All I wanted was to build a house with Tali, Instead I killed the entire galaxy. I have read some of the posts but with over 500 pages of complaining with about 25 posts per page, that is over 12,500 notes about the poor ending I have not been able to read everything.
For such a fantastic build up and I mean everything from landing on Eden Prime (ME1) to running running for the portal to the citadel the ending seemed rushed. Regardless of anything everyone dies because if I remember rightly destroying a mass relay effectively nukes the entire solar system (if not why are the Batarians so pissy with you destroying one of their relays?). That would mean everyone's home worlds are gone including earth so what was the point?

The point is: reapers (the starchild) win, Shep looses!

Sorry but after more than a week thinkin' bout it this is my idea... and I don't really understand it!

Just finished my second playthrough, the ending feels even more out of place now.

Red ending: So the kid basically give's me the chance to destroy everything he's been working on for millions of years, so the "chaos" can return...?

Blue ending: Control the reapers and the kid. Yes he clearly says control us. He does not say however you control all synthetics. So even in this case the "chaos" can return.
But that doesn,t seem to bother the kid.
Does he not care, or am i just going to replace him?
It is the only ending where the citadel doesn't blow up.

Green ending: The entire series Shepard speaks of organic life and their right of free will finding or own way...
Now i am going to change everyone into basically more or less the same lifeform, denying all the species rights on keeping their way of life?
Synthesis the final evolution of life? Isn't evolution constant?
Shepard asks if it will bring peace, the kid only says it will break the cycle.

He is clear about the mass relays, no matter what choice you make the energy released from the crucible will destroy them.
Wait, wont that leave the galaxy in another form of chaos.
I mean the fleets must now rely upon FTL?
Starvation in many places affected by the war, how long do they have to wait on rescue.
I mean all advanced species are depending on these relays, far away colonies, supply lines, space stations ...

With these choices the crucible doesn't seem like the best way to fight the reapers anymore.

And the normandy with crew... why do they leave the battle and leave Shepard behind?
There is no way they know what was about to happen.
Even knowing, why leave earth? Most crew members are human.

This ending wrongs the entire trilogy and it's characters.

 Dear Bioware,

I just finished Mass Effect 3 and I have to say this is eighter:

- The best video-game "ending" in the history of video-games ever

or

- The most horrible ending in the history of video-games ever.

I suspect it to be the first one! Waiting in anticipation for the coming information and release of the mass-indoctrination, that you have put the world into!

I was under the impression that FTL travel was based on Mass Effect technology and would also be destroyed by the blast. In the "ending" it looked like the Normandy's engines blew when the blast wave hit rather than the type of damage you would normally expect from a shockwave. I got the feeling that either Sol system was in a LOT of trouble with all of those ships there, or they were going to be building some slowships and some form of stasis so that your allies at least have a hope of seeing their homes again.

Ok, so I didn't read all the posts that have been given about the campaign and especially the ending. It's over 500 pages. But if Bioware is listening, there are a few things I'd like to point out.

First of all, let me say I think this is an amazing, amazing game, story-wise too. Well, about 96-97% of it, at first glance anyway. However, the last half-hour or so, meaning the ending, is weird - weird to the point of absurdity (the Normandy crashing on a tropical planet, Hackett saying on the radio how no one survived yet suddenly casually messaging Shepard on the citadel etc.). The ending itself has to be the weirdest ending I've ever seen in any serious game (and that's with a gaming history of 23 years or something like that). I didn't like it at first, but if the indoctrination theory is true (and it well might be, as there is quite a bit of evidence to support it) it's another story. Still, I stupidly chose the synthesis-option because I somehow thought you have to run into the goddamn ray anyway! My bad I guess.

But I really hope the ending will be different, because if it's left like this, it's a huge disservice to my second-favorite gaming franchise of all time, and a huge disappointment to me as well (though like I said, the ending is weird - so weird that I'd really be surprised if it was supposed to be a final ending). This brings me to another point - if a "final" ending was supposed to be a dlc all along, it would seem quite unethical to me to have the "real" ending released for extra cost to the player (even if the current ending works to some very small extent).

However, I'm sure all of the aforementioned has already been discussed to death here. As something is apparently about to be done about the ending, at least in terms of closure I hope, I'll say something about that too. I really would have liked to see more of the war assets have an impact on the ending. You run around the galaxy fetching these war assets and attaching these exceptional individuals like Grunt, Zaeed Massani, Captain Kirrahe and Jacob Taylor to your cause, but you never really get to see even a short glimpse of them in action when the last push starts. I mean, these characters were part of the journey, and an important part at that. At least I would have liked to see them concretely contribute to the effort. To me, all the "people" I met during the trilogy made up a big part of the experience and now they were treated very, very casually in the very climax of this amazing story. Also, I would have liked to see what happened to your buddies after it was all over. Some of them dead, some alive. What became of them. Kind of like at the end of Baldur's Gate 2 (or even something similar to Fallout endings).

I guess these were my main gripes. Like I said, I hugely enjoyed the game and the parts were some of the guys from the previous ME games were part of were incredibly well done and satisfying. To me, this ME had the largest number of AWESOME moments that just blew my mind. Too bad the ending just left me with a wtf feeling.

My favorite moment was when I realized that I really, truly believed in my first conspiracy theory. It's hard to tell whether the evidence for indoctrination theory is there or not because I simply cannot be objective.

The endings, as they are, murdered the spirit and tone of mass effect that I had gleaned from both the previous installments and me3 up until that point. I would detail exactly why that is, but there have been many others that have expressed my dissatisfaction adequately. Essentially, the game lost hope.

That's why fans like me believe in indoctrination theory! It's hope, and we cling to it for all we're worth. "Without a future, we have no hope. Without hope, we might as well be machines." Maybe the ending with the jungle planet was meant to inspire hope but instead, at least in me, it makes me turn to the hope that the ending is fake.

But IF indoctrination theory is true, as I so fervently believe, I humbly ask that you make the DLC free and not try to make us purchase the last chapter of the story. That would be cruelty of the highest magnitude. I would buy it because I'm so invested, but never again would EA see a penny from me.

Know y'all probably can't listen to every comment, but here's to hoping

I am with you in the Indoctrination theory. There are so many subtle hints that point towards it. In fact the bit where Shepard gets up after being hit by Harbinger's beam immediately threw a red flag. All we can do now is hope I suppose

I'm lost for words really, such an epic trilogy, such great storytelling, so many good people working on such a good game to then come out with this as an ending??? WTF!!!???
I'd like to believe the indoctrination theory as it is the only thing that really makes sense of it all, but after viewing the final hours documentary it sort of puts that idea right to bed. Which is heart-breaking, it honestly is. It means Bioware intended the ending as is. For what reason, we can only speculate. But I can imagine an Orwellian style pig sitting at the helm of EA dictating to Bioware that to make more money on the game they can make the ending HIGHLY controversial, to generate a nice amount of PR. This in itself will get many people to buy the game just to see what the hype is about. Then after everyone's really riled up about it, release some DLC which offers "closure", something which the ending currently is severely lacking in, for one last hit at the cash cow. It's a disgusting business model and I won't tolerate it any more. Boycott EA!!!!

I posted this in the changes board, but it probably belongs here...

First of all, I have played and sincerely loved the Mass Effect series ever since I picked up the second one about two years ago, it prompted me to then buy the first and replay the series keeping me hanging out for the third and I was not disappointed. The series was brilliant the whole way through, the last ten minutes does not spoil that experience but to say that it doesn’t fit is an understatement. I have a few suggestions that could have at least made these three “Strange” endings fit a little better.

Ending A – Controlling the Reapers

Points that don’t make sense

* Why does the relays and the citadel still blow up?
* The Normandy fleeing the scene will never make sense
* How the hell are the reapers going to flee back to dark space without the relays?
* Allies stranded in Sol system

What I personally think could have been done better

Besides from the fact that Shepard has fought this outcome through three games! But anyway I digress. I would have had a different end sequence at least to differ from each scenario. In this ending Shepard has controlled the reapers at his own sacrifice, the destruction of the citadel and the relays is ridiculous in this ending. It’s essentially Shepard uploading his consciousness into the crucible and therefore assuming direct control of the reapers, sending them back to dark space. There is no transfusion of energy through relays but a transmission of signal to the reapers in other solar systems.

So Earth rejoices after reapers depart, lets have some Hackett exhausted sigh of relief over a holographic battleplan or something. Your squad mates that followed you to the beam hiding out behind a building or a bunker whilst they are getting bombarded by harbinger then all of a sudden it stops. One looks up at watches the reaper fly away uttering in total corniness “Shepard”

How about an intergalactic funeral for the damn saviour of the universe, is that too much to ask!!! LI’s could cry, military could salute, hell even the other species could throw a totally emotional salute, you deserve it. Throw a Shepard (and Anderson) statue on the citadel, have the stupid council drowning in their remorse.

Show some Geth helping the Quarians rebuild (if you completed that storyline) or the Krogan travelling back to their systems in a ship with Rachni (that would be an interesting flight)

Your LI could then be seen later holding on to that battle scarred helmet with tears in their eyes.

There is a lot Bioware can do with this ending to show a lot of your past accomplishments come to some kind of resolution.

I guess in summation if there is no happy ending at least make it an emotional one.

Ending B – Destroying the Reapers / Artificial Life

Points that don’t make sense

* If this is an Energy explosion that is meant to be some kind of electromagnetic devastation then let’s face it, it would effect everything, every ship in orbit has suddenly become large coffins, that would inevitably be drawn towards Earths gravitational pull, that’s the ascension, the dreadnaughts the reapers are all going to be crashing on Earth sooner or later.
* Again, the Normandy fleeing
* The destruction of the Citadel / Relays just left the majority of the Shepard allied standing army stranded in the Sol system. Not to mention the newly cured virile Krogan, providing there was females in the Sol system earth is now officially f****d the Krogan will reproduce and take over earth then destroy it. Awesome ending!!!

What I personally think could have been done better

There is two options I could accept here,

First is the one Bioware have gone with, the destruction of the Citadel and Relays this makes sense if this is an electromagnetic explosion, but it does create a situation in the aforementioned points. Meaning this is a horrible ending and the one which we all thought we were fighting for. Nether-the-less if the options on the table then at least show us the consequence of the action.

You could show certain ships falling into the atmosphere, the World going dark, the relays and citadel don’t really need to explode but just go dark, relays stop spinning. Once again you could show your squad mates that were with you on earth fighting harbinger have their electronic weapons jam, they try hitting it before looking up to see the reaper fall to earth.

It’s not necessarily the happiest of endings but it’s realistic. Everyone that was in space (including Shepard) is pretty much doomed, if the pulse destroys all electronics you could say goodbye to the citadels artificial atmosphere, say goodbye to breathing apparatuses.

You could show medieval conditions on Earth, have symbolic graves with your squad mates gathering around an old Polaroid of you stuck on some concrete LI’s sobbing, Joker crying over EDI. The stronger of squad mates looking off in the distance and the crashed citadel on Earth.

In this scenario if you’re bold enough you could have Shepard survive the crash of the citadel on Earth (perhaps there was enough oxygen left over whilst the citadel drifted towards the planet), then have a reassurance with LI saying “we can start over” and Shepard look up in the sky at shrapnel entering the atmosphere and burning up.

Second option in this scenario could be that this pulse destroys AI only (don’t know how but anyway) if this is the case there is once again no need to destroy the Citadel or Relays. You could have the pulse blow through Shepard destroying what AI was inside him when Cerberus put him back together. Shepard could jolt but survive this.

On Earth, once again you could show your squad mates that were with you on earth fighting harbinger then all of a sudden he drops and falls to earth you could again have one look up at the sky and say “Shepard”

In this scenario you could show a reunion of everyone as Shepard is brought back to Earth, a gentle nod of acknowledgement as he pass Wrex, Shepard walks straight to Joker and apologises for EDI.

Then give us some horizon style scenes from Thessia and Palaven, perhaps with Liara and Garrus in a future scene of course, not mixed up with the present of them reuniting on earth.

Maybe a settling down scene with your LI, pictures on the wall of Legion and EDI. Retired N7 helmet in the corner a smile as you LI or yourself (depending on sex) touches their belly and nods to the other… how sweet is it a boy, girl, or a squid!?

Ending C – Synthesis

Points that don’t make sense

* Why does the relays and the citadel blow up?
* The Normandy fleeing the scene will still never make sense
* How the hell are the reapers going to flee back to dark space without the relays?
* Allies stranded in Sol system

What I personally think could have been done better

In all these I have disagreed with the destruction of the Relay’s / Citadel, because lets face it, not only have you ended your series, but ended your universe, it will make it incredibly hard to produce anything in the future under this universe. No Books, No Comics and No more Games. This just seems like an incredibly bad move, even if you are sick of making the games don’t burn the bridges for other artists that have been using your universe… Drew Karpyshyn comes to mind, I noticed he had influence on ME1 and 2 but not 3? Perhaps I am reading that wrong, but anyway I digress again…

So synthesis, I guess I agree with Shepard dying in this scenario but considering its his DNA that has somehow combined a new structure (I still find this absurd by the way) I guess Shepard is more alive then ever, in every single living thing in the universe… HA, you can’t stop me no matter who you are!

You could have LI’s feeling those funny new lines in their temples, down to their hearts and smile (Hell I don’t know I’m struggling with the comprehension of this ending)

You could have some kind of Quarian, Geth confrontation where they hug or something, finally feeling how the other side felt.

You could have Joker and EDI this time in the scene with the baby (bugger now I’m back to copy and pasting endings lol)

Although I don’t think I like the fact that the toaster might get offended if I call it names… I’m kidding, everyone knows toasters have thick skin, they can take it.

Anyway there you have it, my thoughts on the end, I would also prefer at least four other endings, depending on what you have done over the series, Ultimate Paragon Ending, Ultimate Renegade Ending (control the reapers and then attack other species lol). Ending for those who were too slack or unwary of certain circumstances. And a flawed hero ending, something remorseful, like some kind of LI sacrifice, who knows, there was a lot that Bioware could have done just like they did throughout the whole series, which is why I thought the end was weird considering how perfectly they have delivered everything so far.

But as I said I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and I thank Bioware for the memories of most of it. And even thought I was a little hesitant about the multiplayer at first, I find now that I am loving it. I would have played through ME3 again with the 100% readiness if I knew it actually did anything, but as it was I played enough multiplayer to get my 7300 assets up to around 4300 EMS. I have a few ideas about the multiplayer too… but that’s for another time.

What do you think?

The game itself is amazing from beginning to yes the end. I took my time with this one knowing that it could be the last. I just wanted to comment that for me being a fan of the series from the release of the first and playing KOTR and Jade Empire that I am a true fan. Maybe I am bias but every moment of this game is loved by me. The endings might be streamlined but were still touching and fulfilling. Why can't Shepard be a martyr? you want them to change the ending just so he lives? What happened to the journey? When did the outcome of a game ever matter so much? Whether or not Bioware makes any "changes" I am completely satisfied. Comparatively there is nothing out there that comes close to the mass effect series especially 3 ending and all.

your falling into the trap of thinking we all want sheperd to live (though admitidly a few do) this has mainly been put forward by news outlets who havent actually read any of the complaints to make us all look like whiners and is wrong.
what we want is an ending that makes sense, doesnt involve space magic and takes into account the decisions made in 150+ hours of play over the course of the trilogy as we were specificly promised by bioware.
we want closure.

and on a personal note - I want to be able to play the game without needing multiplayer or an apple product to get anywhere meaningful, bioware "selling out" to apple was one of the biggest mistakes they could have made, apple enforces a policy of not allowing content onto other devices for 6+ months after initial release, well done bioware on cutting a large percentage of your fans out of the loop.

You're completely missing the point. I'm not (and I'd hope many people are with me on this) saying Shepard shouldn't die, I feel the only ending true to the trilogy would have him dead in it. The focus of my anger at the ending is that it doesn't make any sense, it barely ties up any loose ends, and leaves far more questions than it gives answers. There's streamlining and then there's what they've done here. It's so streamlined it barely exists anymore. It's hollow, cheap and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I feel Bioware owes us, the consumer, an ending that makes sense.

Even knowing, why leave earth? Most crew members are human.

This ending wrongs the entire trilogy and it's characters.

I completely agree.  Moreover, I give you credit for doing something I just can't bring myself to do, complete another playthrough of the game.  I find the emotional satisfaction sapped away by the prospect of the ending.  I got through the Palaven moon on a second play and I am just not motivated to go through the rollercoaster for that ending again.  I have spent my time with some multiplayer (although I am not the most accomplished shooter--despite having completed ME2 on Insanity).  I have decided to just wait to see what Bioware will do.  If they give us an ending worthy of the character (and I think it should allow Shepard to see his teammates) then I may hop back in with enthusiasm.  If not, I am probably just going to move on.  I played ME2 over and over again to make sure no one was left behind.  The ending, seeing them all there giving you a nod and telling you how they thought you did the right thing telling the Illusive Man to stick it, was terrific.  I bet I had 6 playthroughs or more on that game.  While I thought ME3 was cinematically superior and I liked the combat better, I just can't make myself do it with that ending.  It's just the truth.

I might be sad...but I actually loved being able to finally romance Kaidan with a male shep.

I've started a new playthrough to romance Ash with a female shep....or at least, I would do if I hadn't have been hit by a bug that's transferred all my war assets to my new game making a huge chunk of sidequests non-playable because the game thinks I've already obtained them.

Mind you, I have to say I wouldn't be able to do a playthrough without looking at the ending from the IT point of view...if taken as a face value ending I wouldn't be able to touch ME3, and maybe even 1 or 2, again. It would have gone into the freezer.

Ugh. The ending is so vile.

It's as though I read through all of George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, and then at the end of book 7 it finishes with "... and then a comet came screaming out of the sky, killing everyone. The end."

Agree 100%

After finishing the game a few days ago with the 'perfect ending' as they call it, destroying the reapers / synthetics with shepard barely breathing in the end, I'm thinking about a 2nd playthrough with my other ME2 import... But just don't have the motivation at all knowing it will end the way it does :(. Give us the promised multiple endings Bioware! I think they promised 16 or so? (not that I expect that much) And for gods sake make the endings unique to each other with many Happy endings that the badass shepard deserves!

LOL I completely agree....good comparison.

I was thinking of it along the line of Lord of the Rings.

'So Frodo, you have a choice....you can wear the ring and control it, even though we've spent three books/films telling you this is impossible and warned you of what will happen to you with the corruption of Gollum and Isildur and Boromir and the fact that even Faramir is smart enough to stay the heck away from the thing.....

You can wear the ring and become part corrupted, part controlling of it, but in doing so you will wipe out every race in Middle Earth by making them into super human-elf-orcs and so making every battle that has been fought so far completely and utterly pointles.....

Or, you can destroy the ring, by throwing yourself into the fire with it and all the paths that allow your friends and allies to return home will be blown up, oh, and all living things, villages, cities close to them will be destroyed by the blast.

But don't say we haven't given you a choice, Frodo....It's your *choice* which form of destruction you prefer!'

At which point I would burn the books I'd spent hours and hours reading LOL

Firstly, I would like to congrateulate the Bioware team on the brilliant piece of work, giving a specatacular, if somewhat unpopular, ending to the best space saga EVER. The choices given were really hard, reflecting the situation in which the galaxy and Shepard found ithemselves. I must admit, in the first run through, I did not have the ME2 save, thus being forced to choose between the geth and the quarians. I spent some 5 minutes staring at the computer screen, weighing the options.

In general, ME3 is a brilliant game - the storyline could easily make a basis for a successful movie. The reason for so much negative feedback about the ending coming from the gamers may, in my mind, be caused not by the story itself, but by the shocking realization that this is, after all, the END. No loose threads to hang on to, no plots yet to be uncovered. This was the main minus I found in the game. All the romances, epic choices and acquitances... and now, Shepard is dead, the mass relays destroyed, the Reaper cycle shattered. After completing the game, I sat there and wondered about the ways the ME universe may continue. And I sincerely hope the developers will find a way, as "someone else might have gotten it wrong."

Contrary to the wide public demands, I would not wish for a different ending in itself, but rather what might be called a clarification of the one already in place. I romanced Tali, and would be very happy to see her alongside a handful of geth, toiling - as if the geth could toil - in the combined effort to build a home and looking up at the stars, whispering "Than you, Shepard". I know, cliche and all, but that would give me something to draw satisfaction from, because the ending as it is gives no summary of what happens after the gamer's ultimate choice other than the Normandy speeding through the space and crashlanding on an unknown planet, not elaborating on the krogan situation or whatsoever.

Those harsh words should not, however, cloud the main point I wish to make - I do not want Shepard alive or mysteriously disappearing or whatever. After expecting the sacrifice from millions of other beings, Mordin dying to cure the genophage, Legion - to give the geth a chance of redemption, I see no other possible ending. But exposing the consequences of the choices made throughout the game, or in fact, the series, would be most welcome.

To conclude - a massive GOOD JOB for the whole team working on the game, I hope we will have a chance to exerience yet another adventure in the Mass Effect universe.

You guys at Bioware have done an EPIC trilogy of Mass Effect, thats my favourite game series ever. Touched me deeply the dramatic ending (Shepard must die for save the others), that's a very good and artistic job, great music and scenes. I think it's a nice hit Shepard can not choose an ultimate "everybody saved and everything going to be good" option (except synthesis? I'm not sure.).

But I have some problems after Shepard dies. Not with just the illogical things, but i'm interested in what happens to my friends, love mate, reapers, geths, etc. after solving reaper threat.
We should see some "farewell speech" from one of Shepard's friend on his/her remains, tears in lovemate eyes, happy and saved children and mothers, saluting soldiers.. or if Shepard fails (choosing wrong), then see the consequences. In shorter sentence: a scene about Shepard's done the job well or not. I know this is not a whishlist, but I had to tell this, because I think your epic game should have a much more detailed and constructed end.
(Sorry for my english.)

After paying careful attention to every little detail on my second playthrough, I doubt that the ending is to be taken at face value: there's simply too much "off" about the whole sequence, starting with the way they've designed Shepard's getting hit (or not?) by Harbinger's death ray.

Admittedly, all of the points I might raise could just as well be caused by sloppy writing and programming:
Shepard suddenly lies closer to the beam than before being torn up by the ray? Her gun has unlimited ammo? Anderson appears out of nowhere? The Citadel has a passage that looks like the Shadowbroker's ship? The Catalyst looks just like that weird boy who walked through a locked door in the beginning? All the "good" choices are basically what the Illusive Man aimed for all along? You see IM and Anderson choose the "good" and the "bad" option, respectively? Your friends are suddenly onboard the Normandy, which is headed for some unknown destination rather than fighting alongside the fleet?

Honestly, though, I doubt that the people who created the rest of the game messed things up like that. It's a possibility, of course, but I haven't lost faith yet.
