This isn't a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger is described as "An episode that ends in suspense". There's no suspense about the ending, just the earth-shattering horror of a failure coated in colours and an irrelevant cinematic.

You don't make cliffhangers when your intention is to wrap all loose ends and end a story.

Bad writing.

My question is, why a cliffhanger in the definitive ending to a series?

What good does that do? If you promised to end Commander Shepard's story, then damn well end it, don't leave it hanging by ambiguous threads.

Since this is supposed to be the last game of a trilogy I wouldn't think cliffhanger would be an option.

Bad writing. You don't end a trilogy with a cliffhanger. That'd be like ending Return of Jedi just as Vader is deciding to ice the Emperor.

Palpatine is sending lightning through Luke.

Darth Vader looks to Luke, looks to Palpatine.

Credits roll.

Actually, I'm kidding. That would be a lot better than this - no joke.

Well, it depends on how it was intentional. Basically, the ending is complete and utter crap if everything shown to us is what really happens. So Shepard gets hit by the death laser, somehow survives, gets shot by Marauder Shields coming out of nowhere and then the whole plot stops making sense, ultimately its space magic and your squadmembers get beamed to the normandy to strand on a paradise.

However, the alternative doesnt have to be indoc. Could also be that Shepard just died to the laser, the last few minutes being his brain messing with him as he died. Or pretty much anything else excluding space magic.

I like because the saga isn't over. I got the best ending and it felt right. I could elaborate more but I don't feel like writing it all down.

In a continuing series like this a cliff-hanger is something that wraps up the narrative just told but teases the continuation of the saga. A great example would be the ending of Mass Effect 2. The plot of Mass Effect 2 is wrapped up and resolved, then we are teased with the incoming Reaper flotilla.

Pacing wise, Mass Effect 3 has even more on its' shoulders. As an audience we are conditioned to expect a rule of three in narrative franchises. The trilogy. Especially when the creators refer to the trilogy. Therefore Mass Effect 3 needs to wrap up itself, the trilogy and THEN tease the continuation of the franchise. It didn't even manage the first part of that.

This.

The writing is bad whether it's intended as a cliffhanger or no.

Ending a trilogy you have no intent to continue with a cliffhanger? It's like...

Screw metaphors, it's just a hideous idea.

Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here but I'm hoping that mass effect isn't still just a trilogy and ME4 is in development
This is the only game I've ever given a single **** about enough to create an account to post on these forums so if it is just bad writing then thank you Bioware for breaking my heart
Now Jack has to suffer more loss but whatevs cuz nothing I did mattered anyway! Haha

Cliffhanger would've been correctly implemented in ME2, after playing hundreds of games and seen hundreds of endings I'll just straight up call this one lazy and bad writing.

Horrible on a scale that will likely become the new standard for a "turd ending".
