I think people are fooling themselves if they really think sites like Amazon and Metacritic don't matter. Both of these sites get millions of hits...millions! Do you honestly think negativity of this magnitude has no affect?
It does.
It drives word of mouth, and that...not professional reviews, drives sales more than anything. It can effectively make a game such as the case was with DA:O, or kill a game dead, as it was with DA2.
NO developer wants this kind of bad press. NOT A ONE!
Like a cancer, it has even made it's way into mainstream press...Forbes...and that will have a negative affect on sales. Considering that the voices of dissent, no matter what their sources are, have screamed loud enough and long enough, this has now pushed the story everwhere you see or hear mention of ME3.
The best thing Bioware can do is use the publicity to it's advantage and pull a massive "Broken Steel" to save face. They'd come out on top financially and it would go a long way to sure up an already wavering fanbase.
By the way......the customer IS STILL always right......unless you want to go bankrupt.
Yep this.
Working in sales....I cannot do anything but DISagree. Many customers are definitely NOT right and I HATE having to sweet-talk idiots whose arguments are completely baseless.
Idiots huh?
If you say so.
If people in large enough numbers stop buying your products and you loose the support of once loyal customers who almost always gave you the benefit of the doubt...who is left?
Building up a loyal consumer base willing to stick with you takes years. Destroying that base with hubris can happen much faster, and what company wants that?
You wouldn't have to worry about sweet talking ANYONE! Your notion that customers are idiots without the basis for complaint on a product they purchased, in the end, it would make YOU the idiot....without a business no less.
Yes...the customer is always right after all. If you were the CEO of your company and disagreed, no problem.
How hard would it be to find another company willing to take my money?

ME3 can't recover from the low average score on Amazon. It will take hundreds of great reviews to raise it from 2/5 to 3/5.
We all know a ton of people pre-ordered this game and we all know it took a week for the backlash to gain momentum.
The question is how will sales be in the coming weeks.
Any idea how many copies they need to sell to breakeven?
From the article:
"Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows"
As a customer of Amazon and Bioware products, I go through indv reviews, and tend to skim the ratings. And for myself, all this nonsense goes to show is more of the same entitled whining I have been reading on the forums.

Your article provides rank. We are more interested in actual sales. Latest sales figures are 1.85 million. Again, we all know ME3 was highly anticipated. The sales numbers reflect that. What matters is what happens in the coming weeks.
It doesn't matter how you decide to purchase a game. What matters is how the majority makes their purchasing decisions. A 2/5 score on Amazon is not good. It will affect sales.

Hmm...certainly not publicly.
What matters is money. Sales is everything. Having a built in fanbase to sell your products to...developers work very hard to gain that, if they can. It's not something that is given easily, it's earned.
Bioware earned it's fanbase with consistency. Almost every title, an instant classic or very well received.
Then along came DA2 and the tide began to turn.
My feeling is they handled the aftermath of that situation very poorly because it was something they had never experienced, not to that degree.
At least half of the sales of DA2 were due in large part to the fans who loved DAO so much, they pre-ordered the title based on the Bioware track record. Hey, so did I. How could you go wrong with a Bioware rpg? At that time, it was unthinkable.
The game is released and we all know what followed. Professional reviews were very good for the most part. User reviews told an entirely different story. This for some was the first time they began to question the validity of professional opinions. "How could they possibly overlook the things that were painfully obvious" was largely the sentiment.
The forums were ablaze with dissent, to put it mildly. Some people went way overboard, wishing harm to Bioware employees...which is completely unacceptable in every possible way. Point is that so called "entitled whinning" hurt...a lot. This does not bode well for Bioware when they try to sell us DA3. Preorders will not be what they were for DA2.
Now, I said all of that because DA is one of their flagship titles..which has now been put into question thanks largely to customer dissatisfaction. Also called "entitled whinning" by some. Whatever you choose to call it, IT can be poison to a company and the game they want to sell you.
Now here we are again. Similar situation. Possibly similar consequences.
Although I have yet to play ME3, I could NEVER believe it's anywhere near as unpolished or as unfocused as DA2 turned out to be. Still. 2 in a row that cause your fans to doubt your once unshakeable reputation has to hurt. If left as is, according to what is happening, ME4 or any other title in the series will also be put into jeopardy.
2 titles and a lot of bad press = a loss in sales for future releases.
Is it fair? That's a matter of opinion. Either way, it's happening.
Something to think about. Personally, I really hope Bioware recovers it's name. I have so many great memories from hundreds of hours spent on soo many of their games. It would be a shame to loose that. I hope I get to experience a ME3 that isn't so polarizing and divisive. I hear it's quite the experience until the end kills it all dead.
Okay...my dissertation is finished. Sorry, my "entitled whinning."

Call me a self entitled idiot all you want I rated the game 2 stars and am very proud of the fact. I don't give a frak about the game itself when the ending killed all replayability of 3 games for me. If you disagree feel free to write your own review. If I am in the minority prove it and post your 5 star review. I always read Amazon reviews when I am looking to buy something it has helped me in my selections from DVD series and childrens books to fitness equipment and it has almost always been spot on.

The "most helpful" review for ME3 (Xbox) on Amazon is about 20 paragraphs long and it rates the game 2 out of 5 stars.

No new big releases - check
Advertised to the n'th degree - check.
Will take a week or two to see what effect this has (pardon the pun). Chances of ME3 doing the 6-8 million EA wanted are slim to none though.

Ahh; Yes; the old rating for Ratings trick!
While a fan of the indv reviews and sites, I am hoping that most folks can see past the smoke and mirrors of such 'valid stats', and take a swing at making an informed purchase.
Personally, I also hope this blows up in the faces of those participating in such shenanigans.

Inigo Montoya You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Cannot speak for others, but I dislike to see poor behaviour in the marketplace. As another that has been in sales and the hospitality industry for 25+ yrs, I also tire of such antics. When children misbehave, it is somewhat understandable, as their are kids. When it happens from adults, there is little reason; simply see those that are unreasonable.

How would you rate ME3 if it made you NOT want to play ME1, ME2, or ME3 again? Because lots of people feel that way.
I hope BioWare addresses this mess. I would love to see them rebound from this.
However, I just call it like I see it. And I can tell you a 2/5 score on Amazon will have an adverse effect on sales.

Because of the way you've been reacting? I personally just want to know exactly what is the consenses on what would be a good ending for you guys at this point, because obviously you guys are impossible to satisfy if a ending to a game that you enjoyed up till then warrant's this wild behavior.
I have no problem if you guys want a New ending dlc........just that you pay for it.....and stop acting like brats

Agreed. As a million others have said, the first 98% of ME3 was fantastic. But what if that last 2% was so unenjoyable that you have no desire to open up the franchise again? I don't need to "review bomb" Mass Effect 3 to give it a low rating, at this point.

Now, I work in a very forward facing customer role in a Tourist Attraction and I can sympathise...
With both sides. You do get the idiots who complain about things that're entirely out of your control and only seem to turn out for a moan, many of these situations can be safely ignored, or dealt with in a kind of weary paitence.
You also understand that when multiple people come to you with a complaint and it's the same complaint over and over again it might mean there's an actual issue at hand and there might be a breakdown in a process, or a misunderstanding that is causing these complaints.
What Bioware is currently dealing with is the latter here, not the former. The sheer weight of people complaining about the ending is outweighing those who are telling them they did a good job. The worst part is that it also appears to include fans who, like myself, enjoy the lore but are simply bewildered by the hashed and light feeling ending that appeared at the end of (on a personal level) some 149 hours of my life dedicated to building up this character.
I'll just let this one sink in a bit folks, out there there are many many people who've sunk in the best part of a week of their lives into enjoying these games and are understandably feeling a bit cheated by the rather abrupt ending which gives no clarity and no closure.
Now there's the argument that no matter what ending Bioware came up with there'd be people whining about how much it sucked. This is also perfectly true and will happen no matter what they do. But when the weight is such that over 5% of the current sales on Amazon have joined a facebook group... you just might, just might have something wrong on your hands.
I understand where the writers were coming from but it occured to me within minutes of being on the boards here that if they wanted positive buzz generation and "lots of speculation" they could have not included certain revelations in the end scene (the stupid circular logic bit folks are complaining/yodawg-ing about especially considering how Soverign, Harbinger and "Blinky" talk to you and our ability to comprehend things) which would have happily left all of us speculating away and wondering how, why, when, etc etc. Instead we find ourselves following already established lore and logic and coming to initial terrifying conclusions followed rapidly by "What happened to xxxxxx and why?" to nearly a dozen different questions.
I also get completely they were evidently aiming for the Inception-esque ending in which we're supposed to see the ending and go... "WHAT?" It was unfortunately very badly executed and simply doesn't fit with the rest of the (traditional but brilliant) narrative of the game and the other games of the series. Maybe says something about the lead writers and the need for more people around them to cajole and question the choices they're trying to make.
It's very easy to dress up a lot of the complaints as whining and as this is the internet it's easy to dismiss it, but the sheer weight? The sheer bloody-minded scale of people doing this?
Well, lets look at it this way, all those games I listed above? The ones that span nearly all of Bioware's career since they really became famous and a champion for the true RPG? Aside from NWN I bought them on day one.
I'm not going to do so again.
And I think that's actually tragic.

Finally! I am glad to hear that people are actually letting their feelings on the game be heard. Maybe if they loose enough money they will learn from there mistake.
oh you mean the 'mistake' of writing an ending they are happy with? oh, I missed the part where you worked for Bioware and owned rights to the copyright and had producer level status on the project lol. Amazon ratings will do nothing just like the metacritic, and every other sad form of internet whining
If you honestly think they wrote that ending because they were "happy with it" you sir are a fool. And no you are right I don't work for Bioware or own rights to the copywrite or have producer level status, which doesnt matter, because that has NOTHING to do with my comment. If you are going to troll, do a better job. I have seen good games, games that were taken care of and carried out above normal standards. Such as Mass Effect 1 and 2. don't get butthurt because my opinion differs from yours.
