Turning in Herbs vs. Runes

You get XP for turning in runes (for the mages), herbs (for the elves), gems (for the dwarves), cash (for the humans).
I tried turning in a Master Dweomer rune, and got 10 XP (same as for any rune, it does not seem to look at the value. Perhaps a bug.)
Then I reloaded and sold the rune for 1/45/00. I took that cash and went to the Dalish camp and bought 241 elfroot at 60 pence each. Sure enough, contributing them got me 2400 XP (acutally 2600, since I had some extra when I started the experiment and you "turn in all").
I don't have dwarves and humans yet, but I'm suspicious that it works similarly.
Anyone know of a downside to only turning in supplies for the elves? It looks like I get vastly better XP that way.

Well if they improve the archers for each herb, your army is gonna be made out of 50 Vasily Zaytsev clones lol.



Anyway didnt know it was only numbers and not quality, thanks for telling this :)

I think this officially counts as an exploit.

My next experiment was to use 12 soverigns, the price of one Tome of the Mortal Vessel, and convert it to elfroot and donate it. That buys 2000 elfroot. It took me from level 15 (2096/9000 XP) to level 17 (3396/10000 XP).

Would I rather have two full character levels than a couple of attribute points? What's the level cap in this game? Maybe it would be better to sell everything and go into battle in my skivvies as a level 40 mage! Do I unlock an achievement for getting every talent in the game in one playthrough?

Level 25 is the cap. Plus enemies partially scale to your level.

You only gain a total of 2-3 extra levels out of this loop. Doesn't impact anything much unless you try to raise your level from 7 to 20 at the very start of the game.

I don't see it as an exploit, you use money to gain XP and improve your allies (I never use them anyways, so basically the improvement doesn't really provide me that effect). I would rather have two full character levels and a couple of bonus attribute points. The level cap is Lv.25. I keep around the cooler stuff, sell the rest and since Lv.25 is the cap, plus enemies (mostly) scale to your level, it'd be wise to have some equipment. You can't without cheating gain every talent in the game in a single playthrough. Well basically you can't at all, since you can't play as a Mage/Warrior/Rogue all at once.

To add to your XP gaining world domination plan, I can give you a tip on how to make profit by crafting (would you call that an exploit? I don't): Later in the game, you can buy a Potent Lyrium Potion recipe at the mage shop in Denerim (requires maxed (I think) Herbalism, so get that on say, Morrigan). Now you'll also need a little gold to kickstart yourself, but if you got around 300G, you're more than good to go. Try clearing out some inventory space to save yourself some time, then travel to Circle Tower. Buy Lyrium Dust from the Quartermaster until you have 6 slots left in your inventory. Travel to Denerim Market and go into the bar, then buy the remaining materials needed to make Potent Lyrium Potions; flasks and agents. Craft and sell the Potent Lyrium Potions to the bar owner (or another vendor if you want), and for each potion, you earn a profit of 20 or so silver. When you deal with several stacks of 99, you quickly start racking up the gold, since you basically gain 20G per stack of 99. Rinse repeat until you are bored of it (I got bored at 1100G). Use that money to buy Elfroots and/or various other things you might want.

The downside of reaching the level cap, would for me, be that DLC I want to play with that character in the future (until they raise the cap) will feel less rewarding. Sure, I want DLC mainly for entertainment and story, but it is also nice to feel a sense of achievement from gaining a level and feeling stronger with more abilities at your disposal. I do hope they will raise the bar eventually.

May have to do a game playing through with everything at level 25 as soon as possible. With the scaling, it seems like it would be rather fun.

So THAT's the secret for the potent lyrium exploit - the concentrator agent, distillation agent, and flasks are cheap at the bartender. Buying them at camp is a net loss. I wondered how people got this to work.



Using the bartender I went from 105/8/46 to 94/77/46 after buying materials for 10 potions, to 107/27/46 after selling them.



At least I know where my next bundle of elfroot is coming from...

I don't see why one would call crafting an exploit. In 'most' games, crafting is there to provide you with means to make money as well, hehe. I don't see why DA:O has to be any different :-) --You can also profit from other recipes too, but this one is easy to do and nets an ok profit when you do the travel pattern like I tried to describe above (Buy plenty at Circle Tower, then go stand and sell in the bar as you craft, have an ale while you're at it!).
