Actually it's in an unofficial "comic" series that I just found and am reading.  I was actually joking there, but really when I read it, it made sense to me-couldn't see how this was missed or why it was something that hadn't been discussed.  I can't recall any discussions on it anyway.  It's just that Synthesis is explained as the fusing of synthetics and organics to create a new DNA, but what with?  Organics have DNA, but synthetics?

But I have found something that contradicts this thought...

Hmm, what a truly intellectual thought.  Inspired, truly Thanatos.  You are a poet at heart.  Please don't spread it around though, k?

Thanks again for being a shining definition!

---  Back from work again.  Just read most of what was posted above.

To Holger:  Mm hm, I see what you're getting.  If the Catalyst really is just a mechanical being, then the introduction of new hardware COULD change his options.  I mean, let's say that my girlfriend's getting attacked by a bear.  My only option of saving her may be for me to jump that bear, distract it, and die in the process.  Giving me a GUN opens up WAY more options.
Supposing that Starboy did the best he could by making the reapers, to prevent the COMPLETE destruction of organic life by only taking out the more advanced ones, he might not be totally evil, just kinda screwed up in the head.
Then, given more technology, he would have more options.

But I have to ask a question here: Reaper Tech is more advanced than any other technology in the game universe.  Couldn't the Starboy have been researching exciting new ways to save organics?  Couldn't he just dominate all life without harvesting or ending it, and prohibit all research into synthetics?  Couldn't he just kill Synthetics when they find them?
Remember Mass Effect 1: When Saren set up shop with Soverign, they found the Geth and tried to dominate them.  They only got the allegiance of the Heretic Geth, but those Geth worshipped Soverign like a god.  Soverign could have had the Heretic Geth destroy the other Geth.  He could have had the Heretic Geth commit suicide.  Instead, he ordered them to attack Organic Life, to begin the reaper invasion.  If there was ever an opportunity for the Starboy to defend Organic Life from destruction at the hands of Synthetics, it was then.

Even still, that can be attributed to the Starboy being badly programmed, and not understanding the nature of protecting someone.  And that can change when given the Crucible.

---  But now let me start a conversation about the nature of the Crucible.  We've heard that it's THEORETICALLY a weapon.  Liara, Hackett, Javik and the Prothean VI have all said that it was a weapon; or at least they all said that they THINK it's a weapon.  Hackett is getting his information from the Alliance's prothean expert: that's Liara.  Liara is getting her information from the Prothean Database on Mars.  Javik is a Prothean; he heard of the Crucible through rumors.  The Prothean VI is by far the most reliable source of information on the Crucible...

And the Prothean VI, named Vendetta, says, word for word:

"The crucible is not of Prothean Design.  It is the work of countless galactic cycles, stretching back millions of years.  Each cycle adds to it.  Each improves upon it.  Thus far, none have successfully defeated the reapers with it."

That's all of Thessia.  All we learn there is that the Crucible was first thought up millions (plural) of years ago.  If the reapers come back every 50 thousand years, that means that if there were only 2 million (again plural) years between the concept and the present, there's been 200 galactic Reapings.  Wow.  That's easily into some serious digits of deaths.  Later, on the Cerberus Base, Vendetta says more.

Vendetta says:
(When Shepard says:  "So the Crucible and Citadel together can stop the reapers?")
"That is correct."
Shepard:  "But the Citadel was built by the reapers."
Vendetta:  "The plans for the Crucible were passed down to us from the previous cycle, and countless cycles before that.  At some point - it is difficult to pinpoint when - the crucible plans were adapted to incorporate the use of the catalyst.  PRESUMABLY, the crucible was not sufficiently powerful to defeat the reapers."

He never actually states what the Crucible does... and see the word I put in bold face type there?  PRESUMABLY.

Vendetta, the Prothean AI, has to PRESUME what the power level of the crucible is.  Not only does he not state what it does, he seems to not even know how powerful it is.

We never recieve any definite information on what the Crucible is.  People tell us that they THINK it's a weapon.  What I remember most about talking with Hackett about is is that he didn't know what it did.  He said, in a nutshell...

"It's got a crapton of power, but damned if I know how it uses it all."

So sure, there's no PROOF that the Crucible is Reaper Tech... but it's millions of years old.  The only other things in the game universe that are that old are pieces of Reaper Tech.  In every cycle, the reapers SCOUR the galaxy, taking out information from previous cycles.  They leave just enough pieces of info about the previous cycle to make the new cycle think that the previous one built the citadel and the relays.  Because they use those Goodies from the Past as a horrible blood soaked nightmare TRAP.

MILLIONS of years, Vendetta said.  Even at just two million, that's 200 cycles.  Tell you what:  Let me go to your house and hide a couply tiny little notes, little slivers of paper with size 3 type, that say "We can use the Catalyst to destroy the Reapers!"  Then you get to clean your house.  TWO HUNDRED TIMES.  Then a stranger, who doesn't even know that there ARE reapers, or that I hid ANYTHING AT ALL has to find at least one of them and read it before I show up and grab him from behind and scream, "YOU LOSE!"  All it would take would be the Reapers finding out that any of those 200 cycles were trying to build a crucible and they'd be DAMN sure to wipe it out forever.

So Crucible Tech is the only thing NEARLY as old as Reaper Tech, it's startlingly easy to pass it down to following cycles, and when it gets built it's not immediately destroyed.  PROOF that the reapers made it?  Nope.

But it does make me suspicious as all hell.

@BlueStorm83,

Great post. It's just that point that if something could possibly be negative (the kid is lying or the crucible plans could have been a reaper design) then they can't be trusted. Shepard couldn't take that chance. You said it way better than I could.

Hey Thanatos. First and last time I'll waste my time and reply to you.

You're hilarious. You're also a child. There are better hobbies you could have. Kinda sad that you can't have fun unless you're frustrating people who are really just conversing with each other, but whatever.

So sure, go nuts, reduce anything we say to two laughably simple and moronic statements. Call us all whatever you'd like. Have fun, bro.

<_< again the catalyst isnt the good guy the enemy that has been destroying advanced organics for generations and then saying their going to save us from advanced synthetics but then use the geth to kill us or fight us with their reaper code after nearly destroying the galaxy and do this a thousand times over do you really think the reapers are just gonna sit down and drink milk and cookies with us I hardly doubt so

In A situation where the enemy that your fighting or brought all your forces to beat it makes no sense to automaticlly give into said enemy with circular logic that can be torn apart and then forced into 3 choices that either sound suicidal and ends up traping all your forces or commiting mass genocide to races like the geth and the quarians

Or turing everybody into half machines or half organic hybrids against their will destroying individuality evolution to affect real change to destroy the whole essence of bringing different people together to accomplish a goal

And No one has ever been able to control the reapers so it makes no sense why it would be able to work now when the illusive man and saren both failed to do so and how is shepard controlling the reapers if his or her body is destroyed how in hells name are the reapers being controlled and in any of the endings where the main villian lives what makes you think they won't try to harvest or commit mass genocide again it just

*Deep breath* dear god I just oooooih *Facepalms

Maybe from now on on every post I make I shall have this picture accompanie it

Thought this was kinda cool

Yeah a sacrifical ending is fine if you end up saving the people you sacrifice for but giving into the enemy and then having the enemy pick what you should or force you into 3 terrible choices that personally as player and as shepard would probably never do I'm sorry

I'd rather fight the reapers to the end and depending on how high ems is how bad we lose or how good we win with keeping the relays intact so all the forces can go home and have loyal squad stay with us and the fleets

And why Can't mass effect 3 have a good ending or at least a victory ending mass effect 1 had one mass effect 2 had one 99% of mass effect 3 despite the noble and sad sacrifices had heroic and well done moments so why in the ending where everything is suppose to make sense where we are suppose to be reaching a decent conclusion does everything lose cohesion losing gallons of blood or not I wouldn't give in or accept the cataylst without questioning my own sanity because he created the reapers he is using the reapers to destroy organics for aeons on end and is still using the reapers to destroy my forces as we are having this very conversation with the catalyst

And ultimately why would I Trapt my own forces or let the enemy that has been destroying life for thousand of years or is destroying us during most of the final game why in hells name would I let them live so that they can potentially kill us all over again I just sweet christmas U_u

At the end of the day a defeat is a defeat I wish our choices would've mattered I wish we could've really beaten the reapers espically under our own steam and not their creators wishes

Yea thanatos loves playing games to lose I bet he plays call of duty all the time online so he can get his ass destroyed or so that no matter what he does he will always lose yup he loves it more then anything ^_^

I think we all understand why the ending suffices for you-you wouldn't know logic if it bit you in your assets.

You apparently have little grasp on the fine art of reading and writing which is so sad because it renders you unable to share your pearls of wisdom with us.  And you are destined to keep spouting the same tripe again and again.  We discuss a great many things, so it is sad you can't contribute-they do have night classes, you know.  And for the record no one is being told they can't speak again-no one even ever tells you that and you define hypocrisy and acrimony.

Scintillating as usual.  Since the former concepts are foreign to you and the latter describe you, I take that as high praise.  Thank you so much buddy.  I just love you.  P.S.  don't let anyone know about "us".

He's not worth the effort.  He must not get much attention in real life.  He said he's 40, but acts worse than my nephews did at 5.  Time is better spent on things that matter.  He doesn't.  Sad little man.
