After actually using Leliana and Zev more in my second playthrough, I'm convinced that ranger is the best rogue spec.  The summoned animal, even if you don't bother setting tactics, is a much more significant increase in your party's power than any bonus granted by the other specs.  It's like having the dog with you while still have three companions.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I dunno, in the brood mother fight the pet gets shunted behind a cage of tentacles in the back of the room. Vexxing ... lethality + high cunning suggest assasin + bard specs. The improved bear is beastly most of the time (on trash, excuse the exression). With no gear does he die easily to dragon fire? Anyways that's only half an answer, I've only had the ranger thing for a little bit, seen most of the game without it.

Archery can do some nasty damage if properly played.

I think ranger suits the archery builds better because they benefit less from assasin.

Ranger is good for anyone, as opposed to Duelist or Assassin. That alone places Ranger on a piedestal. But that being said, Ranger is also great simply due to there being another target for the enemies to hit. They add good damage to the party, easily rivalling the added damage of most if not all other specializations.

You simply cannot go wrong with Ranger.

I've found my pets to be remarkably sturdy, and even put out enough damage to draw aggro occasionally. They are kind of annoying with the unsummoning on area transitions and inability to keep tactics set (or I just don't know what I'm doing). It makes me curious what a four ranger/bard party would be like using all bows... too bad we don't have enough rogues.

Duelist/Bard spec is also worth a look. With dueling/keen defense/evasion/song of courage, a high dex rogue becomes very hard to hit.

All the rogue specs are good depending on playstyle, so it's hard to say. I'm of the inclination Ranger is more potential dps than any of the others, The summons can be buggy, and they require more micromanagment, but they do respectable damage, and have some useful abilities.
