Well my character uses a dagger very often, so his dexterity is extremely high. Maybe that's the reason he can stay in combat so long? Time to respec Alistair. And reset his tactics. What tactics other than the poultice thing do you recommend?

Get force field on your mage (e.g. Morrigan). If Alistair is has aggo and is taking damage just force field him, just watch out for dispel.

As an arcane warrior I don't even use a conventional tank. I just cast fireball to draw aggro, cast an AoE spell (e.g. Inferno) and then force field myself and watch as everything dies.

Really, I gave Alistair the best armor and shield I have, kept him healed, made him take health potions with low health and gave him high constitution.

He drops like a fly. Every. Time.

In every SINGLE battle (even minor) he dies.

I then tried giving the same armor to MY character (didn't give him a shield because he's a dual-wielder). Never dies. The only time my character ever dies is when we are severely outnumbered. I don't even have to do anything but deal damage with my guy and take a potion when I'm on the verge of dying and I'm set for the whole game. But Alistair... man, that guy sucks. The only time he's ever really been useful was in a certain fight near the end of the Dalish Elves quest.

How's Alistair working out for you?

You are clearly doing something very wrong.  Alistair died in my game 3 times <spoilers removed :(>

Shale is way more proficient as a Tank it appear, so is the Dog, Alistair just seem like he is whining all the time and being a Kid... I for certain have found one use for him, but telling would be a spoiler *Evil Grin*

A properly built and used Alistair is pretty unstoppable. There is a certain fight at a certain later stage in the game that many people complain about becouse a mob hits very very hard and they die too fast. My Alistair hardly noticed the blows all it took was some regeneration to keep him up.

I spent very few points in constitution until the very end of the game. 2-3 points total maybe. Dumped everything into STR initially until I broke 40 so that he could wear massive armor, with occasional points into DEX if they were needed for the shield tree. Then pumped DEX to be able to take all the shield talents. Only after maxing shield talents did I go further in warrior tree and specializations (templar/champion). While initially I put on him sets of armor I eventually decided it was better to use mismatched pieces of armor to maximize his tankability. After DEX and STR were at required levels I sprinkled some points into WILL for combat moves some into DEX for better tanking and some into CON for the heck of it. Still from all the bonuses and gear his CON was 40+ even if base was still around 16+

Gearing him is very important. I used a +12 def shield until very late in the game (you can get it in Ozr by pickpocketing an important person). Also in Ozr is a VERY good ring for tanking you can buy that gives lots of CON and magic resist among other stuff.

For tactics, I only use the bare bones that can be automated, like keeping auras active, attacking nearest guy if nothing else to do, chugging the weakest pot if under 25%. One note is that I only used one mage on my first play through which was Wynn as a healbot and buffbot mostly. Her tactics were to throw down regeneration if anyone was under 75%. Anything else I do manually from pausing, like shield bashing, stuns, specific healing. When facing a hard hitting boss I sometimes made Alistair chug a defense potion.

Are you dumping them into dexterity, or constitution? While more HP might seem like the better choice, high dexterity means he'll hardly ever get hit to need that much HP.

The most important thing.

I found him very vulnerable until I increased his dexterity. Not getting hit is infinitely better than absorbing damage.

Bingo! This is where the problem lies - easily enough remedied, but it's my OPINION that dex shouldn't be as important for tankers as con - I call "balance issue" on this.

Exactly what i did. Start pumping STR until you can wear the best armor, and then go DEX until it's high enough for the entire shield tree. After that i went CON/STR and even put a few points into WIL to help with his sustained abilities.

Definitely forgo the Warrior/Templar trees until after you max out the shield tree.

mm you might also want to look at your whole party tactic in detail ... as long as you kill fast enough and keep the majority of the mobs under control you do not even need a real tank in about 90% of the fights. alistair does not start out as a real powerhouse and the real tank gear is not available early on but normally he is still capable of doing his job because part of his skill is using his shield for those stuns and knock downs before he gets overrun by everyone.

I find he starts of weak (my dw warrior I was just playing is better at level 7 because his dex is much higher), but around 10 to 12 he starts to really shine.

If you have Stone Prisoner, grab Shale and use him till about then (although Shale is so OP it almost feels like cheating.)

I used shale all through my normal play through, but heard good things about Alistair once he had some gear.  So this run I did nightmare with only Alistair, he took quite a beating till about level 8 or 9, but now hes holding his own very well at level 12ish.

Wynne, + investing in some health poultices, or If i'm feeling really cheesy a forcefield (i've done it only twice so far and one time wasnt really needed, i dunno why i did it) health < 50% tactic, and nightmare is starting to feel like normal again, I might have to get a mod that increases the difficulty further or something.

Shield Defense with Shield Mastery and Expertise, Shield Balance and Tactics, combined with buffs such as Heroic Defense and Glyph of Warding.. and then Heal, Regeneration, Lifeward, Group Heal, Cleansing Aura..Those made my Alistair very hard to kill, not to mention that he can use Health poultices just in case, Don't forget Taunt so your healer will not get mobbed by supporting him. =)

Maybe he died quickly because of debuffs from 2 handed sword talents (sunder armor) or Shattering Shots, try to kill Mages first and then 2 handed wielders, then dual wielders... kill archers with your other characters.. and leave the shield wielders last to kill..

about attributes.. STR min 42, DEX min 26 and the rest is up to u, I'd put them into CON though..

In my first play through of the game, I thought the same thing and was about to give up on Alistair. Then I saw a post regarding this subject and someone said that if Alastair is dying a lot, it means he's doing his job (ie getting all the aggro) and whatever healers you may or may not have in your group are not doing their job. This was before I got Wynne in my group and sure enough, once Alastair had a capable healer at his back, he was a great tank.

Sorry, I'll add 200 lines of spaces next time. But at least now you know a trick to make the fight easier if you choose that path, the fight is nearly impossible at a lower level.

no, next time you wont post any spoilers in this forum at all. There's no reason to do it.

Alistair is a DEX tank, not a Stam tank.

Stamina is either yours or Shale's job

Alistair's not only a great tank but he's also an excellent killer. Oh the number of times he's managed to hastily land that last hit robbing me of the precious kill. Sometimes tempted to give him a two-handed sword to slow him down...

(edit: huh, 'two-handed sword' sounds just as dirty as '2hander'. eh.)

I'd give him my own "2hander" if he would know how to handle it properly.
