I realize I'm a bit of a newcomer to these forums, but we all have to start somewhere, right?
Bottom line up front: I get where they (the ME3 developers) are coming from, but I don't feel the execution of their intent was successful.
I haven't read all the comments in this thread beyond maybe page 3, but I think the general tone of utter outrage carries on right through. I tend to agree, although to a degree I empathize just a tiny little bit with the developers. I'm a photography student, and have on more than one occasion been crushed by critiques of my work. I was in love with my own project, but my audience (teachers and/or peers) really wasn't feeling it. One of my teachers phrased it very succintly: "Sometimes you just have to kill your baby."
I think that in their own minds, this was a phenomenal ending, and that it was a way to wrap up the trilogy but allow for speculation for other, related stories in the future (I don't have the link handy, but I do remember reading somewhere that the developers are considering pursuing more Mass Effect games in the future, although perhaps not Shepard-centered). It was not well received by their intended audience.. maybe it is a matter of we just don't "get it" (a la Evangelion) - but that doesn't change the fact that ending leaves the player with more of a sense of despair than one of completion. I understand not filling us in on ALL the details (allowing room for speculation), but I think they took that a little too far.
Anyhoo, apologies for the book, but I felt my take on it needed a little more explanation.
The problem most of us (being presumptious at the moment) have is that we loved the entire franchise up until the last 90+ % of Mass Effect 3. Questions were being answered, origins were being explained then We get this ending out of nowhere. What's worse is that the ending feels completely out of place.
To borrow your metaphor, we loved the baby and we can't figure out why Bioware killed it.
This is the "spoilers alowed" forum, right? My problem is that as I see it, Bioware gives us three endings which as far as I can see effectively destroy the galaxy - the Mass Effect universe. If you assume the destruction of the mass relays has the same effect that the destruction of one had in the Mass Effect 2 DLC "Arrival", then all life in the galaxy is destroyed. If you assume for sheer optimism that the god-child VI that wasn't clever enough to consider that maybe organics wiped out in each cycle may find ways to pass information on to the next cycle to eventually overcome the reapers somehow has a way to contain or control the released energy of a demolished mass relay and prevent it from wiping out star systems, the citadel and mass relays are still destroyed. Interstelar travel is still not possible. Not to mention that apparently Bioware takes a neurolizer (sp?) to the galaxy and wipes all beings of the knowedge of life on other planets. The Mass Effect universe is effectively dead at the end of Mass Effect 3, there is nowhere to go.

The whole line that this is a high brow artistic ending blows my mind.
It's a copied ending from not just one but several sources (matrix, DE etc). It shows that your writers and directors actually WROTE THAT down as a note about the ending.
When you ask the fans to think about the ending more; that it has deep and wide meanings - the fans did, they thought it was bad.
You can hide behind the concept that "waaaah, the fans just aren't smart enough to get it" if you like; but I can almost guarantee that that line isn't going to work for a prolonged period of time. I think the fans got it just fine - you ran out of ideas and time and didn't actually know what you were going to do until the end yourselves.
The documentary says as much: up until November you were still throwing ending concepts around and were scrambling to finish up the game in a satisfactory fashion. There's not much high philosophical thinking that is going to come out of a rushed product, so yeah I'll pass on trying to headcannon the ending some more thank you.
Yeah and if I am not smart enough to "get" your games Bioware then I will not be buying them in future and will stick to "dumbed down" games like Zelda. In that case you have no right to complain when your proffits go down and EA start slashing budgets and firing people to save money.

Dear Bioware.
I really love the Mass Effect saga. I spend hundreds of hours playing as MaleShep, FemShep, I projected my own faces, try to make them as ugly as I can. But I enjoyed it. The story was awesome, I really felt attached to the characters and my Love Interests [Ashley FTW! ;-P]. The Game was fun. I’m just a kid, so for my collectors edition for ME3 and here sorry for bad language – I worked my ass so much for the game, and some bioware points for DLC’s. But I was reminding myself that it will be worth it. And it was. The game was awesome – gameplay improvement was very much seen, the game became very dynamical, conversations with friends/LI also a big step forward. And then… the ending. At first I did not exactly processed in my mind what happened, so I played it again. And I saw all he plot holes, all “space magic trick’s”, all the unsaid but obvious to seen things. And I was not raged like someone. This maybe seem idiotic to somebody but I was actually pretty sure that there will be a DLC that will explain everything, hell I was even eager to pay for it! Why – because in my opinion this story deserved a ending that the game deserved.
And then, yesterday has come.
What I saw in that app – it was like slap in the face. Every hope for a good ending was crushed. I was furious – because you left the game very unfinished with no intentions to improved and you are thinking that what you’ve done was good.
Mr. Hudson – in one of the interviews you’ve said that you want the game be unforgettable. This is a pretty good idea and now I am pretty sure that the game will be – but not in a good way. But what I am trying to say is [well in my opinion] the fact that this epic saga is going to end is a pretty unforgettable fact itself. And on this thing you’ve should build on whole game. Because this will dictate, how future people will think of the saga, how you will be remembered. Personally the end of Mass Effect was like the end of Harry Potter Saga – an end of an era, the end of some part of my life. Hell I was even prepared for some crying because of the end.
The next thing – the whole “Lots of Speculations”. First of all, this is not some normal game, when the story guides you and tells you what will be, what the future can hold. This is Mass Effect – the game when you are deciding of your fate, and for that you should receive award – closure. Personally I wanted to see what was after – were Ashley was mourning my Shepard’s death, by reading poetry by his grave, or living with my Shepard happily ever after and having three very cute children. And besides – fan’s can speculating how long and much they want, but there is no more solid thing to the story, than the producer’s vision, because fans are basing all there opinions on what producer’s think on that, or that topic. And you’ve robbed us from that. But even if we’d speculate on what
we have – [of course not including whole indoctrination theory] the conclusion is obvious – Shepard dies like I hero [which is acceptable], all the race’s are held in Sol relay [so not unacceptable], and Normandy is on God-knows-where planet, cut from everybody else, with no mass relays to come home, and no possibility for my LI to mourn my Shepard – very happy conclusion to an epic saga, right? ;-).
“You don't need to know the answers to the mass effect universe. So we intentionally left those out" – please, don’t let me start on that. The ending left more questions than answers, and we do not have and will not have an explanations? Are kidding me?
And you know what? There is no sense on even wanting to buy any DLC [I was so hyped for the obvious retaking Omega with Aria], because no matter what we will do, it won’t make a difference, because no matter what – the ending sucked. I am really glad that there still is multiplayer…
I am sad. Just sad, because the story deserved better. And I still have a little spark of hope that somebody in Bioware will wake up and see what the hell is going on.
Sincerely
Filip from
Poland.

After following Bioware buying every game unquestioned since BG2 i'm just shocked they could think it is an acceptable way to end thier biggest game to date. I thought they were much much better than this!

Be sure to check the date. Turn your speakers way down.
So not only did they just randomly grab a picture off the internet for Tali, they also just stole someone else's screenshot to use as the final part of their ending??
Great artistic integrity there, Bioware.

I'd suggest you write that down on a piece of paper and send them a traditional letter. Sure, it will take some time until it arrives but the impact will likely be larger than that of a forum entry. They should read that.

Funny, I was thinking along those same lines. Cept I was thinking that Frodo and Sam would catch a crossbow bolt to the head at the most unexpected moment and then cut to "The End".

I love the whole "its artistic" crap, no the ending isnt artistic, it was just hard to come up with a good one and you copped out with "LOTS OF SPECULATION!". If this was the apprentice somebody would be fired.
One can not call something artistic if the "art" in question does not stay true to itself. The ending of Mass Effect 3 did not stay true to the game and certainly not the trilogy as a whole. Had they stayed true and given us multiple endigs with different outcomes, closure and made our decisions matter, then I might have been fine calling this game series "art".
I have yet to give that title to any game. Maybe if they fix it I will change my mind...as long as it's good. The ID theory being true would be a nice start.

Well said sir. In my opinion, calling this ending "art" that we simpletons just don't get is like calling a child's refrigerator doodle a Monet.
