It is particularly bad when contrasted to the rest of the series though.

It's not just a bad ending, it's an ending that changes the entire story in the last 15 min, discards major themes, and borderline retcons past plot.

Worst ending ever? Not by far. It's actually pretty good.
Worst ending compared to the quality of the rest of the series? Yes.
Worst ending compared to the quality of the rest of the series and what we were promised? Definitly!

Hell, even my feelings on Firefly's cancellation is tame compared to the emotions I feel regarding ME3's conclusion.

Mass Effect 3 ending is the worst when you compare it to games it is supposed to "end"

No it doesn't have the worst ending ever. Half Life 2 anyone?

You might be right, but HL2 was followed by 2 exp packs which I think were expected. But I do remember that WTF moment at the end when I was pulled out of the boss fight.

I'd go a step further than videogames & say it's probably one of the worst endings to any story of any medium. It just utterly violates the author-reader contract.

I've seen a lot of people say this. There are countless amounts of video games out there and let's face it, there are lazier and more horribly coded endings out there. In fact some game's don't even have endings, going back to the old 8 to 16 bit days.
But...
Let's think about this, and look at the circumstances surrounding Mass Effect. It's a trilogy that gets the player very invested in the story, characters and the choices they make. The devs also continously boasted about how your choices throughout the trilogy will have an effect on the the end, and that the endings will vary in "wildly" different ways. Then looks look at the widespread outrage of fans who felt betrayed and lied to. I've never seen this much disappointment over an ending.
With that being said, given the circumstances, I think Mass Effect 3 could very well have the worst ending in Video Game history, in terms of the impact it caused. There's worse endings, but none of them affected the players like ME3 did.
What are your feelings on this?
Absolutely not, its no where near the worst of all time... but its pretty high up on the unforgivable list...

I don't know about worst. Certainly most damaging and most disapointing. especially If (as I suspect from all I hear here and fro my non-BSN gaming peers) it goes from most anticipated game of the year to most returned and reviled.

The ending was very decidedly mediocre, in my opinion, except for two specific terrible points (Joker leaving the battle early, and the Catalyst seemingly destroying the need for Saren/Sovereign in ME1). So, no, not the worst ending to a video game ever.
However, if you compare the level of writing in all three games, and how amazingly Bioware wove the threads of everything together in ME3, the ending is such a letdown that it feels worse than it is, simply by comparison.
I don't like the endings, but I don't really have hope that we'll see anything better. Maybe, just maybe, some clarification DLC is all that it will take, but I kinda doubt it.

I wouldn't have cared if the whole game sucked... c'mon, I un-installed 10 other games so I could fit this on my computer, and none of them ended the way ME3 did.

One of the most disappointing, only because of how great the rest of the series was.
