 So I read up that you can get the the geth rifle when recruiting Tali, but it has to be harcourt or higher, can I change the difficulty before I do the mission or do I have to start the beginning of the whole game on hardcore or insanity?

I heard you can change the difficulty right before going into the room where you find it, but that didn't work. Maybe later versions of the game were changed so you couldn't get it that easily. So at some point I'm going to replay the mission changing to Hardcore earlier and earlier. If I had to guess I'd say if you defeat the last boss on the level on the higher difficulty setting then you can get the rifle, but if not then I think changing before you start the mission or as soon as you land ought to be enough. For casual gamers having to play the whole game on a harder difficulty just to get a rifle might be a bit much.

It can't be changed right before the last room, but you can adjust your setting right before LANDING on the planet. You don't have to start the game on Hardcore or Insanity to get the gun.
