On the subject of Battlestar, how about the *original* BSG continuity? Or rather, the end of Galactica 1980. That had obnoxious space children, a major character stranded on an unknown world, and a generally poor outlook for the future. Hmm...

Wait, what part of 1980 was good?

The original ending of Great Expectations was pretty bad, and the rewrite was actually pretty powerful. I wasn't that fond of the rest of the book though, I could've cared less how it ended. The Matrix ending was okay, but after the end of the second one, I really wanted to see Keanu Reeves wake up next to Bob Newhart and say "woah!" So yeah, I knew the ending wouldn't be as much fun.

I like the ending of Lost considering they had to work with the entire fifth season. Had they put that ending at the end of season three, I would've expected better.

The ending of Existential was pretty bad, but on par with the rest of the movie. I liked the end of FF1, but a friend of mine hated it.

BSG - Can anyone explain Starbuck then?
LotR - It was terrible, first on run away, second one run away with big battles, third one run toward with the same big battles only bigger and no Christopher Lee.
Scooby Doo - Why did they bring in Scrappy Doo?Lost - So it turned out to be what people speculated first series and were told they were so far off the money.

What makes the ME3 ending such a spectacular fail was that they had nailed the story. I mean nailed it. And then for absolutely no reason they introduce star-brat, and in the span of 5 minutes create disastrous reversals of theme, massive plotholes, and completely undo the player's effort over three games. If the game had ended with the crucible firing while Andersen and Sheperd watched, without any decision or explanation, it would have been a better ending. A non-ending would have been better.

That is a true catastrophe of story-telling.

Kotor 2

Ill tell you the Kotor 2 ending and reflecting on the cut-content from KOTOR2 makes me think of ME3. ME3 as a whole was just "vison lost."

You know I see similarities there myself. Both abandoned more detailed endings due to deadlines hanging over their developers heads. At least that's how I see why Mass Effect 3's ending is the way it is.

People mention Firefly but have you all forgotten about Serenity?

BSG
Lost
Matrix
Soprano's (arguable),
almost every Final Fantasy,
Breath of Fire 3,
Dune series (sort of, also concerning technological singularity)
Shadow of the Colossus (actually liked it, but definitely "Lots of speculation for everyone!")
Xenogears (kinda)
Xenosaga (kinda, but mostly because it got so condensed)
The Last Remnant
Dragon Age 2

Actually... most of those aren't even in the same league as ME3's ending, considering the time and emotional investment... so, not much else has ended this badly.

I know that I probably can't change anyone's mind about the overall quality of KoTOR 2, but you might not be so harsh when you consider that the entire game was developed in 11months. When they started, Obsidian was working from Feargus Urquhart's kitchen table.

Yeah, the game had problems. One huge issue was that after they started development, LucasArts axed a good chunk of the story for being too dark and morally grey for the franchise. You can still see some of the overtones in the completed version of the game.

Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Sopranos, and the Matrix.

In fact, ME3's ending has a lot in common with Matrix and Battlestar Galactica.

Neverwinter Nights 2, before DLC. Rocks fall, everybody dies.
Fallout 3, before DLC. Radiation, you die.

I'm just sayin'...

Hopefully that trend is continued.

Though I never watched it personally I knew some people who were really ticked over how the Sopranos ended.

Firefly didn't end at all, there was no conclusion in the series. Serenity was that conclusion. It serves as a perfect example of a bittersweet ending, with triumph and tragedy comingled.
