They broke a simple rule in Creative Writing 101. When finishing a story, simply finish it.
Instead of going with the correct ending or the right ending, they wanted to be flashy. That's a case of the writer bending the story to his/her will instead of simply allowing it to work itself out.
This was talked about in the "writers' opinions" thread.
"Simply finish the story." Or, "Let the story finish itself."
Stephen King once said, "It is the story, not he who tels it." [paraphrasing]
Yeah, I'm a writer myself, and finishing the story is more important than what they thought was a great idea. <_<
Exactly ... I am ameteur and I know this.... I just can't
really right know my brain is having trouble grasping that they though this was good.
They also broke over half the rules in the "reader-writer contract."
- Don't treat the reader like they're stupid.
- Don't change the rules of your universe once they're established.
- Don't change your style of storytelling after the first page (scene, chapter, conversation, etc).
- Don't trick the reader by foreshadowing one thing and revealing another.
- Don't leave any foreshadowing unfulfilled.
And, of course, provide a good ending to allow for an emotionally satisfying experience.
"And what qualifies as a great
ending? The release of tension that come from the sense of rightness,
the feeling that this is the way things should—had—to be, whether
bittersweet or happily-ever-after."
They fluffed on all of that.
