. It would be sad if 150 hours of my life would be degraded by 10 minutes.

We appreciate everyone’s feedback about Mass Effect 3 and want you to know that we are listening. Active discussions about the ending are more than welcome here, and the team will be reviewing it for feedback and responding when we can. Please note, we want to give people time to experience the game so while we can’t get into specifics right now, we will be able to address some of your questions once more people have had time to complete the game. In the meantime, we’d like to ask that you keep the non-spoiler areas of our forums and our social media channels spoiler free.

We understand there is a lot of debate on the Mass Effect 3 ending and we will be more than happy to engage in healthy discussions once more people get to experience the game. We are listening to all of your feedback.

In the meantime, let's give appreciation to Commander Shepard. Whether you loved the ME3 ending or didn't or you just have a lot of questions, he/she has given many of us some of the best adventures we have had while playing games. What was your favorite moment? :)

:devil:

With all due respect to you, Bioware and the Bioware team, there isn't much we cheerished in the game once we managed to finished it. But before I even mention that, let me go over some issues I found before the ending hit me.

1 - There was a huge lack of RPG elements, as if they had been watered down from the previous games;
2 - It has been said that our choices mattered, but as the story progress I was able to find huge plot holes (Udina as Council member, Rachni queen alive - clone or not, among others);
3 - The characters added on the second game of the Franchise played a minor part only (and some from the first game as well), either for one mission time (short or long), or by monologues where the player had no choice on what to say;
4 - The game went from a Action RPG (the first game) to a TPS with a few rpg elements. Don't take me wrong, I enjoyed the action style fighting, but not at the expense of the rpg elements;
5 - The story was too short. The first game of the franchise had me playing for 50 hours, the second one, with a much shorter story kept me playing for 40 hours. This third game was only 37 hours long in single player mode ( I do not play MP), and too many areas that could have been explored and would make the game richer were left untouched;
6 - The multi player aspect of the game and requirement for the "perfect" ending. I did all side quests,  I went to every planet, every system to get everything there was. My maps showed 100% resources gathered everywhere, and I still didn't get my "final" EMS over 4000, because that is just impossible without the MP element.
7 - There was no high res graphics, meshes were poor sometimes, technical glitches crashed the game once or twice, and not following the right quest sequence would cancel the quest;
8 - Quest Logs and missions logs were terrible and hard to keep up with. Won't even mention the CODEX.

On the other hand we had;

1 - A fast paced story expected since it was the end of the galaxy;
2 - Action and TPS elements were good;
3 - Powers were slightly better than on ME2;
4 - The talking between squad members and random npcs on the areas was a great a idea and added to the feeling of immersion;
5 - The art of the landscape, especially the citadel we beautiful;
6 - Despite what I mentioned about the lack of interaction with the characters (squadmembers) from the previous games, some of their stories had a beautiful and well written ending in ME3 (sad but beautiful nonetheless).

Unlike most critics and most players, I will not rate this game too high or too low. The game had flaws, glitches and was not that innovative. It didn't bring any new concept to the gaming community, and it was pretty much based on existing titles - both in story  development style and combat style. If you do not consider the past games of this franchise I would say this was a fair game deserving a 6 or maybe a 7 out of 10.

However, this is not just one game. Unlike titles as Dragon Age 2 that brought a new story completely independant from the original game, this game was the end of a saga that has kept us players ennamorated for the past 5 years. We could overlook the glitches and technical issues, we could even fill the gaps in the plot holes with our own minds coming up with excuses to why it happened this or that way. We just cannot accept that such a long and well written story would come to such a end. I don't mean it's sad, or that I didn't like it because of my own feelings to the characters or the game.

The problem is that there is no ending. The writing of the last scenes was poor and lacking, the artistic view applied used a element as old as Greece itself called Deus Ex Machina, that states no matter what you do the ending is doom. It reminds me of the old greek plays such as Edipos (and others too actually) when we watch the play knowing the bitter end and there is nothing we can do about it. But on a play we have no interaction, we are just expectators of someone else's story. And this is where the community was hit the hardest. We were not mere expectators, we were in part writers of our stories, because the entire franchise was based on choice. This game prior to launch was advertised as if our choices would and could change the endings, but as it was presented to us, we have only the choices between running the car into a tree, into a bus or out of a cliff. In one of the endings we come out and grasp for air, before the credits roll.

This lack of closure killed the replay value of the entire franchise. I have been a long time fan of Mass Effect and it has been 6 days since I finished it, and I don't have the will to even look at it any longer. I know that is very unlikely that anything will change in the game regarding the endings, but for a company that once was able to produce games with perfect endings such as Dragon Age: Origins (Neverwinter Nights and others), I believe it is my duty to point this short coming from Bioware regarding this otherwise great franchise.

PS. Tried to keep spoliers to a minimum.

I loved the series, I have had invested countless hours, playing and replaying more then just a handful to cover almost every aspect of the Mass Effect Story (Male / Female / Renegade / Paragon / Romances) just so I could replay all of them in ME3 and see what all those choices meant for each ending for each character. And do not get me wrong, ME3 was great, right up to London and the events that followed.

Most of all, right at the end.

Why did Bioware who up to this point, after crafting a believable universe that was worthy of the tile "Best Science Fiction game of the year (if not decade) decided to not only throw science (even made up ones)  out of the window but break everything the previous two games and almost a good portion of the last one had built up?

The final choice for example.

Why would ANY Shepard, not just *my* Shepard actually decide what essentially is the "Mother / Father/ whateverhaveyou Controller Reaper" tells you is a good idea and goes through with it?

Commander Shepard chose his own path, forged an alliance that no one thought possible and when told by an AI to choose a way to die, which by the way, echoes Sovereign's "We impose order on the chaos of organic life. You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it." line your Shepard actually went, "ya, I'll go kill myself now, because you demand it of me."

W.T.F.?

Had this been "A" ending, perhaps for the "Ahole, lets ****** everyone off Renegade Shepard" I might acept it because he'll be alone and depressed but for anyone everyone else, who had made choices to unite the galaxy, its so out of character, its just wrong.

I had to write in my own head, an ending that went something like this:

It'll start when the UNITED galactic force lands on earth and retakes London and assumes that you have gotten all possible Assets. (or most of them)

Cut Scene starts when Shepard and Team are inserted into London.

Krogans on their Keliosaur mounts charging and taking down Banshees, Geth and Quarian engineers setting up hack proof auto turrets "mowing the lawn" to clear the path towards the conduit. Terminus mercs probably lead by Zaeed getting down and nasty in hand to hand, pistol shot to the face, FIBUA combat. Combined human and Turian forces taking on Harbinger to give Shepard and his team a chance to get to the conduit, which they do.

Goes back into player mode and combat.

Shepard and team (ALL of them) then fight their way to the Citadel's core.

During which Catalyst shows up and tries to convince Shepard that the Reaper solution is the right one.
Dialogue ensures during which Shepard and Squad members realize that Catalyst is really "The AI controlling the Reapers and how it came about.

Perhaps the original AI was programmed to protect its own people but saw that organics in a war against machines would logically loose to machines since machines do not tire, do not need to birth new life, do not need to eat, sleep and feels no pity. Thus it was logical in order to "protect them", they had to be more machine like. First with mechanical augmentations, and over the centuries slowly turning to accept a "normal" life as full cyborgs, till finally the AI decided that Organics were too irrational, too emotional for their own good and thus, to "save" them, made them Reapers.

Catalyst expresses disdain for organic life and tells Shepard in no uncertain terms that he will die.

Shepard disagrees.
Back to player mode and combat.

Mid way to the Citadel’s heart, Catalyst activates the self-destruct sequence for all Mass Relays. (fail this final mission and they all blow up, effectively killing all life in the entire galaxy)

Cut scene:

Admiral Heckett updates Shepard and team, tells them that reports from all over have Mass Relays Charging up, and that Its up to Shepard and to do what they can.

Shepard Speech.
Choose final Squad Members.
Fight to the Central Chamber.

Shepard and Team this time finds Indoctrinated Cerberus squads in their way. Clears them and then faces the Illusive man. Who then tries to take control of Shepard via his cybernetic implants. IF Love Interest is in Squad she/he gives Shepard strength to resist. IF not, Anderson steps up and takes the Shot meant for Shepard and says "... More than once Shepard...More than once... *blacks out*

Boss Fight.
Wins fight.
Mass Relays prevented from going Ultra Super Nova.

CUT SCENE.

Now this is where your EMS comes into play, Depending on how well prepared your troops are, you'll see different levels of victories vs casualties on both sides. But the cut scene WILL show all your gathered forces fighting shoulder to shoulder, finally pushing back Reaper ground forces, then hitting Harbinger with everything they have got. Makos, Hammerheads, Geth Grand Primes, supported by Asari Biotic Commandoes and our kids (Jack) from the Grissom Academy linking together to form a "mega shield" and hitting Harbinger like a runaway freight train.
Harbinger goes down.

Catalyst pops up one last time and tries to talk Shepard out of de-activing it / the reapers.
Renegade / paragon conversation path  with the final choice of

"Let it live Shackle it and Humanity will gain full reaper tech and forces to fight for them,

Or

“Kill the AI because it is flawed.”

Choosing the "Renegade" path will then go into a cut scene depicting the "Human Empire" complete with "Dark, menacing, evil looking ships and troops "keeping galactic peace." Perhaps we’ll see Shepard in the Emperor’s chair with his “advisors”.  We then have James Vega give the final epilogue of what happens to each and every "key" companion after the Reaper war.

Choosing Paragon Path will show Humanity not only Chairing the first Council meeting (Anderson lives) since the reapers attack, but that the other councillors now deferring to his judgement. Galactic Rebuilding begins with every race lending a helping hand, even the Batarians who in good will freed their slaves. At the end  EDI does the Epilogue.

At least., that is how I see my story ends.
It is a pity that I have to come up with something like this to "fill in the blanks" / replace what we were originally given by Bioware.

I'd also like to say this BioWare: If you do respond to us and do fix the ending you will have earned a lot of respect from me (an already semi-big fan). I'd buy BioWare games out of trust for many years to come, and ME would go down as one of the most beautiful trilogies I'd have ever experienced. But, that's just me personally, I can't speak for anyone else. :)

I did love fighting Kai Leng like so many have mentioned he really got to me, I've never been so infuriated with a character in a game like that before, it was great! As many have also stated, the ending seriously ruined the entire game. I can't believe 5 minutes could completely erase everything that we had previously worked for in the 3 games and make it irrelevent.

There is no such thing as a 'favorite' moment. Any conversation with Garrus. My Shep checking out Kaidan's rear as she welcomed him back on-board the Normandy. My Shep's goodbye to Kaidan/Garrus. (Because there IS no Shepard without Vakarian - ever!) Mordin's ride up the elevator. Grunt's charge. Thane's sacrifice. Jack. The entire game was visually, emotionally, stunning. For the most part, it made sense. And it was amazing. Until, you know.

But explain this to me: These are spoiler forums. People come here for spoilers. There's no one in the WORLD who hasn't been spoiled for the endings by now if they've visited these boards (or most of the gaming websites in existence). What exactly do you hope to gain by not discussing the endings 'until most are finished playing'?

I hate the endings - but even though I do have an emotional investment in the story, I'm willing to headcanon the end in order to be able to play through 1-3 again, so I can experience the story (I have plans to stop at the Cerberus mission until you guys tell us wtf is up with the ending, and plans to stop at the 'big speech' if the endings continue to be unsatisfactory).

Is that what you wanted? Did you want us to hate the endings so much - to find them so illogical, so ambiguous, so inappropriate - that we can literally bring ourselves to ignore the last 10-30 minutes (and all of the hard work that went into it) so that we can stomach playing this franchise? And still you wait, while people grow more and more disillusioned, while more people sell their copies, while people slowly lose hope in Bioware.

Maybe you guys are waiting for this to all blow over. And you know - someday it will. When people have become so disillusioned with Bioware that they seek solace in the arms of the next big thing to come out. After all, I just heard a release date announced.

Unless I see evidence for the claim that BW is listening I keep my fav moments to myself. I find it ridiculous that, considering that massive outrage going on right now, all we get is "we're listening". No, you don't.

1) 16 endings, all are essentially identical sans one or two things.
2) Plotholes
3) Obvious lazyness. Talis pic being the worst screw up ever. Don't want to animate her face? Don't do it and keep her masked.
4) Our choices throughout the trilogy mattered how, exactly?
5) The ending(s) are satisfying and give a sense of accomplishment in what way?

Break the silence and show your player base some respect.

As others have said, 99% of the game was brilliant but it was like having an amazing meal where every bit is the best you've had... until the last bite, in which you find a finger nail. Doesn't matter how delicious every previous bite was anymore, they are all tainted by the last bite.

While playing the game, I raved to my wife about it - she had played the previous 2 games - despite not liking the shooter element, she loved them. I had to tell her multiple times per day how amazing ME3 was without giving any spoilers. I told her she would literally laugh out loud, cry, think about her decisions and be generally stunned by some of the scenes.

But then I reached the end of the game... and had to tell her she should NOT play the game because it will undo her love of the previous two.

I have to clarify that this has nothing to do with a "sad" ending or wanting a happy ending. I loved the way you killed Legion despite my saying out loud multiple times "You had better not kill Legion!" I thought Mordin's death was poignant and fulfilled his storyline in ME2. I'd have been fine with Shepard making the ultimate sacrifice and, in a way, it's hard to imagine him living after all this (what, he's 90 years old telling people about the good old days?).

However, the ending was SO unlike the rest of Mass Effect in almost every way that it felt like someone else had come in to finish the game. I feel like some of the comments being made about how good it is that people are talking about it, that it was an artistic choice, etc. completely miss the point. In my circle of friends, we also still talk about Highlander 2 - because it was so awful that it hurt our enjoyment of the first movie. Compare this to endings like Inception's, for which we debate the MEANING, not the QUALITY.

There's no way the ending of Mass Effect wouldn't be sad for fans - even a "ride off into the sunset" ending would be bittersweet for us, and that's great. Give me an ending like "Shane" (not the Walking Dead Shane - the movie "Shane" :)) or "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" - endings that make sense but are sad/tragic are fine.

Instead, we got the Matrix Revolutions, Lost or Battlestar Galactica. Does any creator want their creation to be remembered like those? "Great story, but ruined at the end."

It was pure brilliance.

Until the ending.

This post sums up my feeling entirely. I rolled my eyes as the bile and rage being spewed at both EA and Bioware when the script was leaked. I avoided any talk of spoilers, and held out hope that the game would be amazing.

And it was.

Untill the last 20 minutes or so.

I have never been so let down by a game before. My wife, who doesn't even play the games herself, just watches me play them, was somewhere between disgust and fury. (I swear, I was sooo close to talking her into getting a copy of the trilogy for herself to play.)

You still have a fan in me, bioware. A hurt, dissapointed, and wary fan at this point, but a fan nonetheless. Please restore my faith in your game and your company.

Crew interaction was an unexpected improvement. It'd be pretty easy to overlook it, but a feature that was already so vastly improved upon from ME1 -> ME2 was even more improved for ME3. No comment on the romances, though. Don't care about that stuff. Lore and story is more important to me.

Just curious, Chris, but why are you afraid of spoilers?

Anyone in this section has already either
1.) beaten the game, thus faces no fear of spoilers
2.) doesn't care about facing those spoilers in the first place.
or
3.) is discussing jumping ship, thus leaving your company with less profits.

(Granted, group three is still either part of group one or two)

Starting the game on the moon of Palaven was genius. It set the tone of the game moreso than the Earth sequence had. If the Turians got blitzkreiged, no one has a chance.

And then the irony of ending it all with an elevator ride on the Citadel...

It's hard to pin down, the whole thing was just a cavalcade of brilliance up until the ending. I guess the little moments between you and your squad were what really formed the backbone of the experience. Little things, talking to Liara about kids, missing the shot with Garrus on purpose, me and Kaiden coming to terms. I also like that little talk in the end, about me and Garrus storming the gates of heaven to get to the bar.

Then there are the death scenes of Mordin and Thane, both beautifully tragic and still somehow uplifting (Kind of how I hope the ending will end up).

Well, there certainly are very nice parts in Mass Effect 3, but that is besides the point. They are all ruined by the ending. Until this is adressed in some way, any further dialogue about the game is meaningless.

If you don't count the last 5 minutes, definitely one of the best games I have ever played. Some parts made me laugh out loud, some cry, and some left me so emotionally exhausted that I haven't really been able to do anything useful after I beat the game.

If the ending is truly not what it looks like (which I believe), and we'll get a DLC with a "fix" for free, I'll build a shrine for BioWare as a thanks for making one of the best trilogies in the gaming history.

I too am disgruntled over the "ending" I would like to believe the indoctrinated theory however I would be very upset if I had to pay for the "real" ending if there is one, I would rather read it on a wikia if this is the case.

Things I enjoyed:

I enjoyed everything except for the last 15 minutes of the game.

My most favorite was the romance sequences. (I had Garrus) I loved the "date" we went on when we shot paint tubes on top of a ledge in the citadel.
