I keep asking myself the same questions. How did this ending make it into the game? It's impossible to imagine a room full of very smart, very talented people watching that and saying "Perfect! Ship it!"circe wrote...
I'm still trying to understand what happened there. Budget issues? Ran out of time? An overambitious attempt to reach that epic and profound ending that subsequently got away from you? Or a clever ruse to extend the life of the franchise via a number of DLCs to be released in the future?
This is the culmination of 7 years of development? It's mind boggling.
Exactly. We know the writers put a great deal of thought into this. But to quote Hackett, "What the hell happened?"
Looking at the game as a whole. There were some parts that were fantastic, such as the scene shooting with Garrus on the Citadel. There were some really botched jobs, like the Tali image, or the fact that the significance of London is never explained.
Thinking through it, I have to believe that EA or other circumstances pushed this game out before it was really finished. There are parts of the story that just feel so rushed, while other parts show the true quality the BioWare team is capable of. We know you have it in you, but the ending really compromised the entire Mass Effect premise that decisions matter.
I'm hoping that those of you at BioWare will say, "You know what, we really botched this. Give us some time, and we'll fix it." There is no shortage of talent in your offices, so we know this is still an option.
On the other hand, unless some type of fix is announced relatively soon, I don't think many will buy DLC for this game. After all, the ending is inescapable. And I will be extremely weary of buying any future BioWare products until they're completely vetted, at which point I can get them through Gamestop.
The bottom line is that a fix to the endings is a win-win. We are satisfied and you maintain a fanbase. No fix is a lose-lose. We remain discouraged, and you lose once enthusiastic fans. Again, I know you'll come through for us.

I know I can't.
Had it all planned, but nothing I could do would change the ending, so what's the point... ?

I loved the games; was looking forward to this one and starting a new full playthrough from ME1. After the ending of ME3 I realized I no longer had any desire to play any of the games.
The ending really was an ending. Final. I'm not even going to bother getting DLC; the game's over and my emotional investment is pretty much cashed out.
I have seen this reaction in many locations outside of bioware social. It is the truly dangerous and precarious position Bioware has stupidly placed itself in.
This population is a LOST population that will likely not be interested in Bioware titles in the future. They also may well have not interest in the movie treatments because...who cares? We know the ending has the same effect on every action previous as the game did. Who wants to play a game or see a movie that basically concludes: There's no point. Nothing you do matters. Nothing you do can fix anything. All you can do is stir the ashes.
Weee. What fun.

• Garrus and Shepard's skeet-shooting "date" (non-romanced) on the Citadel. All the Garrus stuff was awesome, actually, and I'm not a major Garrus fan.
• Vega, Cortez and Traynor, especially Cortez. Great new characters.
• Thane's story arc (non-romanced), a force to be reckoned with even at the brink of death, and the hospital scene was very poignant.
• Kaidan-Shepard romance, and I'm sure I'll like the Liara-Shepard romance too, if it's as good as the Kaidan-Shepard romance. I have two Liaramancer characters to play, here's hoping!
• Priority: Tuchanka. ::goes for Kleenex::
• Legion's story arc and what we learn about the Morning War, and the resolution of the geth-quarian conflict. MAN I hate Han'Gerrel and Daro'Xen.
• Lessus: Ardat-Yakshi Monastery. Banshees are cool and creepy! And I always wanted to see Rila and Falere ever since I saw the Shadow Broker files. And it was good to see Samara again, she's my second favorite character in the whole franchise, after Mordin.
• Seeing Sur'Kesh and Thessia, too bad it was too late to really see Palaven.
• The Vancouver stuff at the beginning, especially the cinematic at the end. The music was especially good in this sequence.
• Speaking of: the music!
• Being proven right that Cerberus isn't worthy of even a little respect. Take that, Cerberus apologists!
• The dream sequences, and the overall more emotional Shepard, that nevertheless still comes across as a hardened soldier and not in any way "emo". Great balancing act. Mark Meer especially deserves props.
• Jack's story arc.
• Miranda's story arc.
• Diana Allers' dress—KIDDING!

But the horrible thing with the ending(s) is that it tainted all the wonderful moments, the joy and happiness i've experienced over the course of the games. I have created 10 different Shepards with as different playthroughs as i've been able to do, and loved the diversity and different choices, and watched the consequences with baited breath. And through it all i've been eager to see how all of this would play into the ending, how different things would turn out.
But after having finished the game sunday i was crushed and i am seriously not sure i can play ME. After having lived, breathed and invested every part of me into the Mass Effect universe i am left with nothing, no hope, no explanations... Everything that made this game unique and amazing is thrown out the window, and every choice you've made is suddenly rendered pointless. At first i thought i must have done something wrong, and actually looked up what you had to do to get the "right" ending, only to realise that, nope that was IT. Three crap choices with no closure, no hope. The end feels more like dooming everyone than saving them from the reapers.
Entertainment though it is, i have been so emotionally invested and immersed myself so thoroughly in the ME world, characters and story that i was a complete trainwreck after having finished ME3.
I am scarred.
I won't be able to look at the ME series the same again, and feel like the entire series has been tainted, because in the end nothing we did mattered.
I would also like to add that i bought the Collector's Edition and... well, right now i wish i hadn't.

The Rannoch-missions (because of Tali), especially the one where you connect yourself with the geth-server (no shooting-stuff = variety)
Thane vs. Kai Leng and Thane dying in the hospital.
The last words and dialogues Shepard can speak with his crew before the final battle (again, especially Tali).
No offense, but I would recommend you to listen to this guy, he sure is right in some ways. Please do something about the current ending(s).
Thanks a lot.
Hold the line.
P.S. I found it kind of sad that the "romance-scene" between Shep and Tali wasn't as intense and "lovely"´as Shep and Liara or Shep and Ashley.
P.P.S. In a way, I still don't believe you are really reading my post, but it would be cool if you would.

My favourite parts were for some reason some of the saddest. Mordin's death moved me to tears, but the writing for that scene was brilliant (I will always think of him when I see a seashell). Hanging out with Garrus on top of the citadel was also a truly memorable scene. Actually, pretty much everything Garrus was amazingly well written. The goodbye broke my heart.
Overall the writing this time round was EPIC. I was completely immersed in the story and the lives of the characters and Shepard actually showing her vulnerable side. It was perfect. Well, up until the end choice

Is ruining your shirt, realistically, that bad?
Also, to those who talk about "brick walls" and "your car was stolen and was used to run over 17 kittens" you're just proving my point that you're being too dramatic over the ending. My intention is not to troll, but to try and make you realize that it doesn't change the quality of the game itself. The ending of Mass Effect 3 didn't cause you to get hurt, or kittens to die, or anything. It just WAS. Trust me, I am emotionally invested in this game as well, I love the series, I have over 200 hours clocked in ME2 and almost 100 in ME1, i cried at many key points in the game (particularly Shepard and Anderson near the end), but the ending, although it came out of left field, was okay. It wasn't some horrible terrible thing, it wasn't fantastic, it just was there.
Lynchmobs are not needed.
But it does change the quality of the game. Mass Effect is a story, told over 3 games. Does the end make the shooting less fun? No. Does it make scanning planets more exciting? No. Does it make the characters less individually loveable? No. But it compromises the STORY. And the STORY is the heart of the experience.
You simply cannot tell me that a sour/confusing/slap dash ending does NOTHING to compromise the value or quality of a story. The ending is the most vital part of any narrative. You can get a lot of things wrong, but if you're going to get one thing right, it better be the ending. That's why people are saying it retroactively destroys the experience...because it does.

As for me, I liked nearly everything about the game.
- Pace was great
- UI worked flawlessly for me
- Area load times were fast and smooth
I noted the details as mentioned by others, little comments about L.I. new encounters to encourage or not your crew/companions
More guns, more fun :-D
Biotic power had punch and looked great
Warp remains my favorite
The assualt rifle also remains my favorite and am VERY glad the sound for it has improved since ME1, which sounded like marbles being dopped on soem fiber board or something.
Ashely looked hot!
Hard to pick out anything else, I liked because I liked it all except... lol
The ending... it kicked my desire to buy the DLCs in the nads.
It also crushed my desire to repplay as well.
It seemed like the ending cutscene was cobbled together from lots of ideas.
It also left me the impression that tere was an attempt to make this a complete dark fantasy but... if I want dark fantasy I've got places to get those. One of the main reasons I like Western RPGs is that they good guy can win and get his/her girl.../../../images/forum/emoticons/angel.png
I was also very disappointed that Kasumi was not a companion or a L.I. even after the tease by Kelly in ME2 that it would be a challenge to get to know her.
One other hunch I was left with...this is not really the end of Shepherd's story, I know in some early interviews that is not what was said but still.
I want a Shepherd gets his/her LI and lives into retirement type ending.
That's my perspective and I've been a BW fan for a while, since before Jade Empire which I still like to play on occasion.

Come on guys, it's blatantly clear how we feel about the endings at this point, and there are tons of other threads for that. He asked what we liked, not for everyone to expound further on what we loathe .
Agree. They already know we hated the ending and they can read about it in all the other 84597593869 threads in this forum
So, answering the question about what I loved: pretty much everything. The story (up until the end) was amazing, and I think all the deaths that happened were not in vain. Also, the goodbyes made me cry
Voice acting was perfect, and the characters were a lot more emotional and...human(yes, I just said aliens were like humans).
And the characters themselves had more expressions on their faces, so they looked less like a robot/doll and more like a person compared to ME1 and 2.
Thank you for an amazing game (note that I didn't like the ending, but I liked the game itself)

Thank you for posting before ME3 has been released to all regions & played. With the pressure I'm sure PR / Marketing / etc. may have wanted to put on you to keep quiet [this is SOP for many companies while product release is going on] it took guts to say anything. Guts is something that I respect.
I won't post spoilers in the non-spoiler forums and will be happy to play ball.
I understand you may not be able to say much for a while but I'm OK with that for now. Waiting a couple of weeks to get some answers seems like a reasonable position to take so I'm OK with that.
BTW: My favorite part of the game [BY FAR] was the Kai Leng ending interrupt. I also loved many other portions of the game ... bold choices to kill off beloved characters in what are IMHO powerful scenes. Mordin, Legion, Tali, Miranda, Thane, etc. are casualties that are easy to get if you're not paying attention and it's worth while to see ALL outcomes.
If you enjoy the game as is then you are really robbing yourself if you don't replay many times to see as much content as humanly possible!!

1. The Garrus romance and everything to do with Garrus- this was one of the points where you guys really won at life. Sniping on the citadel was especially great as was the goodbye scene. That whole relationship was especially poignant.
2. Getting up close and personal with reapers, like on Tuchanka and Rannoch. Defeating them felt great and epic and really showed how hard to take down those bastards were.
3. The Tron-esque interlude with Legion, it was beautiful to look at and very interesting to examine the whole geth/quarian thing from a geth perspective. It brought up many interesting philosophical questions and actually made the ending so much harder to stomach when it just kind of steamrolled all over that.
4. Party Banter! Loved it!! Also the fact that your squadmates hung out at various parts of the citadel and moved around the ship, it made everything feel very real.
5. I suppose I should admit one thing about the ending that I liked, and that was the Anderson and Shepard goodbye. It was beautiful and very touching, they had fought so hard and managed to save everything, except..well the game continued and kind of pooped all over that.
So overall great game bioware! I had a swell time playing a vanguard and I really enjoyed the combat. But for the sake of all that is good in the universe, fix that ending. Not asking for happy frolicking through fields but some sort of closure.
