So rather than support your colleagues, rather than provide insight into the professional creative environment, you construct this long, self-aggrandizing condemnation for the Mass Effect 3 ending writers, and use your alleged credentials to support a position that has been repeated ad nauseam since release day?

This topic was made a month ago, not long after release day, unlike your post it was timely.  The idea was to bring attention to the technical failings rather than the emotional responses most players had, I succeeded in that sense. As for "self-aggrandizing", it's a nice parthian shot but I'd appreciate if you could point out such moments.

ah, I didn't read the date; scratch that last bit, but I stand by the rest. Why do you want to see their efforts continue to backfire? Why do you want to see these writers damned for their contributions in a  field very closely resembling your own? Have you never faced criticism, as a professional screenwriter? Have you ever worked in a team setting? Were you ever called a hack? How confident are you in your writing? Why did you use the word Parthian?

I'm too old for strawmen, my friend.

Convenient, that. I am not too old to invoke him.

And we're not friends.

This thread is upsetting. Sorry, chief. Had you presented your points as a fan instead of a professional writer, I wouldn't be so indignant.

Thanks for making such a great post!  Constructive criticism is received as well as a worthy example of a good ending.   Simply beautiful.

Excellent post, OP. It was this that made me realize that one reason the ending fails to resonate with me is that it is indeed, not an ending. It's as if the narrative stops when Shepard collapses in front of the panel, and a completely different story begins right from that point.

If I'm being unclear, pick up your favorite novel, and remove the last two chapters and replace them with the first two chapters of any other book in your collection. Rather jarring, no?

Great post! If your ending had been what I had got at the end of ME3 I would have been satisfied. I wish bioware had shown some of your common sense.

Bit late to the party but I read all that and agreed with it almost entirely. Having read the *ew* fan-fiction ending you provided, I can safely say that not only does it fall in line with what I expected from the end of the game, it is a hell of a lot better than the ending we got.

Epic first post is epic. Interesting, entertaining, and satisfying until the end.

I would add something, but I don't think there's anything to add. Maybe that I would prefer an actual boss fight with Harbinger and the rest of ME3 to be fixed, but given the starting point of the OP's fan fiction ending, it's definitely one of the best endings that could be written.

Stunning look into the current story and ways of saving it. Personally Bioware should talk to you. The ending didn't live up to expectations but your ending is far more entertaining and tbh fitting with mass effect.

Lets hope that dlc delivers if not the community should finish this game with you writing it

Hey, thanks for the (relatively) new responses. When the extended cut is released, I'll give it an analysis.

Great post. I love your fan-fic ending, I would have been happy with it. I like how you integrated saving/sacrificing the Destiny Accession in ME1, if you could find some way to include saving/destroying Collector Base in ME2 that would make it perfect.

  • No previous cycle had ever been able to unify all of their diverse spacefaring races under one banner against the Reapers in time. (Reinforcement of Javik statement in regards to the Protheans and the theme of unification and cooperation against a universal enemy)

This one is my favourite. This is what makes current cycle and Shepard unique. All cycles had their heroes, but all were defeated. This is the only reason why this cycle have a chance. And if Shepard didn't manage to unite everybody, must come a bad ending. Rachni must be taken into account also.
Thanks for interesting thoughts )

I think people call it deus ex because of Star Jar. He's the introduced godlike resolution that was introduced that inexplicably resolves the conflict. While it's not strictly Deus Ex, it is close enough that I'm okay with people calling it that.

Awesome. Critique was thorough and concise, and got to the fundamental flaw(s) with ME3's ending.

Damn, I wish I had gotten your ending, (although the use of EMS works for me only if BW disconnects SPG from MP.)

Excellent breakdown of the ending and general story arc, the part regarding the reapers being pushed aside and made shallow in favour of the illusive man stood out for me, as for 2 games cerberus was nothing more than a sub plot similar to the turks and shinra corp in FF7, and the reapers were the ultimate threat like sephiroth and the final game would be the conclusion of that. Seems there ego and general lack of there own story got in the way. Great original post though OP. Hope you do the same with the EC
