Q: How was BioWare involved in the creation of this story?
A: A story like The
Final Hours is only possible with an incredible amount of
support,coooperation and trust from the game development team. Casey and
I first started talking about a Final Hours story around Mass Effect in
the Spring of 2011 and I began work on it during the summer of last
year. Even though he was in the thick of finishing the game, he was
generous with his time, as were many other team members at BioWare. They
sat down for interviews, photos, and answered countless questions over
e-mail.
Unlike Valve, EA is a huge game publisher (which owns
BioWare) and navigating the kind of access I needed to the team wasn't
easy. But I must thank the tireless Andrew Wong, the head of BioWare's
PR group, for his energy, responsiveness and support of this project
across many trips to Edmonton. Even though he was launching one of this
year's biggest games, he and his team, including Lisa Chan, always made
time for the Final Hours. Similarly, my thanks extends to Jeff Brown at
EA. Many of you many know him as nothing more than EA's oft-quoted and
colorful "spokesman," and while his quotes are legendary, he is also one
of the smartest guys I know and a dear friend. Jeff was instrumental in
inspiring me to continue with the Final Hours series and helped ensure
that I had to support of EA to write the story I wanted to write.
Casey on after Mass Effect 3
"Whatever we do would likely happen before or during the events of Mass Effect 3, not after"

Mac Walters on the Star Child/Reapers
"Originally,
with the catalyst, the star child at the end of the game, I had written
that much more in the guise of a investigative style conversation,
where there is something he tells you but then, you get to ask a bunch
of questions and you get your questions answered. But then me and Casey
talked and decided, lets keep the conversation "High level". Give you
the details that you need to know, but don't get into the stuff that you
don't need to know. Like "How long have they been reaping?" You don't
need to know the answers to the mass effect universe. So we
intentionally left those out"
Deutsch: Eigentlich sollte der Dialog mit Star Child viel elaborierter sein, aber man hat entschieden: Die Fans brauchen keine Antworten auf das Mass Effect Universum.
Casey on the End Boss
We
had the final fight with the Illusive man in the game, but it just felt
very Video Gamey. It didnt fit in with the themes. And really, is there
a point of the end boss if only for the sake of an end boss?
Deutsch: Eigentlich sollte es einen Endfight gegen den Illusive Man geben(auch zu sehen im Artbook), wurde aber gecanceld, da zu "videospielerisch"
On Tali's Face
We
eventually decided that she gives you a memento of her pictures, but the
team was throwing around a lot of pictures and designs until we decided
on something and said "Yup, that's her".
Deutsch: Tali sollte ein Gesicht bekommen, das Team hat ein paar Designs angefetigt, bis sie dachten: Jo, das isse(auch wenn wir wissen das Talis Gesicht nur ein Stock Foto von Getty Images war)
On Deciding the End of the Game
The
illusive man boss fight had been scrapped... but there was still much
debate. On night walters scribbled down some thought on various ways the
game could end with the line "Lots of speculation for Everyone!" at the
bottom of the page.
And even in November the gameplay team was
still experimenting with an endgame sequence where players would
suddenly lose control of Shepard's movement and fall under full reaper
control. (This sequence was dropped because the gaemplay mechanic proved
too troublesome to implement alongside dialogue choices).
Deutsch: Bis zum Ende der Entwicklung war noch nicht ganz klar, wie das Ende ablaufen sollte,es gab(sic!) sogar eine Szene, in der Shepard komplett von den Reapern indoktriniert wurde. Haben sie dann aber nicht mit ins spiel gebracht, da sie das gameplaytechnisch nicht umsetzen konnten.
