Of course, the ending is flawed..
But is it because the indoctrination theory is correct or is it because the writers made last minute changes to the ending?
By the time I regrouped with my crew and spoke to everyone over that short range com-terminal I really didn't feel like I was taking back earth like the ME3 promos promised
I ended the game with an military force value over 7000 because I made sure that from all the way back in ME1 my choices reflected my objective of preparing the galaxy for the reaper invasion and I was expecting to see cutscenes in ME3 where my choices paid off with the reapers being unprepared to face my overwhelming force of every able bodied member of every sentient species in the galaxy
I feel that the only way I can accept the ME3 endings total disregard for my work, is if we come to find that a DLC is released where Shepard overcomes indoctrination and wakes up to realize the fight for earth isn't over yet and after a good amount of play time to get my money's worth (hopefully some more time with the ME2 romances) the game leaves off at the point where we all know Mass Effect 4 is coming and Shepards story isn't quite over yet
That being said, I hope if the answer really is just bad writing I hope Bioware looks at all of our feedback and decides to say "ohh yeah that's we meant to do all along .. Hehe "
Bad writing or brilliant cliffhanger?

If it was "brilliant" people wouldn't be this upset. A cliffhanger to a story of five years and around 100 hours? No thanks.

Yea trilogy should definitly end with a cliffhanger

Bad writing. The Sopranos did a better "ambigous" ending than this. At least with the Sopranos you had equal arguments whether or not Tony lived, as opposed to ME3, where you're fairly certain EVERYONE'S DEAD.

Bad Cliffhanger.

Bad writing, even more terrible management from those in charge of passing the script. Those who were reviewing the script should've said at the very beginning "get back to the drawing table, this is not good enough".

If the indoctrination theory is true and the REAL ending will be released soon, then kudos, best cliffhanger ever.
If not, terribad writing.

Really you have to ask. Have you not read the info coming out of the app about development. Bad writing coupled with utter desperation, lack of forward thought and panic.

Brilliant cliffhanger leaves the player/viewer excited and wanting more. The ME3 ending made people want to forget the ending and never go anywhere near it again.

It was bad writing.
At this point, I think EA had nothing to do with this. This problem rest solely at the feet of Bioware.

Why can't it be both? If BioWare release a brilliant ending for free next week and totally clear their good name, that doesn't change the fact that what they have now ... is bad writing.

A cliffhanger works when it comes at the end of the second part of a trilogy, not the third.

So.......where does having a cliffhanger to end a trilogy make it brilliant?

If by bad you meant horrible on a grand scale i'd go with bad writing.

Bad writing. You don't end a trilogy with a cliffhanger. That'd be like ending Return of Jedi just as Vader is deciding to ice the Emperor.

You can't end a saga with a gigantic Cliffhanger what kinda of non-sense is that. That implies you plan on squeezing money out of your consumers that they have to absolutely also wait for/buy the next one if they want to know basically ANYTHING concerning the universe could even possibly continue.

Bad writing. They've made it clear this is the end of the story, any games that come later will not have anything to do with this trilogy, so cliffhanger is out of the question IMO.

In a continuing series like this a cliff-hanger is something that wraps up the narrative just told but teases the continuation of the saga. A great example would be the ending of Mass Effect 2. The plot of Mass Effect 2 is wrapped up and resolved, then we are teased with the incoming Reaper flotilla.
Pacing wise, Mass Effect 3 has even more on its' shoulders. As an audience we are conditioned to expect a rule of three in narrative franchises. The trilogy. Especially when the creators refer to the trilogy. Therefore Mass Effect 3 needs to wrap up itself, the trilogy and THEN tease the continuation of the franchise. It didn't even manage the first part of that.
