I just finished ME3 yesterday and I feel rather dissatisfied with the ending. Emotions ranged from disbelief, to outright shock, melancholy, and later today, some anger. Like many others, I'm absolutely baffled that Bioware thought this ending was acceptable; not because there is no happy ending: I fully went into this expecting Shepard to die or no longer resemble himself. In fact, I was fully expecting a merger of the Control+Synthesis concepts via something like Duncan Idaho in Sandworms of Dune. So no, I'm not looking for a happy ending. But like many others; I want one that I understand. It's not that I'm against philosophical depressing endings; it's that the series wasn't really built that way. There were always hard-hitting questions, but at the end of the day it was always a Sci-Fi War/Military story.
That said, a lot of people have made lists concerning what the major problems with the ending was, and while I agree with some of them, I feel some points have been missed or should just be touched on over and over again so Bioware understand there are many, many people who feel the same exact way. For the purpose of this, I played Male Shep, so Shep will be referenced as "he" and not "her", just for ease of writing.
1. Is the ending even real?
I have to address this first because I can't even get into what's wrong with the ending without first going into whether or not the ending actually occurs; why? Yes, because of the indoctrination theory. And there is enough logic there to make a case for it. Not because of "Well dude how is he breathing there in the Citadel like that!??!111uno". No, but because things like Shepard's constant hearing of voices in his dreams with the child, the fact that the same haze keeps occuring in the dreams and then in the final scenes with the Illusive Man; on top of the game constantly questioning whether Shepard is really himself right up until the very last Cerberus mission and the fact that they brought him back to life with tech from Soveriegn. Obviously the whole reason anyone would even mention this is the one ending where Sheperd gasps what many are referring to as a "waking breath" after the entire nonsensical part of the ending is over, and I have to admit the wreckage looks more like London then the Citadel. Keep in mind that this ending is also the only ending which the Reapers would actually oppose as the other two are very familiar of Saren and TIM; both of whom were indoctrinated themselves. But, the nonsensical part brings me to the next point that everyone keeps harping on.
2. The endings are riddled with plotholes.
So, let's assume the endings are all true and its what Bioware intended.
Major points here:
A. The Normandy was LEADING the fleet against the Reapers, a la ME1, how in God's name did it get to a relay as this battle was occurring? Oh man abandon the fight!? Come on guys, really? Not only that, but they land on some odd planet with characters THAT YOU PICKED TO ACCOMPANY SHEPARD TO EARTH. Guys, you couldn't get more nonsensical. It just doesn't fly; I'm sorry.
B. The Reaper star-child's explanation is pretty awkward; Yes the series has had a lot of Synthetic vs Organic debate since day 1. But considering some of the content that has been kept up with since ME1, The Dark Matter thing for instance, and the fact that the Reapers are the most powerful thing in the galaxy, you have to wonder if "We really needed them to keep organic life alive by wiping out the advanced ones every 50k years" even really makes sense. In fact, it honestly feels like that after the original ending idea was leaked, you guys felt rushed to put out something new, and it didn't work. I'm oddly curious as to what occurred behind the scenes there; and it's too bad we'll never know.
C. Not only is the Reaper star-child explanation for the Reapers awkward; Shepard just sits there and takes it, and you're given no dialog options. Kind of funny since Mac revealed that he had planned a lot of dialog options but a discussion with Casey convinced them to scrap it. I can see a reason for scraping some of it, but, it didn't end well with what you left. Sorry.
D. The whole thing with all the relays destroyed and everyone being stuck in Sol system/Earth. Yeaaaaah. Everything that's been said about that so far. Pretty much spot on. Not very well thought out IMO. Which brings me to..
3. The End to Shepard's story or the End to Mass Effect's universe?
This one really baffles me, because no one else has mentioned it as far as I'm aware... BUT, weren't we told this was only going to be the end to Shepard's story and not the ME universe? That way Bioware could do more things with ME's universe, right..? So.. either Bioware plans on sticking to prequels.. or they plan on making games/stories after the events of the war when all the relays and the citadel are destroyed, races are stranded without space travel and any incoming imports/exports, and basically everything we loved about your galaxy is gone?
Huh.. Riiiight. What happened there?
I could probably go on with this list if I wanted to be as detailed as possible but I've expressed myself enough. Bottom line is that Mass Effect was the GREATEST video game franchise to date; bar none. Mass Effect 3 improved upon everything the first two games had: It was touching with how your comrades dealt with impending doom, it as dark and gritty with great friends who got sacrificed or sacrificed themselves for the war effort and the continued existance of the current galaxy, it was adrenaline pumping with great action sequences and a improved combat style, and the writing was honestly incredible. BUT it will be forever overshadowed by this horribly nonsensical ending unless you guys do something about it.
I don't care for happiness, or for Shepard living; I really don't. But you guys chose to TRY for a philosophical/artsy ending; something that didn't occur in either of the previous games, and comes out of left field. Not only did you try it, but you failed at it.
When I think back to Mass Effect I won't be able to just say "Absolutely Amazing", I'll be forced to go "Excellent series right up to the ending, what a massive failure for an epic franchise."

@MaddestHater yes, the hints for something to come are all there, otherwise Shepard breathing would be just an easter egg (and a less than logical one to be honest)
I would'd state that it's not logical, since we don't the facts.

ME1: Protheans build his own mass effect relay on Ilos to get to the Citadel - the Conduit, so not only Reapers know how to build it - IF relays are Reapers technology.
ME2: dying sun on Heastrom - someone/something do an experiment with dark energy, for what? - Building own mass effect relay on the collapsing sun?
Those things are not mentioned in ME3 - why?
For me ME ended on Marauder Shield.

But instead we get an ending where every system gets separated, guess Bioware wanted to show that they're sick with the series by now and don't want any kind of sequel. Shame.. like if a girl kicked you in the balls on purpose after your date, which you thought best in your life.. ;p

Maybe they'll just not say anything for 5 months and by then people have moved on and then they release random dlc..but then folks see its not related to fixing the ending and old wounds open up. Its a strong possibility people will move on and play new games and forget but the second new dlc is released and people log in to check it out they'll remember how bioware ignored 90% of people in regards to the ending and won't buy it.
Have you guys (Bioware) put any thinking into this at all? Or have you made enough money from ME3 sales to consider it a success regardless?

Even if such DLC was made free for every owner of the game, to let people sit in limbo over a disappointing (and poorly written) ending until you say, "Surprise! Here's the real ending free for download" is just asking for an angry backlash. It simply puts all that more pressure on the writers/devs to really pull out their A game.
To do it right the first time could have contained gaffs the fans would laugh at and forgive. To do a "bait and switch" with a new (and free) ending to be released after the original ending generates controversy only means your audience is going to be all that more critical in reviewing your work.

I thought the game was spectacular from start to finish. Sure, there were some rough edges and blank spots, but all in all, this was an awesome ending to a great trilogy.
Mass Effect 3 was just as i expected it to be. But as always, there are pros and cons that stand out from the anticipated features.
The following things were significant in my opinion and surprised me in some way; in true ME-fashion.. surprised me either in a good way or in a bad way.
PROS
* NO MORE ANNOYING PAIN-IN-THE-ASS HACKS OR BYPASSES!!! YAAAY!
* The game had a very good development of the storyline as one progresses through the game. There were a lot of emotional moments which were very moving and also a lot of moral issues that made me feel as i was actually taking part in a deeper philosophical adventure.
(there are more pros, but right now i am to sad to recall everyone of them. Why am i sad? because the best damn gaming-trilogy is over
CONS
(Its always easier to bring up things you wanted but never got, than to praise things already in there, so don't read too much into the fact that there are more cons than pros^^ i still love this game)
* The small number of squadmates was a little unsatisfying. What? They couldn't have made room for more squadmates despite the fact that ME3, just like ME2, took up two whole discs?
* ME3 did not feel as big as previous installments (again, even despite the need for two discs); probably due to the downplaying of non-linear gaming. The predecessor, ME2, felt more thought-out and creative in the fact that every squadmate had a reqruitment mission PLUS a loyalty mission. The whole concept of the Suicide mission's success depending on so many variables was way cool and very original.
* I was furthermore a little perturbed about the lack of music during certain vital events. Where the music for instance perfectly accentuated the climactic moment when fighting on Rannoch to decide the fate of the quarians, the fight to retake Earth on the other hand, with the exception of short moments of adrenal-boosting music during intense but brief altercations, was disappointingly silent and didn't nearly have the same emotional rush that normally accompanies the last stage of a game. It was the same during the tutorial in Vancouver and other notable areas; events that deserved adrenaline that follows good background-music were left completely bland. All the silence did was give the image of a field-training excercise.
* The lack of screen-time for the geth as well as other notable war assets such as the "enraged" batarians or Aria's mercenaries during the last battle for earth was a disappointment. I know the game mostly revolve around the bigger races such as the turians, asari and the krogan, but come on; we didn't give free will to the geth for nothing? I would've at least wanted to see some primes in action tearing up husks in London or something.
* The supposedly personal vendetta between Harbinger and Shepard became completely non-existant in ME3 as all we got to see of that bastard was a brief cameo in London at the beam; not even a "SHEPARRRD. YOU RESIST, BUT NOW YOU WILL DIE" or something similar. Just a few red beams and then he flies off.. (!) ... frikkin skinmite..
* And yes, the endings.....
Let me be clear. I actually liked the endings. They were very beautiful, epic and i always suspected that Shepard would die in the end anyway, so no unpleasant surprises for me there.
But although i do appreciate the sheer epicness and creativity of the endings, there are a few issues i want to bring up.
For example.. there are still questions regarding plotholes such as the true origin of the Reapers, who the Illusive man really was and most importantly, what happened to every squadmember after the endings. I STRONGLY believe that is needed for closure. I mean, we did bond with them over the course of three consecutive games after all and i think we deserve that.
And speaking of the characters, why were Joker, Anderson and Liara the only ones that we glimpsed during the flashback scene? The others were equally deserving of such an honor.
Overall, the "different" endings are a little too similar for my taste.
- In each, Shepard apparently dies (although the aftermath of the "Destruction-ending" cryptically leads us to believe otherwise; not to mention confuses us wildly)
- In each, the Mass Relays are apparently destroyed.
- In each, Joker does his little try-to-outrace-the-shockwave thing and ends up on a planet somewhere, along with characters that i have no explanation whatsoever as to how they got back on the Normandy from Earth during the last battle.
Oh, and speaking of that, why was EDI left out of the "Control"-ending? Synthetics didn't die in that one.
Furthermore, in the "Synthesis"-ending, it would've been clever by Bioware if they had Joker not limping anymore, cause of the new "framework-DNA" that's supposedly better than when organics and synthetics were separate entities. But that was just a personal touch of my own ^^
Ah well...
How i would've done an ending:
Not so original, but I would've done something like this...
I would've had Shepard annihilate the reapers somehow (which they deserved after everything they've done) and then had him speak as a disembodied voice in an esotheric, poetic manner about life and ideals in the background whilst flashes of what happened to each and every team member after the battle for Earth played out before us, so as to give a perfect sense of closure to the game and characters that we've gotten close to over the years.
In short, all the answers we've sought should be given so that we are enlightened, but we ourselves should not be lost in the process.
So many hours have gone by, so many wonderful choices and experiences... the OH-MY-GOD!s and the AHAA-NOW-I-GET-ITs .... i am very sorry to see this game end..
Thank you, Bioware, for the best damn trilogy ever.
It is with a heavy heart that i have to accept its inevitable end.

So uh...guys and girls, do you actually think we're going to get anything at all or no? I wish Bioware would just flat out say "No, deal with it" or "Yes..something is in development, we have listened and after heavy consideration...". I have a feeling there's a better chance of hell freezing over than the latter but can't we at least know? I read some of the PR talk in the other topic so I guess the answer is "NO".
The real question is if Bioware is willing to accept they buggered the franchise and decides to scrap any further Mass Effect game projects or if they are playing the long game and this is all a tactic to generate controversy to move into the next Mass Effect project in development.
Example...Splinter Cell.
It was a great game series. Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory....
Then the devs came out with Double Agent. Then they came out with Conviction.
Both games failed to live up to the expectation of the fans of the series. Trying to make the series more like every other game out there ruined the uniqueness that made Spinter Cell Splinter Cell. A lot of the true fans would have preferred the devs killed the story line after Chaos Theory.
Bioware wants to continue the Mass Effect universe. There are ways to do this with the existing ending. Paramount did this by making Enterprise (prequel) rather than yet another "next gen" Star Trek show. However, in this case, could Bioware depend on the fans to buy into it?
Promises were made for ME3...these promises were blatently broken in how poorly written and executed the existing ending is. If Bioware/EA is content to let it stand...they have no basis to believe the next Mass Effect title will sell on release day until long after the few fanatics buy a copy and honestly critique if it is worth the $60-80.
The fan base is why a series keeps selling. Getting Mass Effect to sell well was a challenge. Once that was a hit, Bioware/EA could count on those who bought and loved ME to buy ME2. If they "ruin" the game concept for the fans, why should they think the next Mass Effect game will sell well at all?
Hence, I have hope that there is a larger strategy being played here. I'm not 100% sold on the "indoctrination" theory, but it is plausible the existing ending is a ruse to buy time for a proper ending that will be incredible...likely setting the groundwork for the next Mass Effect release being planned.
However, this is a dangerous gambit by Bioware/EA. Such new DLC had better be free as the fans are up in arms over the existing ending. More so, the poor devs/writers burdened with making the "real" ending are going to have to be brilliant and produce a perfect product because it WILL be heavily scrutinized by the fans. If indeed this is Bioware/EA's strategy, the ones calling the shots either are brilliant writers with massive cojones or they are utter idiots who will tank the franchise with such bone-headed tactics.
Only time will tell which one it is.

I agree with the sentiments expressed throughout this thread. I finished yesterday and my initial fears of surprise that it ended so abruptly became sadness when I realised that I actually had such limited choices and that I would never find out what happened to my friends.
I guess I'll have to work through it if this is how it ends- I wish they would just come out and say it one way or the other. I keep hoping to find they'll offer us a bit of optional DLC with a more complex ending.
I would have thought the choices should have been something like that:
-take control of the reapers, but lose contact with my friends & deal with the consequences of becoming one with the synthetics (a reasonable choice for those who didn't think the IM had it completely wrong)
-destroy the reapers, but run the risk of destroying the Earth
-forcing the reapers back into Dark Space, but knowing things would repeat in 50 000 years.
Broadly, depending on my galactic readiness, different consequences could have happened in terms of:
-me surviving or not (for instance, if I tried to destroy the reapers, but wasn't "ready" enough, could die)
-how many of my friends survived
-how much of the fleet survived
And then, regardless of the option, an epilogue particularly focussing on the lvoe interest and close relationships. Or, if I survived, the start of my recovery from the no doubt horrific injuries.
I want to be clear- I *loved* this game. It was amazing. Apart from the last 2 minutes. Even that scene between Anderson and Shepard after the Crucible docks was just beautiful. Part of my sadness is def about the end of this great series- but mostly, it's about the unsatisfying end.
totally agree....I also imagined an ending like this....I still wonder what the hell biower's team was thinking....

Browsing this forum, looking at everyone's ideas/ opinions of the endings,My recent thoughts are what if BW have deliberately set this ending out as a PR stunt to gage the reactions of everyone whilst holding back on dlc content that would show a more acurate ending. I honestly cant think why else would there be that little snippet of the rubble scene at the end?
I've gone over the ending several times and the only definate options as we all know now are, 2 to1 in favour of the Reapers continuing and winning.
I personally dont think that was the end.....I think also that a door has been left ever so slightly open for an even bigger finish, one that does justice to the whole ME series.

How much I would've liked a happy ending, the house with tali, the ending isn't bad, in fact it sums up to all what we've been fighting for and against.
If I remember right the child says something like "we do this because otherwise organic life will create synthetic life that will start a war and wipe out organic life" am I right?
Isn't reapers possible already is that product in some way? But some logic still tell them to keep organic life in check?
Or that organic life that created the reapers were at war, but instead of killing organic life they keep organic life in check by wiping all advanced organic every 50k year?
But the plot holes!
Why is Normandy flying away with ALL the crew members that were on earth, just took a random pickup? Avoiding the reapers?
And with all the mass relays destroy do the whole fleet stay on earth?
It's not like they're going anywhere fast...
Without mass relays it's quite hard.
The planet is not that hard to think of, although it is quite random to crash on it.
Also since the Normandy crashed, is all ships of like an emp in the whole galaxy destroying all electronics?
There is a lot more than this.

If Shep is asleep and the real ending is coming I would enjoy that. As dangerous of a ploy it may be, it is painfully evident that they have us hooked. Therefore, the ploy's benefits far outweigh it's risks in this situation. This would be the biggest cliffhanger that I know of. If it isn't a ploy... Then I don't want to live on this planet anymore. ಠ_ಠ

Same here I pre-ordered DA 2 and I actually liked it quite a bit. Though it wast exactly what I expected. Same for ME 3 and even though it is a lot more finished game than DA 2 was its weak ending drags the game down.
So no more pre-ordered Bioware games for me unless they fix this ending mess.

I haven't finished the game because I just cant do it after seeing the spoilers online I didn't want to play until the end.
What I saw broke my heart. All my time spent was for nothing. The Shepard I saw in the spoilers was not my Shepard. She wouldn't do this she would fight and not accept the inevitable.
Everytime I think of replaying any of the games my eyes well up with tears. If I hadn't felt a connection with the characters I wouldn't care. But I did feel a connection to them. Garrus and his calibrations, Tali and her dreams of building a house on Rannoch, Wrex who called Shepard his sister. Thane who fought bravely even though he had a dibilatating disease. Jack and her fierceness. Miranda who wanted to protect her sister. Mordin who wanted to save the Krogan. Joker the best pilot in the galaxy, Grunt who fought to prove he was a true krogan, Kaiden who my Shepard loved. This list could go on for a long time but I will stop there I just wanted to paint a picture.
The ending didn't give me closure. Didn't fulfill my dreams of helping these people instead Shepard doomed them all to a heart wrenching fate.
The beauty of the trilogy was taken away in the last 10 minutes. WHY?
I have been so angry, dissapointed, upset, devastated, confused. In fact there are no words to describe how I feel. While this might seem overdramatic to some this is how i feel. My friends and bf have said Claire you are 26 it's just a game get over it. I just cant. This game is something I am passionate about because of it's beautiful story and characters I immersed myself into the Mass Effect universe. I just want a happier end to know I have done some good. I want to see that my actions have made a difference for the better.
Until this has been resolved I feel that I cant move on.

My angle on the indoctrination theory:
First of all, I disliked the endings like everyone else. For the sake of the fans, the future of the series and even their corporate interests, something must be done about it. We were promised that our choices would impact the end, and got the exact opposite.
I have just watched this www.youtube.com/watch video, and here's what I think about it.
The amount of information leading to that conclusion is ludicrous. There is very strong evidence in there, such as nobody noticing the kid, the trees from Shepard's dreams in his surroundings after he gets hit by the beam, and many others. It is almost an undeniable theory, but that would mean that Bioware had this planned all along, carefully introducing all of these subtle elements and details now precieved as evidence that the theory is true.
The only thing that rubs me the wrong way is the presence of the Normandy crash and "Stargazer" cutscenes. If this was all a dream, why would they exist?
It would've been far more logical if we were presented with a cliffhanger. Sure, it might've incited all of this anyway, but it wouldn't present so many continuity issues. If this turns out to be true, it looks like a very dangerous manouver by BW, but an absolutely brilliant one.
Regardless, I have faith in them and hope something is done to fix this soon.

Granted, the interviews released that this ending wouldn't be A,B, or C were wrong....
According to BioWare, we're important. Our input, according to them, is what allowed us relationships with Tali and Garrus in ME2.
So, in that context, we are their guns. I don't see them leaving this ending alone.
