So I just bought a dragon age origins and I am enjoying the game quite a bit except for one aspect of the game, and that is I don't know how to control my NPC's without micro manageing them which is extreamlly annoying. In more difficult fights I find myself switching between characters and making them drink pots just to stay alive the whole time rather than enjoying the combat spells on my mage. It is litterally so frusterating. Where do i go and what do I do to get my NPC's to drink health/mana pots when they get low? How do I get my NPC's to cast certain spells and not cast others?
If anyone could help me figure this out I would be so very grateful.
Please help me figure out how to control my NPC's :(

Have you used the Tactics menu yet? If not, take a quick look at the manual and read up on them as they're a lifesaver as you progress. The key tactic to start with are to set your characters up to heal when their health is running low, which you can do with a simple entry in the Tactics for each character:
Self -> Health is Use Item -> Lesser Health Poultice
The same can be done if you have a mage who can heal, replacing Self with Ally.
Also, check out this thread for a great explanation:
does that help, or were you looking for something different?
