Tactical management is everything in the combat of this game. I think all characters and builds are roughly equal given good strategy and tactics.

Never thought about adding dexterity points to Alistair...BUT correct me if I can't recall off the op of my head but isn't Shale low dex?

A properly built and used Alistair is pretty unstoppable. There is a certain fight at a certain later stage in the game that many people complain about becouse a mob hits very very hard and they die too fast. My Alistair hardly noticed the blows all it took was some regeneration to keep him up.
I spent very few points in constitution until the very end of the game. 2-3 points total maybe. Dumped everything into STR initially until I broke 40 so that he could wear massive armor, with occasional points into DEX if they were needed for the shield tree. Then pumped DEX to be able to take all the shield talents. Only after maxing shield talents did I go further in warrior tree and specializations (templar/champion). While initially I put on him sets of armor I eventually decided it was better to use mismatched pieces of armor to maximize his tankability. After DEX and STR were at required levels I sprinkled some points into WILL for combat moves some into DEX for better tanking and some into CON for the heck of it. Still from all the bonuses and gear his CON was 40+ even if base was still around 16+
Gearing him is very important. I used a +12 def shield until very late in the game (you can get it in Ozr by pickpocketing an important person). Also in Ozr is a VERY good ring for tanking you can buy that gives lots of CON and magic resist among other stuff.
For tactics, I only use the bare bones that can be automated, like keeping auras active, attacking nearest guy if nothing else to do, chugging the weakest pot if under 25%. One note is that I only used one mage on my first play through which was Wynn as a healbot and buffbot mostly. Her tactics were to throw down regeneration if anyone was under 75%. Anything else I do manually from pausing, like shield bashing, stuns, specific healing. When facing a hard hitting boss I sometimes made Alistair chug a defense potion.
Thanks for this informative post. I will spec him like you did next playthrough. Funny I thought constitution would be most important for tanking.

Seriously though...does anybody who has used both Alistair and Shale as tanks on separate occasions actually think he is a better tank than Shale?
hey i just gave Sten a shield and kept his 2h skill and he is tanking reasonably after i patched my pc game because he simply has more standard strenght than the other pc's so he can wear the heavy stuff faster. yes there's a loss of skill points ... however tanking is 75% about the armor gear and 25% about the stats ... that is if you do not mess up for your party tactics because the invulnerable tank simply does not exist in game. tanks are simply meant to last longer than others but eventually you either kill them or they kill you and normally you will never count on a tank to be your prime killer.
as for shale bein a better tank ... well 100 hp more or something than others when i picked him up ... err ... the defense is not the same but with his damage and a healer ... mm lol i'll never complain except about opness for the most occuring situations.

He might not be as good as Shale (i don't know, I only used Shale for his quest and had him as melee DPS), but he's by no means bad. Tanked all the dragons and such just fine.

Admittedly, I switched out to Sten with Yusaris for the dragons, though. It IS Yusaris, after all!

I've pretty much used him as others outlined. My first priority for him was massive armor so strength was immediately pumped up. When I realized he needed some dex for shield talents which were seemingly necessary I went for that next. I since then have been working on Con haven't touched willpower or dex since maxing shields. I may go that route now with my new found insight.
