Then, after a long time trying to find the best way, I chose.
And waited. And waited. Where was that big finale, that climax to end all climaxes?
More waiting. Flashy lights! Then - nothing.
Take "Baldur's Gate 2: The Throne of Bhaal". After an epic adventure and hours of playing and growing to love characters (sound familiar?) the final confrontation is over.
Awesomeness ensues, in form of a long epilouge, describing the fate of all your companions, one by one, in detail.
ME 3 however... nothing. Except flashy lights, and 2 cutscenes which didn't explain anything (to me).
And, sadly, with all these unknowns the replayability is reduced to almost 0.
What a grand shame. BioWare showed us many times that they can end a saga in style.
But for me, they missed the goal by a long shot

Comparing the end to the rest of the game is what gives me hope that your just delaying till everyone worldwide has a chance to buy it before you release the real ending. That ending spoke nothing of the love and effort your team put into the rest of the game. It comes off as what i hope it is, a delaying tactic.

Don't let Mass Effect die like this, please! It was all so wonderful, I could see myself sitting down to play it from the very beginning, game one, to the very end more then once in the future... but not if this is how you choose to leaves things. And if it is how you want to let it end, you have lost me, a die hard bioware fan for years now, as a fan and loyal consumer.

Third, I am concerned about your use of the word 'discussion' in your original post. This is perhaps only me, but the word discussion implies inaction. It implies that we are not bright enough to use our own imaginations so you will lead those of us who don't agree with you can see the light, and see that everything isn't as doom and gloom as it looks.
So I wasn't the only one...

I've posted my own review in the fan reviews thread, and anything else I would have said about the endings has no doubt already been mentioned.
Suffice it to say it's the exemplary epic quality of the rest of the game that makes the endings so terrible. I can't say enough good things about everything up until the last 10 minutes. Sure parts of it felt rushed/shallow and there were 2 or 3 bugged side-quests, but that's to be expected in a game this size with the amount of time you guys had. Everything else... if the endings were fixed ME3 would be in my top 5 games of all time.
From securing peace between the Quarians and Geth, to the momentary horror when I first saw a banshee, to gutting Leng, listening to Javik and just watching mama Thresher Maw take down a freaking reaper; and more. The game is a masterpiece that requires nothing more beyond a proper keystone (the endings). I hope Bioware rises to the challenge, and elevates every part of the game to the level of sheer excellence that I experienced for dozens of hours prior.

I've finished multiples times ME1 and ME2, and was planning to start a new ME3 game as soon as I would have finished it... But now i can't, the ending just ruins the whole game, I see no point in starting a new game. Thinking about how all is doom to end just broke my heart.
I'm a long time Bioware fan (since bg1) , and I really think you achieved your finest piece of work with ME3. The game is a brilliant emotional rollercoaster, the journey is constantly alterning between profound sadness and unreasoned hope, there are tough sacrifices to be made, but there is always hope, a light that makes Sheppard fight against all odds. The best examples are retaking Rannoch and curing genophage missions, those are just plain brilliant.
But man, that ending, is just wrong in so many ways, how could you have messed up so hard?
First, the three endings are the same, the big difference being the citadel beam color... blue, green, red ... seriously!!? And it barely, if not at all, takes into account any choice done during the whole trilogy.
Then why oh why, does every writer think that the only way to get a great and memorable ending is killing the main protagonist? Is it written somewhere on an ancient stone I'm not aware of? In ME3 case it's in fact even worse, Sheppard dies for absolutely no reasons, it is obvious yours writers wanted to kill Sheppard, and then tried to justify it.
I mean his death makes no sense at all: I choose to control the reapers, the computer interface disintegrate me ... what, why? I choose to create a hybrid organic/synthetic; I jump in a pit so the Crucible can use my human DNA... Wasn’t like billions of corpse everywhere that could have been used instead?
The VI kid could even have simply stopped the reaper, since he clearly states that the reaper 'solution' is no longer viable.
The rest is also disappointing and full of plot holes: since the moment Sheppard wakeup at the bottom of the Citadel beam, the game becomes WTF Land. Your companions (potentially including your love interest) disappear, and Sheppard doesn’t give a **** … then you see them teleported back in the Normandy thx to space magic.
Relays are exploding and given what happened in the ME2 Arrival DLC, everything near them should simply be destroyed, which implies a bunch of planets, including Earth, and the whole fleet, including the Normandy.
Sheppard fate is one thing, but what really broke my heart, is what happen to the whole ME universe. Basically the setting we all loved, its history, its location, its races, its technology is gone for good. The actual ending just wipes the license. The universe is nearly back to Stone Age, no more relays, so no more contact between races, Normandy lost on a world where all the characters we learned to love for years now will die alone and forgotten. Garrus and Tali wont ever see their world again, wont ever have any descendants, they will age and die alone in this jungle. It would actually have been kinder to kill them in action. For me it's the most heartbreaking and cruel thing about this ending.
Is this whole mess the result of the script leak that occurred some months ago? Were you forced to rush a new one? Well I don’t know…. But what I know is this one is just bad, terribly bad, people are aware of it, and seeing this thread, you also are.
I was really hoping for a nice and long ending, really though you wouldn’t fall in the tragedy hero cliché. Man I would have loved to see the kid VI shutting down the reapers, the Normandy picking up Sheppard… Later, he would have left the army, and lived the rest of his life with Tali on Rannoch in the house they would have built together... Yeah, that would have been my dream ending, would have it been too much of a happy ending? Maybe. Would it have made less sense than your ending? Hell no.
I don’t know how, but I really hope you will do something to give ME the ending it deserves. But as for now seeing the fate you gave your characters and the stab in your fans’ back I don’t really think you care anymore.
What a waste. The game went from "my favourite game of all time" to "I wont ever be able to play it again", in like ten minutes. Good job, I'm really depressed.

The entire Collector's Base was practically a gift. Seeing my the results of my decisions unfurl in front of me in the form of my squad mates either cheating death or being brutally cut down took years off my life, yet I totally loved it. Even the fight with the Proto-Reaper that seems to draw the most ire from the critics I throughly enjoyed. The Reapers had always been portrayed as aloof and untouchable, now I could finally shoot one in the face and set it on fire. Pure bliss. Then that great, hectic chase after the platform collapse as you and your squaddies outrun the surviving collectors and several big ass explosions perfectly captured the feeling of a truly great action movie. Then getting back to the Normandy by the skin of your teeth, sticking it to the Illusive Man and then getting in your awesome majestic hero pose as you stare down on the oncoming horde of Reapers. Mass Effect 2 was probably the most "played" game I ever bought, I actually had to buy another copy because I actually wore down the center of the ring on Disc 1 from constantly replay.
This an experience I hope to enjoy again with Mass Effect 3 one day.

We appreciate everyone’s feedback about Mass Effect 3 and want you to know that we are listening. Active discussions about the ending are more than welcome here, and the team will be reviewing it for feedback and responding when we can. Please note, we want to give people time to experience the game so while we can’t get into specifics right now, we will be able to address some of your questions once more people have had time to complete the game. In the meantime, we’d like to ask that you keep the non-spoiler areas of our forums and our social media channels spoiler free.
We understand there is a lot of debate on the Mass Effect 3 ending and we will be more than happy to engage in healthy discussions once more people get to experience the game. We are listening to all of your feedback.
In the meantime, let's give appreciation to Commander Shepard. Whether you loved the ME3 ending or didn't or you just have a lot of questions, he/she has given many of us some of the best adventures we have had while playing games. What was your favorite moment?
When I see Bioware give appreciation to Shepard by having an optional ending where he lives and can be reunited with his crew and LI, maybe I'll tell you.
YES!! Me too!!

However, those outsiders keep taking this whole thing out of context. The only reason people are shocked or upset is because we were led to believe the ending would be something it was not.
I am trying to say this the best way as possible without sounding offensive towards Bioware..
Literally every interview and document we read before ME3 was released told us that there would be multiple endings with no questions left behind for the characters in the series. What we got was the complete opposite. It would have never been as bad if what was said and promised beforehand wasn't completely disregarded like that, and if it wasn't disregarded somewhere in the development phase, then it shouldn't have been misleading.
I am not Bioware bashing, but it's very important that information you put out about products doesn't seem misleading to customers.

Wondering when ending DLC is coming.
It better have a enourmous and insane Harbringer boss fight,
That reminds me. Did anyone find the difficulty on Insanity to not live up to the name? I blazed through it. The only part that really gave me trouble was Grissom Academy. On Tuchanka up at the reaper when they throw 6 or so brutes out there I just ran past them. Same thing again at the end with the banshees. I crapped my pants with joy when I heard they were shootingto make it even harder.
Maybe I've just played too much ME2 on Insanity to really feel the impact though.

I can not describe the heartfelt emotions I had as the friendship between Shepard and Garrus played out. Or the friendship of Liara and Shepard. These 2 felt as close to me as my real life comabt buddies I served with in Iraq. It was some of the best writing and the most wonderful experience I've ever encountered in a video game.
The addition of all the former squad mates was a masterpiece. Even though we weren't able to use them actively, just being able to 'catch up' with them and have them join the war effort was writing at its best. It felt like reuniting with old friends to once again face down the impossible.
The combat was smooth and crisp. The Kinect feature was one of the most responsive things I've ever seen. It reminded me of my days leading infantry man in Iraq being able to shout out orders and get things done! You guys integrated it perfectly and I can't see playing the game without it.
The love interest. In ME1 I romanced Ashley, in ME2 I went with Tali. The emotion that was present, even between Ash and Tali was so real it was incredible. When Ashley stated that Tali was 'like a sister to her' it warmed my heart. It was a true statement of how close the crew had grown and showed the amazing connection BW has with human emotions.
The progression of the story was top notch. It consistently felt like running against time and a conflict we had to win. The lead up to the last battle reminded me of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars except I was PERSONALLY invovled and going to be a part of that battle.
Which leads me to the end. I will say this, I didn't expect Shepard to live, but I hoped for it. Hope has always been the defining factor of this series. Hope that we can succeed together. Hope that we can learn to live together. Hope that no matter what we face, we can defeat it by putting aside differences and working together. The ending destroyed this. Instead of the climactic battle we'd been building up to, we get a ghost child cyber jesus who tells us that all our work was for nothing and here are the ways we can screw up the galaxy. It was totally out of character for Shepard to accept these endings as well. He has always been the driving force behind the 'hope' theory. He coulb be neck deep in collector bodies with 50,000 more still coming at him and he would never stop fighting. Yet ghost child cyber jesus makes him roll over faster then it takes a fat kid to eat a piece of cake.
Lack of closure. The death of a hero is a sad thing, but it's the way his life and actions affect the world around him which makes his death feel worthwhile. With Shepard checking out like this, all his sacrifices have been negated. Everything he suffered through, all the friends he watched pass, all this was for nothing. That's what was depressing. By the end of the game Shepard left the galaxy in a worse state then the Reapers would have.
Breaking of established canon. This is the biggest one. Plot holes. Joker flying thru the mass relay. Your squad mates getting off the Normandy when they should be down on Earth fighting beside you. The mass relays going boom and NOT wiping star systems off the map like they did in the Overlord DLC. All this goes against everything that had alrdy been established in the ME universe. This wasn't a twist to the ending. This was like letting a 4 year old write it. It would be like having Shakespeares Romeo and Juilet end with them time traviling to 1980's Miami and teaming up with Scarface. It made no sense and I can't imagine how anyone thought this was good writing.
Overall, ME3 was an incredible game. It told an amazing story, but the last 10 minutes is one of the most important. You can either make or break a story in this part. Why do you think the Return of the King movie had another 20 minutes of 'bunnies and rainbows' at the end? It was to add closure to the characters we had followed on this epic journey. I have never been more pleased to be a gamer then while I was playing the ME series. After the final cut scene ended, I literally wished I had never picked up the series. The pain I felt at the ending made me want to forget the journey we had gone on, because it made it all pointless.

As for the ending.....recut everything past Anderson dieing. Get rid of the Reaper God Child, that is just not good. Get rid of synthesis ending, because last I checked Mass Effect isn't about Magic and that is what it would take to blend at the DNA level with an energy pulse synthetic and organic. More importantly it doesn't fix the really lame problem the RGC says exists and the problem has since been proven false. Don't destroy the Geth unless you are also going to destroy all advanced tech as well, since Geth are Software and an energy pulse should NOT be able to pick out their programming but instead would just nuke their hardware which should also mean any advanced hardware as well such as Quarian exo-suits. Don't destroy the Relays except if you have very low Military Score. Give all the endings by the 3600 mark of readiness because that would allow a very complete single player run to get the best endings not prevent them because they didn't play MP, like me who got 3742(iirc) on my one play and that was a 100% complete run.
As far as destroying the Relays go, Earth is a bombed out husk(by story given) loss or relays means no trade, and no help from colonies or other less hard hit races. It means 18-22 years for the other races to get back home if they can run FTL have places to discharge drive cores, but more importantly enough supplies for that kind of haul. It means the loss of the Galactic community that made the ME universe so special as well as 99% of all Trans-Galatic communication since that was also handled by the Relays.
Of the Races above Earth with a loss of Relays, Geth and Quarian are the two most likely to be able to survive depending on whether or not the Quarian have their Live Ships there. Turians would likely starve before they got home, unless they decide to follow the Quarians and mooch off the Live Ships and then take them to their home after the Quarians get home making them have around a 30-40 year time to get home. Krogan would either take over the Earth or probably starve on the way home. Salarian would either die of old age before getting home or starve trying.
Planets cut off from Galactic trade and resources. How many core worlds have a good supply of basic minerals to rebuild their worlds and how many also have enough food and Tech production to maintain their current machinery?? Most likely the core worlds either run out of food or tech due to loss of machinery or off planet food supply. Heck, look at any modern city or country, and tell me how many could easily recover from a major catastrophe that takes out 50+% of their infrastructure and totally isolates them from other countries for 40-60 year cycles. You order a waterpump for your car, it has to come from Japan and it will take 40 years to get it???? What shape will you be in if you really need your car?? So please don't destroy the relays, for this reason if not for the simple reason that they made your universe so special and different from all the other Sci-Fi ones that use FTL as well.
Let us know what happens after the ending, whether it be by text or cutscenes but let us know how you see it all coming about. Don't leave more questions than you answer, and don't pull a Gilligans Island on our squad, let them die if you want with a low readiness but don't just leave them in limbo.

So, just finished my first playthrough and I have to say:
I don't understand this fuzz about the endings at all.
Chose the "Destroy the Reapers" ending and it wasn't underwhelming in the least. I was quite content with it in fact. I liked it.
Now, I don't know how the other endings are and will find out sooner or later, but so far, I think the whole issue seems overblown (unless of course that one ending is miles ahead in terms of quality and the other two are truly garbage, as I said, don't know).
Perhaps reading over some of the 80 pages here and the 1345ish pages on the other discussion area will elucidate the issues with the ending, speaking as someone else who chose the "Destroy the Reapers" ending and is still unsatisfied with the lack of an ending. I don't mean that sarcastically, btw, and I realize it might come off that way. It's more that I can't sum up everyone's issues but they do a great job of showing just why they aren't satisfied with the endings and it will probably help you to understand much faster than another playthrough, even if you only concentrate on this thread, you'll find that, for the most part, people are very detailed on why they dislike the endings.
