Q: How was BioWare involved in the creation of this story?
A: A story like The Final Hours is only possible with an incredible amount of support, coooperation and trust from the game development team. Casey and I first started talking about a Final Hours story around Mass Effect in the Spring of 2011 and I began work on it during the summer of last year. Even though he was in the thick of finishing the game, he was generous with his time, as were many other team members at BioWare. They sat down for interviews, photos, and answered countless questions over e-mail.

Well, they say they listen to us. Hopefully $$ wins out as no ones going to be recommending this game and DLC sales will be far from expectations.
It's going to be a joke for many years this ending. Duke Nukem won't be the game ripped apart over and over. Move over Duke.........

I just watched the deleted scene where Liara and Garrus dies, and just wow.. Obviously, the scene needed polish but that was one of the most important things the ending was lacking. To see such events happening based on your ems/whatever.

I will never understand why Bioware decided to cut them out alltogether.

Bioware developers: The ending is out of place and will enrage many fans if we go through with it.

*Possible Renegade interrupt: You're fired!*

Casey's options:
-We should try something new with the franchise to be artistic and make a point.
-We will see when the game comes out.
-SHUT UP! They will love anything we make because we are Bioware!

Though I feel we have the right to ask the devs to deliver on their promises for the ending, (closure, variety, logic, choices matters etc...) we can't start criticizing every artistic decisions they've made simply because we don't like them.

Would I have liked to fight TIM in a massive, epic battle on the Citadel? Sure. Is the current version of the confrontation a bit anti-climactic? Yes. But it also delivers a proper conclusion to the character/ Cerberus plotline and thus BW fulfills its contract, as a storyteller, with the gamer.

Basically, my point is this: There is a fine line between artistic license and artistic responsibility, especially in the storytelling medium. (Something that the gaming media is unable to grasp, somehow). Bioware should have the artistic freedom to mold the mechanics of their game however they see fit, as long as they also uphold their responsibility to the gamer and the integrity of the content.

That dev saying "Lots of speculation for everyone!" is a clear violation of that responsibility, since we were promised the exact opposite.

The railroaded endings full of plotholes also are.

But the details of our final confrontation with TIM are not.

It's a fine, blurry line between the two, but it's definitely there...

This situation is about more than just a bad ending. This is also involves trust between consumers and developers. This is about when "insta-buy" turns into, "Eh... no thanks."

This is what happens when a writer makes an enemy too powerful and paints himself into a corner. What I find staggering is that they presented a solution when Shepard went Tron on the Reaper. They could easily have made the crucible make organics go Tron on all the Reapers, big scale. Suddenly the playing field would be leveled out. At least that would have been better than the three colored pills we have now.

But it's science fiction. I've written Trek fanfic since I was 12 and you're never in a corner unless you choose it.

Heck, the Crucible could fire a beam that uses the relays to create an energy wave that not only destroys the Reapers in the galaxy but fans out to wipe out any stragglers in darkspace.

Maybe the Reapers are a *test* of the evolution. Technological and in terms of the ability to unite.

You can write your way out of anything and do it well. You only have to know how to write.

After all of this, if you have friends who are still thinking about purchasing; I suggest you take a cue from 'good guy Greg.' Let Bioware be out of touch all they want, they can't be bothered to addres us anyways.

"Lots of speculation for Everyone!" at the bottom of the page.'"

Great. So in the end I gave BioWare my money for this game, but some fanfic writer will do their work.

They should really change all ME3 trailers out there. This game is not about "taking earth back", it's about losing fans.. and money ;-)

I mean, really.. I played ME1 and ME2 many times, right after my first playthroughs, I loved it.. but ME3..? I was sure I would play it again, until some stupid laser hit me, my teammates teleported themselfs away and that space magic and mass murder (goodbye, citadel. Paragon Shepard does not care for you) thing there happened.

There is just no motivation left to play this thing. Mass Effect is about it's own story, if you ruin this, you ruin the whole game. Good job, BioWare.. you did that.

I know 9 people who played this game but not one of them liked the way it ended, not one of them wants to play this again. Really, this is not looking like you did it right. Every true fan I know is "pissed" because of it. If it won't be changed, many of them - sureley - won't be BW fans any longer. And no one cares for multiplayer DLC or something like "take omega back".. we don't need boring maps, new character-outfits or DLC that gives us nothing more then a few war assets. We need an end. Trying to sell anything else will fail, I'm sure of it.

If Bioware ran this ending with 3rd party playtesters, they would have known how awful the ending truly was. Whether they decide to do anything with the information is another matter entirely though.

You're assuming it's a room of playtesters that all think like you do. That's an outright silly thing to think.

I don't think that's fair. The numbers for the community here are somewhere around 90%. On other sites using other polls, I've never seen them lower then 80%. It's not like this is an isolated reaction. A random sampling of gamers would have shown this pretty easily.

Tallrickruush:

At least at this point, I'm pretty sure we're past the first standard corporate counter-moves. Fewer and fewer "attack" articles are appearing against the unhappy fan base and more are at least acknowledging there may be some validity to the complaints (a standard paradigm shift to the center by the media to try and come out on the winning side)

EA knows they have a problem and it's not going away. Now it just comes down to the economic fallout and cost assessment. I'll admit, this is an incredible thing to watch as someone who studied corporate response tactics years ago. The social media power aspect of a situation like this is perhaps unwieldy, fickle, and as unpredictable as a Reaper on Red Bull! But impressive nonetheless!

What I find most fascinating is that groups like Take Back Mass Effect are so quickly organized (before the internet these campaigned had to be created by letter-writing, phones and slow media attention sometimes taking months) that tried-and-true corporate counter-measures are simply outmaneuvered. As an old gamer, I'm in awe of the rapid deployment of market forces the internet in conjunction with 24 hour news cycle allows.

A good recent case study on this and how the tactics play out is Mr. Limbaugh's recent gaffe here in the U.S. After loosing roughly 100 sponsors, he's now on “vacation”.

And you can bet they shut down the boards temporarily because someone just turned this chess game onto the floor. Release a statement deflecting the source and not the content and go back into damage control mode.
