I don't know. If Final Fantasy 7 got released today with that ending there'd be a pretty huge stink about it.

But the fact that this ends a trilogy trumps that imo.

Worst ending of all time?

No.

Worst ending of all time when compared to the game and series it was attached to?

Yes.

I don't know if I would argue that it had the worst ending, but I could argue that it has the ending that is most thematically unsuited for the franchise it was supposedly a part of. Or to put it another way, it could have been workable as an ending to a story that was built from the ground up to convey the themes that the ending was reinforcing. That story (IMO) however, was not Mass Effect.

It depends on the person.

On its own ME 3's ending is bad/mediocre, but to some people (namely people on the forum who invested a lot of time and interest into ME) it is the worst ending to them.

Also its arguably the worst end to a series ever...

Worst ending I've ever had the displeasure to sit through.

Compared to the quality that went before it, it is certainly up there. The Mass Effect series was so damn good and then the ending just fell waaaaaay short of the that standard.

Neverwinter Nights 2's original campaign was a literal 'rocks fall, everyone dies' ending. But they did make up for it with Mask of the Betrayer, so it went from being my most hated ending to one of my favorite games of all time.

With the knowledge that ME3 is a trilogy versus a single game, and that I was far more attached to Shepard than I was the KC, I agree that it's the biggest letdown that I've experienced in gaming. Just isolating the endings, however, they're both awful moments that retroactively ruin any desire to play the game again. MotB saved NWN2 for me. I'm hoping something will come along that will do the same for ME3.

It has to be up there. Because it goes beyond just being a bad ending. It actually undermines and redefines the entire plot/series all in the final 15 min of the game.

Any kind of story that changes the rest of the story in the closing minutes risks ruining the rest of the plot. And Mass Effect did just that. I would argue, this is one of the worst endings i've seen in Movie/TV/Books as well.

Not of all time, but it is definitely one of the most polarizing and controversial of this console generation.

That I need to think really hard to even come up with some other videogame that has an ending as bad definitely puts it in the running for "Worst ending ever!"

Dragon Age 2 may be the very reason why I actually like ME3's ending since it's nowhere as bad.

I've played games with endings that kill its replayability; but, I've never played a game where the ending killed the replayability of other games.

So, I guess, yes, worst ending of all time, that I've seen.

If you think logically no. Some races still survive and what not, and in other movies, simply everyone dies, the galaxy gets blown up, the hero gets struck by lightning in the end. Things like that... but then again, nobody really cared for any of those movies, maybe spent 2 hours with it, then realise it sucked and thrown it away. going like "pfffft...." and move on.

In this game we invested too much to just leave it like that, we deserved more. so in this regard i absolutely think this is the worst game ending in history.

edit: oh i thought it was about any ending, i let movies count here, ah well ill leave this up here anyway.

Absolute?
No.
Compared to the rest of the game?
Yes.
Worst ending when compared with its potential and how the rest of the game set it up in my books.

Because of its Importance and relative to it impact on the whole series...Without a doubt.

Meh game with crap ending, so what.

But this was a failure unlike anything I have seen.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 had a better ending than ME3. I want you all to remember KOTOR2--a game infamously butchered by timing and with enough cut content to choke a horse, so bad that it actually motivated people to learn how to code just to fix it--and just think of how bad ME3 is to surpass it. And just to make things worse, ME in general is damn near unmoddable, so you can never fix it yourself.

I would first say best ending to a game and trilogy is hands down assassin's creed: revelations. FYI, this includes movies too. It was so well done.

Worst ending and game that I can think of was force unleashed 2. although cnc4 was so bad in every way (hmmmmmmmmmm....another EA game produced by a previously awesome company... coincidence?)

On that scale, where would I put mass effect 3? Well much higher than the bottom. Me3 had some much build up and high expectations, it was bound to make some people unhappy. But no where near the top.

I mainly consider the ending to not be an ending. So in some ways I haven't even rated it.

Srsly hate ea. Any game studio they now control seems to have gotten very watered down, and immensely restricted.

It wasn't the worst ever. But for me, following mass effect since day one, like most people here i guess, the ending was profoundly devastating. I mean i was so hyped up and then i just kinda died a little inside. I just decided to get drunk and try to forget, but that failed, hell that made things worse. It was like watching someone toss puppies in the air and shoot them.

And as far as EA goes, they're controlling ****s who **** up games:

Honestly, not the worst, the thing about the ending was that while I want it changed, the ending wasn't that objectively bad. It would have been a not good, but meh, ok ending if it was a single path kind of game (I get it has tons of plot holes, but honestly what long running series doesn't). Where it really destroyed me is mass effect is a multi-path game. The worst part of the ending is being railroaded into a choice you wouldn't pick. So in terms of the ending itself, it's not THAT bad, but in terms of the ending compared with the series, honestly I would say yes.

As many have said. There may be endings to games that are even shorter, make even less sense, offer lesser closure and explanation or are more badly written. Some may be even more lazy with recycling art assets in 3 different colors.

But none in my 30+ years of gaming was, on a relative scale, a bigger disappointment. Spend 30+ hours to build up something truly epic...
Then go out with a cheap whimper that goes against everything that came before (and call that "art" to boot).

Yeah that's pretty much what I said a few seconds earlier, but your explanation is significantly better worded, I feel the exact same way.

Worst game? Not by a long shot.
Worst game ending? Probably
Shortest time to kill a successful franchise? Without a doubt.

This absolutely what I;m trying to said.
Is it the worst ending by 1 game standard? No, there are lot worse than thise out there.
But it became the WORST possible if we take other two games into the consideration for it destroying the whole trilogy.
