The single best way to hold a position is to work with teammates and concentrate fire. Tech explosions and biotic explosions are much more difficult to use if you aren't working together with at least one other player.
That said, don't be a dick and play against another player. If you have two players trying to use biotic powers together don't keep Overloading the enemies they are attacking. If a Krogan is trying to go into Rage mode by meleeing weaker enemies don't shoot their targets. If a Infiltrator is trying to drop a Guardian by shooting through the slot on its shield don't stagger it.
Just use common sense and common courtesy and everyone wins.

If I'm the one who killed it, why is it "your" kill?

Then, it wasn't a matter of me thinking of it as killstealing. It made me feel like dead weight on the team, useless.
Now, after seeing Silver difficulty with moderate enthusiasm, I know that I'll have more than enough opportunities to prove my worth to the team. The resident Tali won't be dead-weight for long

"Kill stealing" is an idiotic concept. There is no record of your total number of kills, in a match, the post-game menu or anywhere else. Points for a kill are allocated according to the damage dealt by each player, so the player who gave an enemy the biggest kicking gets the most points. The guy I quoted got most of the points for the Brute being neutralised. The aim of this game is to shoot anything that moves. It's your fault if you can't finish an enemy quick enough because you're too busy trying to do your fancy biotic zumba hand slap melee on him.

As one who plays some melee focused types, I find it cool when a splattering power hits my target right when I land the blow... looks like I splattered em with my bare hands. Chuck Norris style.
But, yeah, the concept of killstealing is dumb in a game that everyone splits the same damn pie at the end anyways. Also, there have been times where Im playing something that is a 'setup' character. I soften the guys up, and team mates finish them. Most get it, and happily 'steal' the kill from me. Then, it will irritate me when we are working that way and I'm just a softening em up, and I move on to next targets and other guys don't take the kill.

Actually, we all get the same experience at the end of match regardless of who does the kill just like any RPG or MMO, experience is equally shared... the individual points just show how much each person contributed
already tested this soloing bronze matches & in 4 player bronze groups... same amount of experience at end of runs in solo as well as in 4 player matches
despite
killing all the mobs myself and actually had less experience than 4 player runs since the other players bonuses (like headshots, reviving, kill streaks, etc) didn't exist anymore to add to mine
ergo, play w/ more people to get more more experience since you will get their experience point bonuses also
