For me, yes it is. I say so because it is a horrible ending for what I consider the greatest series ever made.

No it doesn't have the worst ending ever. Half Life 2 anyone?

It is particularly bad when contrasted to the rest of the series though.

Yes! After playing video games half my life I can say without any doubt that this is indeed worst ending I have ever seen.

Well Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's ending was pretty WTF like ME3's was, but at least you knew there was more on the way, so it was forgivable.

Given the situation of it being a 3 game series.... then yes I think it is the worst ending of all time... =|

It's up there. In fact, I think it's one of the worst endings to any story in any medium (Movie, TV show, Books, Games etc.).

It's not just a bad ending, it's an ending that changes the entire story in the last 15 min, discards major themes, and borderline retcons past plot.

Such things are relative.

Worst ending ever? Not by far. It's actually pretty good.

Worst ending compared to the quality of the rest of the series? Yes.

Worst ending compared to the quality of the rest of the series and what we were promised? Definitly!

That the rest of the game is so good, the endings make it even worse. It's like someone baked a beautiful delicious cheese cake and as you ate it, you finally got to the last bit, but the chef decided to put in rat droppings for the last mouthful.

I'd say so. Perhaps not worst in execution, but rather for the fact that no ending (whether it be a movie, game or book) has physically upset me the way ME3's ending has.

Hell, even my feelings on Firefly's cancellation is tame compared to the emotions I feel regarding ME3's conclusion.

It is certainly up there, not just among games but among general media. It gets a special place because of the way it manages to make empty so many great things that came before it.

I have seen worse endings, however those products were A LOT less story driven and worse written.

Mass Effect 3 ending is the worst when you compare it to games it is supposed to "end"

You might be right, but HL2 was followed by 2 exp packs which I think were expected. But I do remember that WTF moment at the end when I was pulled out of the boss fight.

Yes. Yes, it is.

I'd go a step further than videogames & say it's probably one of the worst endings to any story of any medium. It just utterly violates the author-reader contract.

I've seen a lot of people say this. There are countless amounts of video games out there and let's face it, there are lazier and more horribly coded endings out there. In fact some game's don't even have endings, going back to the old 8 to 16 bit days.

But...

Let's think about this, and look at the circumstances surrounding Mass Effect. It's a trilogy that gets the player very invested in the story, characters and the choices they make. The devs also continously boasted about how your choices throughout the trilogy will have an effect on the the end, and that the endings will vary in "wildly" different ways. Then looks look at the widespread outrage of fans who felt betrayed and lied to. I've never seen this much disappointment over an ending.

With that being said, given the circumstances, I think Mass Effect 3 could very well have the worst ending in Video Game history, in terms of the impact it caused. There's worse endings, but none of them affected the players like ME3 did.

What are your feelings on this?

Absolutely not, its no where near the worst of all time... but its pretty high up on the unforgivable list... :crying:

I don't know about worst. Certainly most damaging and most disapointing. especially If (as I suspect from all I hear here and fro my non-BSN gaming peers) it goes from most anticipated game of the year to most returned and reviled.

I haven't read the whole topic, so apologies if I'm stating a point already said. It's not just that the ending of ME3 is considered by most to be bad, it's the sharp contrast in quality between the ending and the rest of the game that makes it so glaring. If the rest of the game was equally poor, we wouldn't be seeing this kind of outcry.

When I look at the endings from a purely analytical position, I would say that the ending isn't as bad as it seems. If you consider the ending to be only of Mass Effect 3, than it's even better than that (better being used VERY loosely here.)

The ending was very decidedly mediocre, in my opinion, except for two specific terrible points (Joker leaving the battle early, and the Catalyst seemingly destroying the need for Saren/Sovereign in ME1). So, no, not the worst ending to a video game ever.

However, if you compare the level of writing in all three games, and how amazingly Bioware wove the threads of everything together in ME3, the ending is such a letdown that it feels worse than it is, simply by comparison.

I don't like the endings, but I don't really have hope that we'll see anything better. Maybe, just maybe, some clarification DLC is all that it will take, but I kinda doubt it.

Like someone else said but whom I am to lazy to quote, most endings if they are bad just make me laugh, Mass Effect just infuriated/saddened me, which is a testament to how great the game and it's characters were.
I wouldn't have cared if the whole game sucked... c'mon, I un-installed 10 other games so I could fit this on my computer, and none of them ended the way ME3 did.

I will be honest and say if this was a one-shot game (in other words, not part of a epic trilogy) the endings probably would have been fine.

One of the most disappointing, only because of how great the rest of the series was.
