So with the release of the “last hours” notes it's safe to say that what you see is what you get. It's over except for a small chance that retake succeeds (which I view with dim, very dim hope).

We really do get only RGB options in the end, despite what
we were told about ABC.
There really are massive plot holes, so much so that entire alternate theories like "Indoctrination"  can credibly exist.

Our choices in sum are only relevant in racking up a
numerical score (EMS) that doesn’t really
change much of anything in the end.
The fictional elements at play aren’t a hint at
something more, they just fall short.
The ending was constructed for flash, impact, and
speculation, rather than to tell a good story.
They did delete scenes that most fans consider to be
emotional and meaningful.

It’s upsetting to say the least. I loved the journey.
I loved the game. I loved the datapad. I loved that my choices came back and had relevance during the journey. But in
the end… In the end the pigeon hole is too small and the scenes too hurried,
dumbed down, and unfinished. Looking at the end game notes I think it’s
even sadder because I enjoy the ending concepts and the traditional golden age science
fiction themes they try to encompass. But the execution was rushed and poor.
The focus was obviously not on the fan’s expectations – it was on
being remembered as a company…

Well, Casey, you wanted your game to be remembered for its
ending. It will be. But instead of this conversation:

“Hey, you remember that great sci-fi game back in early
2000s, like 2007 or so?”
“Mass Effect? Best sci-fi games ever, period. So
awesome. Especially the third one.”
“Man I might have to play that again sometime for old
time’s sake”

You’ll have this instead:
“Hey what was that sci-fi game back on the 360 with
the flop ending?”
“Mass Effect?”
“Yeah that was it – boy such a disappointment.”
“I thought it was okay, I remember the forums exploded
about how they didn’t like it. It was supposed to be a sure thing.”

Poor Mike… You thought you felt bad on March 8th
when the forums exploded? How do you feel now knowing that the fans have
collectively raised over $50,000 to charity just to ask you to change what they
thought was a poor ending to your product? I can’t even imagine how that
must be.

You know video games are an art form. I can’t say
otherwise given the defense I’ve spouted about them in the past. But this
isn’t a go to the museum and see a painting kind of art. This is more
like a commission piece. We have commissioned you to provide us with an end to
our experience that we think is fitting. It seems that many of us think you’ve
failed in that respect. I know I’ll pause before ever considering one of
your products again.

Because in the end you have punked our story. You punked our
hero. Punked his or her squad. Laughed at the concept of providing closure or to
meeting fan expectations. Admitted to making plot decisions just to create controversy.
It’s as bad as primetime television. It’s worse because we trusted you.
You punked US...

So yes, you’ll be remembered… A fine legacy, no?
