Why I think it is good that Bioware just screwed up

So while some people are going bananas in this thread because of the recent news, I am actually quite happy with it. I know some people are probably thinking "How can this monumental idiot be happy?", and to be honest it is because Bioware just dropped the ball on the endings - it is a relief to me. There has been a lot of speculation on the so-called "indoctrination theory" on the boards, but many seem to miss the more grim underlying message if that happens to be true: We would lack the actual ending in the final product. Or rather Bioware probably purposely cut the ending to sell it as DLC, knowing they would reap the profits of it.

So there you have it, I am happy that Bioware just screwed up and that there is no grand ending-dlc conspiracy, as I find such totally unacceptable.

In any case how do you feel about cutting out the end of a game to sell it later? Is this acceptable in a story-based game such as Mass Effect or is it bad business practice? Would you buy the ending of ME3 if this turned out to be the case, and why?

I think it's good because I actually like the endings but the indoctrination theory was starting to make sense. Now i know i can just enjoy the ending for what it is.

To be honest knowing they screwed up and thinking they screwed up doesn't make much difference to me.

Its still killed the series for me. This game has no replay value at all now.

OP, in full agreement.

We all screw up.
Question is, do they want to (will they bother) to fix it.
I hope they do.

I don't see how anyone could have ever seen the indoctrination theory as something more than just trying to justify the horrible endings.

Hopefully with these last two bungles, they'll start putting more thought into their writing. It seems they've been slipping lately in quality.

I don't care if they screwed up or this is a conspiracy theory where the governments of the Earth are trying out a socio-psychological test.

I just want the last 1% of the game amended/fixed/whatever to give the closure they kept saying would happen but never did.

I am fine with them screwing up. I just don't want them getting bull headed about it being good when from nearly all sides they are being shown why people consider it to be a poor ending, and not even because it was not a happy full of rainbows ending, but because we could have gotten almost as much closure on this story had the game been canceled.

If they take the time to fix this disaster, they will regain some of my respect as developers. They need to be aware that they have made a massive error in judgement and take steps to show their fan base they are not above looking to their opinions for ways to fix it.

I agree that it is good to hear that they just screwed up and that there is no conspiracy.

What I don't like is that they fail to acknowledge the problem.

They have mistaken Hubris for Humility it seems, as another fan put it.

Look guys, I agree the ending is terrible and soul-crushing (to some), but all this does is confirm that Bioware is just people. If you hold the line a new, more reasonable ending will surely come. I think the message is beginning to sink in. :-)

I think Forbes said it best when they said you COULD pull the "sell an ending" for extra thing once, but ONLY once. And it would be pretty damn suicidal.

I'm happy because maybe it means this terrible company will go under. With TOR quickly dying, the DA2 debacle and now this, bioware's running out of loyal fans. And if TOR does fail, that's a big loss.

They could do it once.

I'm holding the line. I'll accept that they screwed up, but this has gotta get fixed so they and the fans can move forward and enjoy the Mass Effect franchise.

So, the endings are just terrible after all. Ah well, whatever. Moving on.
