...

Why am I in really small minority in liking Kai Leng as a villain, who is BTW a pretty good villain.

Not great, but still good.

Kai-Leng was an awesome character in Retribution.
I still boycott Deception so i don't know whats going on with him in this novel, beside the cereal jokes.

But the whole "Phantom Initiativ" don't fit in the Mass Effect Universe. Looks like they needed a pseudo-cool antagonist. So they transformed Kai-Leng into a bad-ass, cereal-stealing, cyborg ninja with a katana (hey raiden!) which blade breaks if you hit it to hard with your fist.

Yeah, this is what the kids love to see nowadays... <sarcamn> And this omni-blade is also really cool.</sarcamn>

Agree with the OP, Kai Leng didnt fit ME at all.

Also, the boss fight against him was probably the f*cking worst fight in the entire trilogy. It was to the gameplay what the ending was to the story, imo.

I liked Kai Leng as a villain. He certainly worked better than Harbinger did in Mass Effect 2, where you only encountered him in the form of possessed Collectors, who were easily killed mid-taunt.

They probably should toned down the 'ninja' a bit with the character, but other than that I thought he was a great villain. By the time I got to that final confrontation with him I had a visceral hatred for the character, and cheered when Shepard finally finished him off with, "This is for Thane and Miranda you son-of-a-b-tch!" So for me at least, Bioware did it's job.

Kai Leng was okay, but his was a character that would've been a good fit for ME2. TIM could've recruited him for the suicide mission, so it could show the animosity between him and Shepard. Giving Leng more backstory would've made his character even better than what it was. The second game was a good entry to build up a decent feud with someone.

His voice actor was good, but otherwise he felt like some wanna-be ninja from a bad 80s movie.

I think they missed out on a potentially decent reoccurring villain (if they decided to make any spin-offs) had they just let him disappear. I could see him carrying on where TIM left off. He didn't have much face time to develop much of anything in ME3.

I didn't hate his character, quite the contrary, I rather liked that they were trying to tie in the novels. I just think they missed the oppertunity to start working on the next big villain.
